On behalf of the ministers and members of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, I want to welcome you into this beautiful and sacred space. As we begin a new concert season in this great church, I hope you will find yourself returning often to this beautiful Sanctuary to experience the music of the Great Organ and the countless artists who perform here as we worship and express our faith. I also pray that the music you hear will inspire you in your spiritual walk and reassure you of our Lord’s abiding presence with you.

May the Lord bless you and keep you,

12 13 Maurice Duruflé (1902–1986) was a Parisian church musician, a renowned virtuoso organ recitalist and a professor at the Conservatoire. The main influences on him were the music of other French composers, like Fauré, Debussy, Ravel, his own teacher Paul Dukas, and Gregorian chant.

The Requiem, Duruflé’s longest and most substantial work, was composed in 1947 at the end of World War II. Like Fauré, Duruflé chose to break away from the operatic and highly dramatic Requiem settings of the time. He sought to focus hissetting not on visions of hell and damnation, but on images of rest and peace. In each movement, the Gregorian chant melodies of the burial Mass are skillfully assimilated, while at other times revealing itself subtly, as the drama unfolds. While Gregorian chant is in its essence the purest form of music, purged of all human emotion, Duruflé’s sensuous harmonies suffuse every note with feeling. The work has nine movements: Introit, Kyrie, Domine Jesu Christe (Offertory),Sanctus , Pie Jesu, Agnus Dei, Lux aeterna (Communion), Libera me (Responsory), In paradisum (Antiphon).

The Quatre Motets sur des thèmes grégoriens, Op. 10, of 1960 are written for unaccompanied chorus and ideal companion pieces for the Requiem. Each motet is composed around the Gregorian chant melody and the texts for each motet come from unique segments of church liturgy. Ubi caritas was originally the final melody sung at mass on Holy Thursday during the washing of feet. Tota pulchraes is the only motet written for three-part women’s voices. This choice and the soft, sprightly nature of the piece, portrays the purity and innocent nature of Mary. The third motet, Tu es Petrus, is a rousing statement of the Church’s foundation on the rock of Saint Peter. Tantum ergo concludes the motets with the familiar Catholic hymn FROM ASHES TO GLORY most often sung during the benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Duruflé uses 4.26 this mediation as a characteristically introspective means of bringing the combined musical ideas of the motets to a reverent and peaceful close. From Ashes to Glory: A Concert Benefitting the Cathedral of Notre-Dame Sunday, April 26, 7:00 pm, Sanctuary PRUMC Chancel Choir The renowned PRUMC Chancel Choir will offer Maurice Durufle’s Requiem and Quatre Motets. The Requiem is a favorite of the choir, and they are excited to offer the entire work. This performance will be in honor of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, and proceeds will go towards the rebuilding of their organ. $15 general admission. Tickets available at www.prumc.org/events.
