Roundcube Web Client Now Available for Kolab Submitted By: Kolab Systems AG Thursday, 8 December 2011 Roundcube Web Client now available for Kolab Submitted by: Kolab Systems AG Thursday, 8 December 2011 After several months of intensive development and testing, Kolab Systems is proud to announce the general availability of its new web client for the Kolab Groupware Solution on Univention Corporate Server (UCS) 2.4 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5 and 6. Interested parties are invited to inquire about our winter sale, ending 1st February 2012. The Kolab Groupware Solution has a groundbreaking design that allows for super-modular setups with individually scaling components that can be swapped out against each other as required. This is the basis not just for setups that allow flexible scaling of components for high-availability, load-balancing and site-reliability, it also allows individual components to be exchanged. In this case that meant providing a new web client based on the star of Open Source web mailers: Roundcube. Roundcube has a modern, lean and extremely usable yet powerful interface that has made it the web mailer of choice for a great number of people and organizations around the world. Building upon the work of the community and together with the core Roundcube developers, Kolab Systems has now finished the integration of a new web front end for email, address book and calendar as well as configuration of mobile phone synchronization on top of the Kolab Groupware Server. For us it is very satisfying to see Roundcube gaining more professional users,” says Thomas Brüderli, Roundcube Architect at Kolab Systems and Roundcube's project initiator. “Helping Roundcube adapt to this kind of setup was a fascinating endeavor and it has given the Roundcube community another major release with lots of improvements on performance and scalability as well as new features. The upstream policy of Kolab Systems has really helped us move the project forward independently of company interests.” The Kolab Systems packaging and quality assurance for our customers has now made the Kolab Server available with the new web front end on the Univention Corporate Server (UCS) 2.4 as well as Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) Versions 5 and 6. Other distributions may be available on request.

The goal of this study is to analyze current CWEs and whether they and their future trends are suitable for large- scale multinational organizations. To this end, we have analyzed the structure of large-scale organizations in general, and of ESA in particular, with respect to organization, geographical distribution, and IT environments. Requirements for CWEs used in collaborative work are presented. Based on an initial list of criteria given by ESA, we have revised and extended the list to introduce a comprehensive set of criteria for evaluating CWEs. The state-of-the- art CWEs are discussed and classified. We have selected 15 representative CWE products and evaluated and compared them in detail. From the evaluation and comparison of CWE products, we have presented our findings of current issues and future trends of CWEs. In particular, existing products provide many features required by large-scale and multinational organizations but those features are not well-integrated into a single system. Due to the complexity of collaborative work within those organizations, often many CWEs are used in parallel and it is not easy to integrate those CWEs together. The work described in this report was done under ESA Contract.

  • Open Source Alternatives to Windows on Servers
OPEN SOURCE ALTERNATIVES TO WINDOWS ON SERVERS There are several good reasons to consider running a server with Free and Open Source Software. It's frequently significantly less expensive than Windows, the software tends to be more secure and robust, there are more options for support, keeping track of software licences is easier and many people feel there are strong ethical reasons too. What is Free and Open Source Software The term “free software” means free as in freedom, not cost (software rarely costs nothing once you've taken implementation and support into account). The freedoms you get from free and open source software include: Installing the software on as many computers as you like Giving (or selling) the software to other people or organisations The freedom to make changes to the “source code” yourself (or get a friendly programmer to do it for you). This gives users the ability to add features and fix bugs without going back, cap in hand, to the vendor. As a user of Free and Open Source Software, you have the opportunity, should you wish, to play an active role in the communities around the products you use: helping others, submitting bugs and influencing development. Being a member of a community in this way is quite different to the traditional passive consumer of proprietary software. Cost savings and where your money goes We are used to the idea of buying locally-produced food, in part to keep money in the local economy. The same issue exists around software. When you buy software from a company such as Microsoft, most of your money leaves the country.
