he internal combustion engine has been the dominant power source for cars for over a hundred years, leading to our reliance on cars as the most favoured means of transportation. TWe can use our cars to go any place we like, any time we like. When it’s hot outside, we’d rather get in a comfortable air- conditioned vehicle to drive to the local store than endure a long, sweaty walk. But petrol engines burn fossil fuels and release greenhouse gases, especially CO2, into the atmosphere. Ultimately, these gases contribute to global warming. But what if you could halve your fuel consumption? Not only would you be helping save the environment, you would be going to fill your tank less often, saving time and money. You would be getting a lot more for less.

We took the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead for a spin By Piotr Wnuk

he Phantom Drophead is Rolls-Royce’s convertible version of the excellent Phantom coupe. Unsurprisingly, it gets very T positive reviews from the motoring and lifestyle media all over the world. It has an unrivalled image, fantastic interior, and is an incredibly comfortable way to travel. With the Dawn, a recent, cheaper convertible addition to the “double R’s” family, this coupe still stays on the plinth of ultimate luxury and status symbol. It is not only hugely expensive, but also rare. We definitely felt like spoilt rock stars when we took the Drophead out for a few days. The convertible aspect of the car gives the Drophead a slightly different character to the standard Phantom, making it more of a car to drive yourself, as opposed to a car to be driven in. Simply a perfect vehicle for the chauffeur’s day off. Despite a convertible form, and even with the roof folded away, this car’s sheer size definitely acts like a magnet for jealous glances and selfie-hungry tourists. You better equip yourself with some trendy concealing sunnies, unless you want to have your face published all over social media. As you might expect of a Rolls-Royce, the interior is the last, and definite word in quality and comfort. Just like the Phantom saloon, the quality is the perfect marriage between class-leading British design and impeccable German engineering. The craftsmanship of the wood, leather, and metal elements is outstanding, and exactly what you’d insist on from a car this expensive. And another thing: if something looks like a crystal glass button cover, or perhaps some of the rarest wood grains in the world, then you can be pretty sure it is exactly what it looks like. The personalisation options are endless and easily covered by the potential customer’s limitless credit card. ME CAR 43 Tested: 2016 Audi TT

ME CAR 44 he TT might have been given a “lady’s car” label in the past by motoring press, but, this new model proves that it has enough attitude to attract male customers, too. And what’s potentially even more important, it has the goods to back Tit up. It is always nice to get behind the wheel of the Audi. Why? Because their marketing slogan “Vorsprung durch Technik” (Truth in Engineering, for the non-native German speakers amongst us) is not just a catchline visible on the billboard, but a strongly adhered to focus of the German company. Each year the marque is coming up with new technologies, and slipping into the driver’s seat of the new TT was somewhat special. I had been teased with images of the gorgeous widescreen that now replaces the speedometer, rev counter and everything else in between. My geeky face wore a wide smile when I started the engine for the first time, seeing the display come to life. This is another argument for why this car will now appeal to the male side of the potential customers. There is, however, another exceptionally strong argument in the TT’s favour: the 2016 version comes in a much more muscular shape, with sharp edges marking a curvy hood. This is the third generation, and for me, it was love at first sight. In profile, the TT hasn’t changed much, and it still retains its iconic shape.

The third- generation 2016 Audi TT and TTS models give the sporty coupe and roadster design a nudge closer to true sports-car territory, if, that is, you can forgive the lack of a manual gearbox, and if your judge of a sports car is more aesthetic than rooted in motorsports. To that end, it’s looked to the R8 supercar for design influence, and then inward to the driver, with a more driver-centric, cockpit-like layout for the cabin, a lighter-and-leaner driving experience, and a raft of new tech. In profile, the TT hasn’t changed much; it’s recognisable as the same pert coupe or roadster, but its overhangs have been tucked in a bit more and its corners a little more chiselled—which, depending on the vantage point, can make it appear either a bit wider than before (it’s actually narrower) or higher-shouldered (also not the case). There’s definitely some R8 influence in front, where stunning LED matrix headlamps, the trapezoidal “single frame” grille, and new hood creasing are altogether more menacing. The exterior, with its long hood and stubby rear end, is even more distinctive than before, thanks to its larger grill and integrated front spoiler. ME CAR 49 Tested: Volvo V60 Polestar

ME CAR 50 olvo has been winning safety rankings for years. I can only imagine rows and rows of framed certificates decorating its Gothenburg headquarter walls. Each car is packed with enough assistance and safety features to keep all occupants Vsafe, in as many situations as possible, and the “green” approach is set to satisfy tough Swedish emission restrictions. It’s no wonder Volvo vehicles quickly became one of the favourite marques amongst the army of European housewives in the Middle East. With this in mind, I must admit, I was left perplexed when the Swedish manufacturer teamed up with another Scandinavian company, Polestar –a name very well-known to all motorsport fans. It begged the question: “How can you marry one of the world’s safest cars to motorsport technologies?” However, after driving the V60 Polestar edition, I now see the Volvo as an enabler, rather than restrictor. There has never been a more powerful production car than this one from the Gothenburg stable. There has already been an S60 Polestar, and a few other new Polestar Volvos will soon follow. It’s what the series of bespoilered Volvo concepts, you might have noticed at motor shows these past few years, has been all about. Not that Polestar Volvos are solely about spoilers. In the V60’s case, Polestar started with a 3.0-litre T6 R-Design model, and then went to town as much as possible without needing to tear up the undemanding servicing and maintenance routine. The straight six engine gets a new twin turbocharger from Borg- Warner, a new intercooler, a new stainless steel active exhaust system and new Electronic Control Unit (ECU) settings. The six-speed automatic transmission and Haldex electro-hydraulic four-wheel drive system have more aggressive control settings, too, which results in 345 hp, a whopping 500 Nm of torque, and a launch control-governed 0-100 km/h sprint of five seconds. That small difference may not strike you as much, but the spring rates were increased by a whopping 80 per cent, with the stiffer pair on the rear axle, as tends to be the case in performance cars where the need for clean directional response gets the nod over outright ride comfort.

Catering to a need for industry, and new-age pickup drivers, Ford Ranger resembles the skills and style of a baby F-150, according to Ian McGuinness.

rying to convince someone a pickup can be a vehicle that’s more a statement of flair, rather than a lifestyle necessity, used to T be a hard sell. But then the likes of GMC’s Sierra, Chevrolet’s Silverado, and Ford’s F-150 stepped outside their pigeon holes and offered something that’s so much more than a utility vehicle for a construction site. Granted, it was picked up by a handful of yuppies hoping to look more manly – especially in the Middle East – but what people need the double cab with extended bed for now, is quite different to its origins. They want to take their dual sport motorcycle without a trailer; their kayak without a roof rack; their kids without compromising space to fit in all the equipment needed for a camping trip. So large pickups have managed to change their stripes. Could a cape vineyard tour, African safari, and off-roading adventure do the same for the smaller pickups? Or are we to forever look upon the likes of Mitsubishi’s L200 and Nissan’s Navarra as nothing more than work horses? Ford doesn’t think so, and is offering a kind of “baby F-150” in the shape of its new Ranger. Brighter in colour, more powerful in torque terms, and a fantastic step into the marque’s ownership club of new-age pickup drivers. Hedonistic art on the wat e r

Hedonist embodies the very soul of Art of Kinetik. It is an ultimate blend of comfort, looks and performance. This 63-foot yacht has a solid mahogany hull and Rolls-Royce water jets shooting it off with a maximum speed of 40 knots. The craftsmanship is outstanding: you will never see a screw or any plastic parts – it’s the pure art of making boats. Every component of the boat fuses together function and form. The best example is the mast, which is nothing but the sculptor’s work. The navigation system combines four cameras, including one for night vision, an advanced guidance system, weather stations, radar, satellite compass and a suite of communications. The pilot’s chair is unique as well. It took nine months to design and test it. It is an ergonomic masterpiece capable of moving in all directions, fully adjustable with the touch of just one single switch. The interior, which features slate and American walnut, has been designed by the world famous interior designer Alv Kintscher, and it’s so unique that it guarantees you have never seen a boat interior quite like this one.

Panama from Ecuador?

A well-made Panama hat is an exquisite creation and showcase of craftsmanship. Created from fine, closely woven straw, it is soft, cool and breathable, yet structured enough to hold an elegant shape. What is the secret of good Panama and how to recognise it? It all comes down to the fineness of the straws, which are hewn from the dried and bleached leaves of the Carludovica palmata plant. The weavers in Ecuador (not Panama as the name suggests) who make the hats keep the fingernail of one thumb long and sharp. This they use to slit the leaf into as many strips as they can. The thinner the strips, the finer the hat. Some of the finest hats with 33 rows of weave can retail for ten times more than one with 20. The finest examples are incredibly rare, and made by only one or two master weavers in the Ecuadorian village of Montecristi, and they can sell for up to AED 110,000. For a basic, everyday Panama, there’s no need to be that detailed. Anything with more than 18 rows will make a great hat. But it’s worth checking whether it is hand-woven or not. Among the best stockists of Panama hats is Lock & Co with its Rollable Superfino Montecristi for AED 5,350. The very top end of the market, however, is dominated by online specialists, such as Brent Black, where you can create a bespoke hat from around AED 6,100. If you do not have such a big budget then head down to www.hatsandcaps.co.uk where you can get a simple Harry Stingy Brim hat for as little as AED 230. The price increases with quality. Sevilla hat made of toquilla straw with grosgrain will cost you AED 300. It is also worth looking into high-street stores where you can buy one from AED 50 in the summer season.

All important additions

The weather is finally cooling down, and it makes us want to spend as much time outdoors as possible. All rooftop and beach bars will fill up with trendy people again. You may probably visit some of them yourself, before the temperature rises again next year. Stand out from the crowd by following some of our top tips from recent fashion trends. A great way to do so is to shine with the right accessories. We have picked a few interesting bracelets that are a perfect way to complement your look. Our advice is to keep it simple: a linen shirt, lightweight cotton or chino shorts, and boat shoes, will work for most occasions. Relaxed, yet sophisticated looks will fit perfectly at beach bars while sipping mocktails by the sea. This look might sound really simple but you can easily brighten it up. Try investing in a couple of pieces of jewellery to add your own style. Lightweight, perfectly portable, and available at prices across the spectrum, jewellery offers an easy way to amp up your cooler-weather attire. Bracelets and cuffs are perfect for adding personality and character to your look when wearing lightweight tees and vests. A well-placed leather bracelet will bring a little understated texture to your outfit, and can (depending on the style in question) appear ruggedly casual or surprisingly smart. Try teaming a jet black or rich dark brown design with a short-sleeved shirt, some tailored shorts and a pair of leather loafers for a refined yet laid-back aesthetic. The ideal fit would be one of the iconic Botega Veneta bracelets, Tom Ford’s leather cuff or Tateossian leather cobra style. If your style is more surf’s up than buttoned up, consider a colourful beaded or textile bracelet from brands such as Simon Carter, Ted Baker, Paul Smith or Miansai. These work well layered up on one, or both, of your wrists and can be combined with casual beach wear, as well as relaxed unstructured cotton and Peoples linen short suits. shades
