She remains active on the OFSAA Constitutional Review Board to this day. She joined the NOSSA Regional Board in 1977 and continues to chair the association’s annual meeting almost forty years later. She served four terms as President of NOSSA - 1979,’81,’85,’97 . Her exemplary executive work also included twenty four years on the local NDA Board, a dozen years on the Executive and five terms as President - 1979,’80,’85,’91,’97. For her superlative work with these groups she was awarded the Pete Beach (OFSAA) Award in 1994 and the Special Achievement Award (now the Syl Apps) in 1998. She has also given freely of her time and expertise to various non school groups and enterprises including the North Bay Field Study group and the Multi-Use Recreational Facility Committee. She organized volunteers for the Olympic Torch Relay in 2009 and played roles in both the World Championships and the recent Ontario Special Olympics. For virtually four decades Heather Chambers has played an important role as a builder of sport locally, regionally and provincially.

Tom Cook a native of Toronto, came to North Bay to teach at Widdifield in 1975 and since that time has been an outstanding coach, executive member and community organizer. As a Builder of sport he is best known for his better than 35 years involvement in nordic skiing but he also spent 16 years helping coach junior and senior football, another eight with cross country running and a couple of seasons with alpine skiing. He coached the Wildcat boys and girls nordic ski team from 1977 through 1998 as Widdifield won 65 gold medals - 27 individual and 38 team - at NDA, NOSSA and OFSAA. At the Provincial (OFSAA) level Courtney Crawford and Jodi Thompson won individual golds while Wildcat teams captured three silver and two bronze medals. During those 22 years Cook’s charges brought home 12 NOSSA team awards and 7 individual NOSSA golds ( 3 boys, 4 girls) as well as 26 NDA team championships and 18 individual golds (10 boys, 8 girls). Aside from coaching Cook has served cross country skiing in many disparate ways ; he convened the Canadian Masters in 1992 and 2000, played major roles in OFSAA Nordic Championships here in 1996, 1997, 2007 and 2008, handled numerous NDA and NOSSA Championships and was involved in an Ontario Masters & Nordic Special Olympics & the 2015 Ontario Special Olympics. He has been a tireless worker for the Nordic Ski Club and his input in all aspects of the operation has helped make the more than 40K local nordic trails among the best in the province. His involvement in race preparation, trail construction and maintenance, building construction and general fundraising has been invaluable to the club and to the sport itself. On the executive side of the ledger he held the posts as President of NDA and NOSSA and was President of the Nordic Ski Club from 1989-’92 as well as serving the club as Jackrabbit coordinator, trails, race, membership and fundraising director at various times. Cook has also been involved with many other groups including the North Bay Rotary Club, the Kinsmen, Kiwanis Triathlon, Granite Tennis Club, Patrick For Life, the Dragon Boat Festival and Pickleball. Tom Cook is an exemplary sport builder and citizen.

Marcus Popp is a North Bay native who, before discovering pole vaulting in grade 11, was a multi sport athlete competing in gymnastics, soccer, hockey, skiing and track and field. A student at Widdifield, he learned pole vault basics from veteran coach Brian Risk at Chippewa and later continued a decade of schooling under internationally known coaches at York University’s facility. During his career Popp won four silver medals and a bronze at Canadian Championships, represented Canada at four International Games and competed at the national level for twenty years. An injury kept him from competing at OFSAA in 1992, his final year at high school, but later that year he won a silver medal at the Canadian Junior Championships in Winnipeg (PB 4.65) and earned a spot on the National Junior Track & Field team. Attending Humber College, he began training at York and in 1997 won a silver at Senior Canadians (4.9) which qualified him for the Canadian team. Representing Canada at the Francophone Games in Madagascar he finished 5th and cleared the 5 metre barrier for the first time. In 1998, after a fine indoor season, he was named the top pole vaulter in Canada after recording his all time personal best (5.35) at the York meet. Later that year he finished 6th in the Commonwealth Games at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (5.05). In 2001 he achieved bronze at Canadians and finished 7th in the Francophone Games in Ottawa. Popp won two more silvers at Canadians with a 5.05 in 2002 and 5.00 in 2003 when he turned thirty years of age; he also chalked up a 5th in 1999 with a 5.05. As recently as 2013, competing at the Masters level at the age of forty, he vaulted 4.8 at Canadians - the 8th best height recorded by a Canadian that year. He is still ranked among the top ten pole vaulters in Canada. Over his two decades of competing at the national level Popp was often listed as “unattached” as pole vaulting in is well down the list when it comes to facilities and support. That didn’t stop Marcus Popp from becoming one of the top vaulters in this country.

Curt Rush was born in Wawa and arrived in North Bay at the age of 11. Attending Chippewa Secondary School he became a superior multi sport athlete starting in grade 9 whenhe won the Junior NDA cross country running title and took 3rd at NOSSA. He led the Scarlet Raiders to the NDA Senior Basketball crown in his final high school year but football proved to be his sport of excellence as his sure hands helped Chippewa win consecutive NDA Senior Championships and the Nugget Shield in 1970 and 1971. He caught three touchdown passes and added a two point convert in the ’71 final which saw Chippewa edge Scollard Golden Bears 27-25. He also played parts of two seasons with the North Bay Ti Cats of the Northern Football Conference averaging almost 22 yards per catch while amassing 693 yards and five touchdowns on 30 pass receptions. Attending Western University in 1973 he became a regular with the storied Mustangs in ’74, leading the Ontario University Association (OUA) with 28 catches and 518 yards (18.5 ypc). One of his td catches was good for 96 yards, an OUA record that stood for a number of years. Named an OUA All Star at wide receiver, he helped the purple and white win the 1974 Vanier Cup and was grabbed by Edmonton in the 3rd round of the CFL Draft that year. He had an excellent camp but the Eskimos decided to stick with their veterans so Rush returned to North Bay and suited up with the Ti Cats to play summer ball. Unfortunately he suffered a torn knee ligament which didn’t stop him returning to the Mustangs in the fall of 1975. Despite the knee problems he again led the OUA in pass receptions. After the season he had the necessary knee operation, and although receiving CFL offers, decided to embark on his journalism career. He took a sports writing job with the Sarnia Observer and put in stints with the Edmonton Journal and the Toronto Sun before joining the Toronto Star where he has been a writer and editor since 1981. North Bay Sports Hall Of Fame Dear Friends Welcome to the 35th Annual Induction and Awards Dinner. We are very pleased to announce that the Hall of Fame now occupies the North Concourse of the renovated Memorial Gardents. The layout and space gives us an excellent showcase for our inductees and our photo cabinets in an area that is much more accessible to the public. This year we anticipate having our showcases built and on display with a potential grand opening in the fall of 2015. Our executive has worked very hard and with the continued support of the City of North Bay we are very proud of what has been accomplished to date. Thank you for your support and for attending this evening which celebrates the best in North Bay Sports and North Bay Sporting History. A big thanks to our sponsors who continue to support the Dinner and the endeavours of the North Bay Sporting Community.
