Requiem for SATB chorus, organ, and string orchestra KATHRYN SALFELDER Kon Brio (ASCAP) www.kathrynsalfelder.com Instrumentation: SATB Chorus (including solo soprano) Organ String Orchestra (Min. 6-5-4-3-2) Performance Notes: Accidentals remain in effect for the duration of the measure, at the octave in which they occur. They are sometimes rewritten within a measure for clarity. Notes with “x” noteheads have no pitch and should be whispered. Whispers should not sound strained and may not always be audible. The text will not always be decipherable within the instrumental texture; this is the desired effect. Performance time: c. 23' Program Listing: Requiem (2017/2019) Kathryn Salfelder (b.1987) I. Requiem Aeternam II. Kyrie III. Dies Irae IV. Sanctus V. Agnus Dei Program Note: Requiem is infused with both the spirit and music of Johannes Ockeghem (c. 1420-1497). Much like Ockeghem’s Requiem, it is straightforward, perhaps even a bit restrained. I seek to be genuine to my own musical language while also reflecting my deeply-held interest in Renaissance polyphony. The standard Latin Requiem text is set alongside a short excerpt of Guillaume Crétin’s “Déploration sur le trépas de Jean Okeghem” (1497), a French laudatory poem praising the late Ockeghem, here sung exclusively by the solo soprano. Five of Ockeghem’s compositions, each referenced by title in Crétin’s poem, are quoted within my Requiem (one quote in each movement): Requiem, Missa Mi-mi, “Ut heremita solus,” Missa Cuiusvis toni, and Missa Au travail suis. Additionally, one of my favorite fifteenth-century techniques, the mensuration canon, appears in Kyrie I and II, liberated from strictures of dissonance and given new breath and voice. Many have asked, “Who is this Requiem for?” And most are surprised to discover that it is not in memory of a particular person; such thoughts of dedication render me incapable of writing at all, frozen in fear that the music would not be worthy of the life it seeks to honor. Instead, this Requiem is a universal ode of love and remembrance, punctuated with moments of intense grief and sadness for our earthly losses. --- Choirboys no long make Florid counterpoint, but rather note-against-note, sing “Requiem” in a sweet manner, Then tune your singing and pious tones, Without anyone adding or omitting anything, And pray to God that He will receive as His guest, The Treasurer named Ockeghem, So that he may sing in Paradise without end.
