Corporate Profile 2020 2021 Message from the CEO Corporate Profile 2020 2021 Message from the CEO 01 Corporate Profile From a Company Making Things, to a Company Making People Smile More than just a company that makes cars, aircraft, and related technologies, Subaru aims to be a company that makes our customers smile. In every era, our goal is to be a trusted partner for our customers and engage sincerely with them through attractive and distinctive products and services that deliver Enjoyment and Peace of Mind. In this once-in-a-century period of profound transformation, the automobile in- dustry is required to respond to the new domains of CASE (connected, autono- mous, shared & services, and electric) not conventionally associated with car-making. At the same time, the global pandemic of COVID-19 is changing the way we live through its impact on every aspect of our daily lives. Subaru is by no means a large player in the automobile industry, and it would be difficult for us to develop everything we need on our own. Our business model aims to differentiate Subaru from our competitors by selecting and con- centrating on areas where we can enhance our strengths and distinctive fea- tures, and focusing our limited resources on such fields in pursuit of the added value that our customers seek. In other areas, we respond appropriately and ef- ficiently by collaborating with Toyota Motor Corporation and a range of other business partners. Specifically, based on our mid-term management vision for 2025, “STEP,” we are placing both our automotive and aerospace businesses on a strong footing for steady, sustainable growth by further accelerating our efforts to address three key themes: corporate culture reforms, quality enhancement, and the “Subaru-zukuri” (make-a-Subaru) initiative. Guided by our corporate philosophy of aiming to be a compelling company with a strong market presence built upon the customer-first principle, we will continue our day-to-day efforts to contribute to meeting diversifying societal needs, fulfill our corporate social responsibilities, and make Subaru a company that is trusted by and resonates with our customers around the world. I very much appreciate your continued support. However, it seems that ‘Decided by Germany’ is becoming a painful reality for some UK franchised dealers. BMW has received a public thrashing during an inquest into a fatal car crash in the early hours of Christmas Day, 2016. Woking Coroner’s Court heard that the crash occurred after Narayan Gurung, a former Gurkha in his 60s, swerved to avoid an unlit BMW, which had broken down on a major road. T It emerged at the inquest that BMW had known about an electrical fault that caused some cars to stall and lose their lights since 2011. It had recalled vehicles in some other countries, but not in the UK. Shamefully, it did not recall them until after Gurung’s death. Even then, it recalled 36,410 cars, fewer than 10% of the number the DVSA asked for. BMW UK was unable to explain the delay at the inquest, except to say that recall “decisions are made in Germany” and the fault was not considered “critical”.

2005 SUBARU OUTBACK Beware the beaten path. It is the path of followers, not leaders. Of tourists, not explorers. It is the road traveled by those more trusting of convention than invention. And it is not the path of Subaru. Because for over three decades we have blazed our own trail, building the kind of cars people depend on every day. Capable cars. Rational cars. Intelligent cars. THE UNION OF POWER, INNOVATION AND PRACTICALITY. We introduced America to the beauty of All-Wheel Drive. We proved ourselves on rally courses around the world, but our journey never truly ends, it merely evolves. As do we, with cars that offer more than mere capability. Much more. They are stylish. Powerful. Exhilarating. They ignite passion. In this way, we constantly push the boundaries. Continually redefining what a Subaru can be. Is it rational to become emotionally attached to a car? Or is it only natural? For example, consider the adventurous all-new 2005 Subaru Outback. Redesigned, reengineered and reinvigorated to deliver world-class levels of performance and capability, it is far more than a smarter alternative to the SUV. It is a driving experience that inspires passion. AND PASSION. THE 2005 OUTBACK Devotion. Elation. And a sense of freedom all its own. All Outback models feature our innovative horizontally opposed Subaru Boxer engine with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive for unsurpassed power, safety and handling. A host of thoughtful amenities. And that legendary go-anywhere, do-anything spirit that could only come from Subaru.
