    The Magi and the Manger: Imaging Christmas in Ancient Art and Ritual By Felicity Harley-McGowan and Andrew McGowan | Volume 3.1 Fall 2016 The story of the birth of Jesus Christ is familiar, both from the biblical narratives and from iconography that has become ubiquitous in church decoration and widely circulated on Christmas cards: a mother and father adoring their new-born child, an ox and an ass leaning over the child, a star hovering above this scene, angels, shepherds with their sheep in a field, and luxuriously clad “wise” men or kings approaching the child with gifts. All these elements are included by the Venetian artist Jacopo Tintoretto in a painting which started in his workshop in the late 1550s, and for much of its life hung above the altar of a church in Northern Italy (Fig. 1). In addition, Tintoretto imagines other figures at the scene. With Mary and Joseph at the manger, he includes a second pair of human figures, perhaps the parents of the Virgin: Anna and Joachim. The artist also inserts less traditional animals in the foreground: a chicken and a rabbit, and a dog curled at the foot of the manger. Fig. 1. Winter solstice was the turning point, after which, they learned, the precious sun would be reborn and return to its glory. Interestingly, animals might be slaughtered so they didn’t need to be fed and meat was temporarily plentiful for the celebrations. Fermented drinks were ready to be consumed. Evidence of winter solstice celebrations exist in not only Western European culture, like Stonehenge in England, but also Hindu, Persian, and East Asian. There is a primal survival instinct that associates light with life. Celebrations tended to be centered not only around the sun but family, food, fire and a sacred relationship with a greater power. The Roman Empire had Sol Invictus (the Invincible Sun), who was originally a Syrian god but declared chief god under Emperor Aurelian. His celebration was December 25th.

Introduction The star of Bethlehem has been considered either to be mythical or a miraculous object beyond the bounds of scientific explanation or a real astronomical phenomenon.2 The question of whether a celestial phenomenon reported in ancient literature in an historical context was a real astronomical object is one which occurs quite frequently. In all such cases it seems best to consider as a working hypothesis that the report is correct and to investigate whether any astronomical phenomenon exists which fits the report. Thus, tentatively, we take seriously the references in Matthew’s gospel and in other ancient literature to the star of Bethlehem which is stated to have appeared near the time of the birth of Christ. If an astronomical object can be identified with the characteristics described in Matthew and other ancient manuscripts, this information may throw light on the long standing problem of the date of the Nativity. In AD 525 a Roman scholar and monk, Dionysius Exiguus, fixed the AD origin of our present calendar (Anno Domini = in the year of our Lord) so that Jesus was circumcised in the year AD 1 on 1 January (8 days, counting inclusively, after his birth on 25 December the previous year). Talmage main- Itained that Jesus Christ was born on April 6 in the year 1 bc.1 Talmage was apparently the first LDS writer to propose this particular date. Nearly a century has passed since his book appeared, and in that time it has become practically axiomatic among Latter-day Saints that Jesus was born on April 6 of 1 bc. But was he? In the last century, much new information has come to light about the New Testament. New data from archaeological and historical sources, com- bined with a reexamination of the scriptural accounts involved, suggest that the April 6 dating should be reconsidered. This article will demonstrate why I prefer a narrow window of time at the beginning of winter for the birth of the Savior and propose that Jesus was most likely born in December of the year 5 bc. This proposal will probably come as a surprise, and perhaps even as a shock, to some Latter-day Saints. Aware that some readers suppose April 6 must be regarded, without question, as the authoritatively established birth date of Jesus, and thus that they may be inclined to reject this proposition from the outset, I invite readers to review the evidence presented below. A large amount of data is introduced in this study, and at first, some of these items may seem disconnected from others, but I hope to bring them all together in a series of coherent conclusions at the end of the study.

According to a document dat- ing to 354, this was the first celebration by the early Christians of Western Europe – by this time the Catho- lic Church – as the birthday of the New Testament Jesus. Is this date given in the New Testament? No. In fact, the nativity stories of the New Testament clearly have the birth of Jesus taking place in the springtime because this is when the shepherds watched over their flocks by night as it was the lambing season. (Of course, the bigger problem is that of the historicity of Jesus itself and the fact that the Gospel nativity stories make little sense.) The struggling Catholic Church chose the date of December 25th as a way of saying “me too” and in order to compete with the other religions of the time. For this date had long been observed as the birthday of the sun and of many deities connected with the sun. These deities included Horus, Osiris, Attis, Dionysius, Krishna, Zarathustra, Hercules, Mithra, Adonis, Tammuz, Prometheus, and others. And why was the birthday of the sun and of sun-gods observed on December 25th? Because it ap- proximates – as best our ancient ancestors could tell – the winter solstice. This is the point at which, in the northern hemisphere, where all the ancient civilizations were centered, the sun’s progressive retreat to the south was finally halted and reversed.
