HIT OFTHE WEEK: AIN*T THAT LOVING YOU BABY - Elvis Pres ley (RCA) Reported from all quarters of the South. Seems to be his biggest, so far this year. CORRESPONDENTS PICK: FOUR STRONG WINDS - Bobby Bare (RCA) I overlooked this one. Bob Reich-WEKR thinks it-will do as -well as his earlier hits.It ’s a top five request at WPDQ-Jacksonville. Anyone in a market that accepts the ’grass country’ sound would be wise to hop on it. It’s a fine record. SURPRISE OF THE WEEK: HIGH KEET, SNEAKERS - Jerry Lee Lewis (Smash)Mostly jumping inthe smaller markets, where he has never died. It is a top ite m at WHBQ-Memphis. Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina. His dynamic in-per son appearances throughout Dixie, are always well supported at the record shopsand on the juke boxes by his many fans. HOT ACTION RECORD; JUMP BACK - Rufus Thomas (Stax) Fre d Correy-WRAP feels it will be his biggest hit to date. I hope you’ve been playing it ..... if not, you’ve missed one of the really hot items ina very soft singles market. Tom Col lins-WAPX says it’s one of the hottest sidesin years. SMSCHOICE OF THE WEEK: LITTLE MARIE - Chuck Berry (Chess) I ’m certain thisone will get split play....at first. But, you’ll savea mistake, by playing this side now. I'M A LOSER - Beatles (Capitol) Recorded 10/3 and the label will rush it to you, follow ing its premiere on television IO/7 . A new chapter in Beatlemania begins with this release. Heretofore, their video appearances have high-lighted their established selections. For the present, we can look for a number one hit, from the hottest disc act of the day, but the fever of their fans is somewhat less than it was. Their minds are now occupied with Beatles and other things. At one stage of the game, it was just Beatles. An album will follow in November. Whether or not, with another picture, and talk of a spring tour of America, they can generate the hysterical state of '64 again in '65, remains as a question to be answered. This much can be said.... even the Beatles now look for a more orderly release of their records in this country. And before I forget, this record is one of their best. They continue to turn out grade A material. UNLESS YOU CARE - Terry Black (Tollie) Action for Bob Reich and Dick Reus. OGNI VOLTA - Paul Anka (RCA) Larry Gar-WLBG and Dick Lawrence-WFLA like it. SHE’S NOT THERE - Zombies (Parrot) Miami and Washington. Dick Reus-WDXY says that after several weeks, it's just warming up in Sumter, SC. HERE SHE COMES - Tymes (Parkway) May be worth your attention. Some picks. SHE UNDERSTANDS ME - Johnny Tillotson (MGM) It’s his groove. Frank Jolle is already getting some action on it in Nashville. NEEDLE IN A HAYSTACK - Velvettes (VIP) Hot in Washington. Bears watching. WHEN YOU WALK IN THE ROOM - Searchers (Kapp) If the group means something in your market, you might like to know, as of 10/8, it's the hottest side in England. #2 at WAIR and slips into the WPGC-Washington chart this week. DON’T EVER LEAVE ME - Connie Francis (MGM) Only exposure can tell.. .produced by the people who make the Red Bird and Raindrops' records. She wants a big hit badly and is willing to gamble With a new sound. For her! Connie is one artist who has always shown her gratitude to the disc-jockey. It’s one of the instances in which I feel the people in our industry should be somewhat obligated. LONELY - Bobby Vinton (Epic) Will have greater chart longevity than his last. INTO SOMETHING GOOD - Herman’s Hermits (MGM) Warm, but not yet hot in the South. Savannah, Jacksonville, Sumter and Huntsville is where it’s biggest. THEN YOU CAN TELL ME GOODBYE - Johnny Nash (Argo) I t ’s been out for almost two months, but quality sides take a while. Top tip from Russ Wade and Hamp Swain. Looks like the White On White" of the second half of ’64. EVERYBODY KNOWS - Dave Clark Five (Epic) Somewhat slower than his previous efforts. It’s a hit, but frankly I find it quite weak. Jumps from #35 to 26 at WPGC-Washington. Everybody’s on it at this stage of the game. I HAD A TALK WITH MY MAN - Mi tty Collier (Chess) Really a southern record, but it’s weakest in Dixie. Hits the WKLO survey at #2§. Was #1 at WAOK-Atlanta. I keep telling you.....and with so few real hits today, it’s a shame to see so few stations in the South with it. LITTLE LONELY GIRL - Johnny Mathis (Mercury) Pick at WQXI, WVLD, and WFLA. SHAGGY DOG - Mickey Lane (Swan) Houston, Dallas, Little Rock and now E)urham. BLESS OUR LOVE - Gene Chandler (Constellation) Beginning to move at the R & B stations and should begin to move well with pop exposure. Strong for Russ Wade. WALKING Hi THE RAIN - Ronettes (Philles) How about those Christmas sounds] Well produced side that should get much exposure. Their records usually do. RIGHT OR WRONG - Ronnie Dove (Diamond) With a better start than his last, this could easily become a top item. It’s a new dance. YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN THE WAY HE LOOKED AT ME - Dixie Cups (Red Bird) This will require good concentrated play. There’s a tendency to play a record like this very little be cause, for one thing, it sounds like their other two....and lack of play, often causes lack of results. But, the public has shown a preference for the sound, so if you bend over, or shall we say, ’lay on it*, you’ll, find reasonable success. DEATH OF AN ANGEL - The Kingsmen (Wand) No one is reporting this to me as a top item. Is it? High on the national charts. ALBUM PROGRAMMING WHERE DID OUR LOVE TO - Supremes (Motown) The girls called my attention to "Come See About Me." Every bit as good as "Baby Love" and "Where Did Our Love Go." KEEP ON PUSHING - Impressions (ABC) Burke Johnson-WAOK says "Amen" will be released as a single, before Christmas. Top request for him. MORE OF ROY ORBISON’S GREATEST HITS (Monument) "Borne On The Winds" was a top twenty hit for him earlier this year in England. Never released over here, may merit your attention, until he has a new single. Listen to iti HEY GIRL DON’T BOTHER ME - Tams (ABC) New single will be "Silly Little Girl." WELCOME TO THE PONDEROSA - Lome Greene (RCA) Don’t overlook "Ringo". I t ’s a potential hit. A new album by the Beatles is due sometime in November. It will include: "Baby’s In Black" and "I’m A Lover". And possibly "Kansas City". New album by the Rolling Stones, due shortly, will include: "Around And Around", "If You Need Me", and "Confessin’ The Blues".
