  • Puccini's Gianni Schicchi
Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi - A survey by Ralph Moore Having already surveyed the first two operas in Puccini’s triptych Il trittico, I conclude with the last instalment, Gianni Schicchi. There are nearly fifty recordings if live recordings are counted but despite the claim on the Wikipedia that it “has been widely recorded”, it enjoys no more studio recordings than its two companion pieces. I survey below eleven, consisting of all nine studio accounts plus two mono radio broadcasts all in Italian; I am not considering any live recordings or those in German, as the average listener will want to hear the original text in good sound. The plot may be based on a cautionary tale from Dante’s Inferno about Schicchi’s damnation for testamentary falsification but its comic treatment by librettist Giovacchino Forzano, in the commedia dell'arte tradition, makes it a suitably cheery conclusion to a highly diverse operatic evening consisting of a sequence which begins with a gloomy, violent melodrama, moves on to a heart-rending tear-jerker and ends with this high farce. It is still genuinely funny and doubtless the advent of surtitles has enhanced its accessibility to non-Italian audiences, just as non-Italian speakers need a libretto to appreciate it fully when listening. This was Puccini’s only comic opera and satirises the timeless theme of the feigned grief and greed of potential heirs. The starring role is that of the resourceful arch-schemer and cunning impostor Gianni Schicchi but the contributions of both the soprano and tenor, although comparatively small, are important, as each has a famous, set piece aria, and for that reason neither part can be under-cast.

P.O. Box 197 • Alto, NM 88312 • USA www.trnmusic.com Two Nights at the Opera PROGRAM NOTES Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) was born in Lucca, Toscana, Italy to a family that consisted of a long line of composers. When Puccini was a young boy his father died, leaving his mother and seven children in poverty. Puccini sang and learned to play the organ. At 18 he wrote his first composition, and later entered the music conservatory in Milan. Puccini had a tough start as a composer, but with much hard work he became successful and did well financially. Puccini wrote ten operas, including Il Trittico which was actually three one-act operas. While working on the opera Turendot, Puccini developed a sore throat, which was later diagnosed as cancer. He was operated on, but died five days later of heart failure. Gianni Schicchi is the name of a one-act opera first performed in New York in late 1918. It is actually one of three one-act operas (Trittico) performed during the same evening. The opera is set in the year 1299. A wealthy aristocrat of Florence (Italy) has just died, and his greedy relatives are gathered at the bedside pretending to grieve. But their real interest is in what they will inherit.

  • Opera; the Good, the Bad & the Silly
Kansas City is celebrated as an outstanding town for choral music, and the Metropolitan Chorale is thrilled to be a part of this extraordinary tradition. This evening, I welcome back our committed followers and offer a warm greeting to our newest listeners as we begin our 2008-09 season; know that we appreciate our audience! The Chorale is a unique mixture of student and seasoned singers that takes advantage of the delicate balance between individual contribution and group uniformity inherent to choral singing. This ensemble continues to evolve by growing in number and in competence; we have worked hard this year to “stretch” by perfecting more complicated repertoire, giving singers the opportunity to truly reach their potential. We invite you to keep up with us through April 2009 as we continue our commitment to exceptional choral singing! Sarah Tyrrell—Artistic Director Hello everyone, welcome to our concert tonight! We're all very glad you're here this evening, and are excited for you to hear what we've been working on for the past three months. I am honored to accept the position of the new Associate Conductor. It is an absolute joy to work with Rebecca Johnson and a wonderful chorale that sings great choral music with such joy, deep appreciation and steadfast commitment. I hope that you too find joy listening to us, appreciation learning from us and love meeting us." Taylor Quinn—Associate Conductor Welcome to the 2008-2009 season opener for the Metropolitan Chorale of Kansas City. Tonight’s program is unique and has been great fun for each of us to prepare for.

  • O Mio Babbino Caro Hintergründe Von S
Callas sang only three Butterflys in the theatre, and 24 Turandots; Tosca figured more prominently, at 51 performances between 1942 and 1965. But, she recorded Butterfly , Bohème , Manon Lescaut , Turandot and two Tosca s. What’s more, her only videotaped stage performances are Act II of Tosca , from Paris (1958) and London (1964), and an abridged version for American television (1956). For its American release, this extraordinary LP of Puccini arias was aptly named Puccini Heroines , as it is indeed a collection of portraits of many of the composer’s powerful creations for soprano. By September 1954, Callas had reinvented herself as a slim, elegant diva; the weight loss brought a new slenderness to the voice as well, while the instrument retained flexibility and plushness.

  • Giacomo Puccini's Gianni Schicchi BACKGROUND
Giacomo Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi BACKGROUND There is some debate over whether Giacomo Puccini or librettist Giovacchino Forzano had the idea of basing an opera on the brief passage of Dante’s Inferno describing the wily rogue who cheated the poet’s own relatives out of a considerable fortune. Forzano completed the libretto in June 1917, and Puccini began working on it immediately before setting it aside to finish Suor Angelica , which would become the second part of Il trittico. Il trittico , the trio of short operas encompassing Il tabarro, Suor Angelica, and Gianni Schicchi , premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in 1918 to mixed reviews, with Gianni Schicchi the most well-received. Though usually present at all his premieres, Puccini did not attend. (The lingering presence of mines made the transatlantic journey dangerous so soon after the conclusion of World War I.) Thus, the Met’s General Manager Giulio Gatti-Casazza sent him a telegram following the performance: “Most happy to announce the complete authentic success of the Trittico . At the end of each opera long very sincere demonstrations more than forty warm curtain calls altogether. In spite of public notice forbidding encores by insistence Lauretta’s aria [“O mio babbino caro”] was repeated. Principal strength Moranzoni magnificent. Farrar Muzio Easton De Luca Montesanto Didur incomparable singers and actors. Daily press confirms success expressing itself very favourably on worth of the operas enthusiastically for Schicchi .” Though Il trittico was performed in its entirety a few times, Suor Angelica and Il tabarro gradually faded into the background, while the more popular Gianni Schicchi , with memorable arias like “O mio babbino caro,” was billed with short operas by other composers, such as Cavalleria Rusticana or Pagliacci.

  • LA OPERA X IMMERSIVE VIDEO INSTALLATION Performance + Q&A April 19, 2018 UCLA Royce Hall Rehearsal Room
LA OPERA X IMMERSIVE VIDEO INSTALLATION Performance + Q&A April 19, 2018 UCLA Royce Hall Rehearsal Room Opera: an extended dramatic composition, in which all parts are sung to instrumental accompaniment that usually includes arias, choruses, and recitatives, and that sometimes includes ballet. ABOUT TODAY’S PERFORMANCE: Today ’s performance features immersive video art installation. This installation is intended to shift the typical performance layout in opera. Beginning in the Renaissance, scenographers have attempted to create the allusion of 3D space on the shallow space of the stage. This started with drawing scenography onto flat canvases. Later, these canvases were broken into pieces, to create windows and spaces within the flat image of the stage frame. The video art installation for this performance is reminiscent of scenography history in opera and theater. The video art uses perspective and dimensionality on three 2D screens to warp the space of the Royce Rehearsal room. These visuals will continue to explore the way in which a two -dimensional surface can give rise to three-dimensional space, while also placing opera in an immersive, contemporary setting. PROGRAM NOTES Libiamo ne' lieti calici Quando m'en vo Sempre Libera Nessun dorma La donna è mobile O mio babbino caro Habanera O soave Fanciulla E lucevan le stele OPERA TERMS TO KNOW ARIA: literally “air” in Italian. A song for solo voice usually with instrumental accompaniment LIBRETTO: the “little book” that contains all the words and stage directions for an opera PORTAMENTO: an Italian term for the vocal technique of sliding from one pitch to another continuously, as opposed to jumping between the two.
