FIELD STUDIES (http://fsj.field-studies-council.org/) RECORDING AND MONITORING RARER MOTHS IN THE YORKSHIRE DALES TERRY WHITAKER [email protected] Field notes on some of the Yorkshire Dales National Park’s rarer moths, and the activity of the Yorkshire Dales Butterfly and Moth Action Group in increasing our KnoWledge of their distribution and status. RESEARCH SUMMARY Yorkshire Dales Butterfly and Moth Action Group YorKshire Dales Butterfly and Moth Action Group (YDBMAG) started in 2002 as an initiative betWeen Butterfly Conservation, the YorKshire Naturalists’ Union and the YorKshire Dales National ParK Authority (YDNPA). Its aims and objectives are as folloWs: • To advise on habitat action plans affecting Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) Lepidoptera; • To devise species action plans for Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP) Lepidoptera; • To monitor LBAP lepidopteran species. The folloWing initiatives have been promoted: • Increase public aWareness of LBAP species; • Increase KnoWledge of distribution of LBAP butterfly species; • Set up butterfly monitoring transects for LBAP species. These initiatives have included: • Setting up transects for small pearl-bordered fritillary and northern brown argus butterflies; • Surveys to discover the status and distribution in the YorKshire Dales National ParK (YDNP) of small pearl- bordered fritillary butterfly 2002, 2007-8 and 2013 and northern broWn argus butterfly 2002, 2007 and 2013; • Producing reporting postcards for common blue and green hairstreaK butterflies (2005-2007; 2006-2007); • Producing an identification guide to butterflies in the YDNP, With English Nature (WhitaKer, 2004); • Setting up transects in the small pearl-bordered fritillary and northern brown argus butterfly in the YDNP, by 2003. Currently, (2013), there are six UK butterfly monitoring scheme (UKBMS) transects in the YDNP. -

The papers and abstracts that follow in this proceeding were presented at this conference entitled "Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding in the Age of Genomics - Progress and Future". This international conference brought together geneticists, breeders, applied and basic scientists, managers and professional foresters to exchange the latest information on forest genetics and tree breeding, with special focus on potential application of biotechnology and genomics in the future. Given that the topics were important, timely, and pertinent to scientists worldwide, a total of 231 people from 22 countries participated -

In a previous paper (YOSHIDA 1980), seasonal fluctuations of the moth community and the predominant species were compared among the four· stands. As a second report the present paper deals with soml charactelistics on the faunal make-up. Before going further, the author wishes to express his sincere thanks to Mr. Masanori J. TODA and Professor Sh6ichi F. SAKAGAMI, the Institute of Low Tem perature Science, Hokkaido University, for their partinent guidance throughout the present study and critical reading of the manuscript. Ten of them are new to the fauna of Serbia (Ennomos quercaria, Anticollix sparsata, Colostygia fitzi, Eupithecia absinthiata, E. alliaria, E. assimilate, E. millefoliata, E. semigraphata, Perizoma juracolaria and Trichopteryx polycommata); five are here recorded in Serbia for the second time (Dyscia raunaria, Elophos dilucidaria, Eupithecia ochridata, Perizoma bifaciata and Rhodostrophia discopunctata); and two are recorded for the third time (Nebula nebulata and Perizoma hydrata). Information regarding where and when they were all found is given herein. KEY WORDS: geometrid moths, measuring worms, new record, taxonomy Introduction With more than 23000 species, Geometridae is one of the largest families of the order Lepidoptera (Choi et al., 2017). About 900 species have been found to date in Europe (Hausmann, 2001). Some of them are significant pests in agriculture and forestry (Carter, 1984; Barbour, 1988; Glavendekić, 2002; Pernek et al., 2013). Around 380 species have so far been recorded in Serbia (Dodok, 2006; Djurić & Hric, 2013; Beshkov, 2015a, 2015b, 2015c, 2017a, 2017b; Beshkov & Nahirnić, 2017; Nahirnić & Beshkov, 2016). -

Scalercio & S. Greco Abstract In this paper we described the Heterocera fauna of the Calabrian black pine forest in the Sila Massif, southern Italy. We sampled 15 stands at 1270-1446 meters of altitude. One UV-Led light traps per stand was turned on once per month from May to November 2015 and from April to November 2016. We collected 18,827 individuals belonging to 367 species. Thaumetopoea pityocampa (Notodontidae) and Alcis repandata (Geometridae) were the most abundant species. Conifers are the main larval foodplant of 11 species and 4,984 individuals. Particularly interesting was the presence of Eupithecia indigata, discovered in Italy outside the Alps few years ago, abundant in pure Calabrian black pine stands. In this work, we evaluate the taxonomy of the Trichopterygini in Chile based on a phylogenetic analysis of the morphological attributes. In our analysis, we used Tatosoma and Sauris as outgroups. Two approaches were used to evaluate phylogenetic relationships: 1) parsimony criterion, and 2) Bayesian inference. Parsimony analysis was conducted in PAUP software, and Bayesian analysis with Markov chain Monte Carlo using the BayesPhylogenies software. Our results based on the phylogenetic hypothesis suggest a new taxonomic order for Trichopterygini of the Andean Region of Southern South America. Dospělec: rozpětí 26–29 mm; zadní holeně jen s jedním párem ostruh, pysková makadla krátká, nepřečnívající čelo; přední kříd- la šedá s tmavšími (ne hnědými), více nebo méně zřetelnými příčkami a s dvojicemi tmavých okrajových teček; zadní křídla bělavá, s naznače- nými příčkami, u samců s výrazně kratším lalůčkem; → housenka štíhlá, zelená s výrazným běložlutým spirakulárním pruhem; řitní pošinky s krát- kými ostruhovitými výběžky. Rozšíření. Eurosibiřský druh; od Britských ostrovů přes severní a střední Evropu a severní oblasti jižní Evropy na východ až do Střední Asie; v ČR dosti rozšířen v nižších polohách. Bio- nomie. Nížiny až nižší polohy v horách (v Alpách až 1600 m n. m.); mezo- filní 2. až 3. stupně; smíšené a listnaté lesy, paseky, průseky, světliny, lesní okraje, parky, zahrady, křovinné lemy; monovoltinní: letová perioda konec III. až konec V., motýli aktivní v noci, naletují na kvetoucí jehnědy, ve dne se ukrývají ve vegetaci, často také sedí na kmenech stromů; při- létají na světlo i vnadidlo; larvální perioda VI.–VII., hlavní živnou rostlinou housenek je osika, dále i jiné druhů topolů, příležitostně též vrby, bříza a habr, housenky sedí pevně přichyceny na středním žebru na rubu listů; kuklí se v řídkém zámotku v suchém listí nebo ve stelivu na zemi; kukly přezimují.
