Weekly Notes 072817
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31). -

The author offers explana- tions why the 2002 labor agreement is not efficiently structured to achieve its professed goals and argues that the perceived tensions that afflicted the industry in 2002 are not likely to disappear by 2007, when more substantive changes will need to be made in order to avoid another confrontation between labor and management. Keywords: major league baseball; labor relations; collective bargaining agreement; revenue sharing; competitive balance; luxury tax Mention baseball labor relations to the typical fan and, as sure as Barry Bonds will be walked with a runner on second and two outs, the reaction will be disgust. Some say it is unseemly, if not immoral, for millionaires to fight billionaires in a world riddled with hunger and homelessness. -
Can Congress Squeeze the Juice out of Professional Sports
Can Congress Squeeze the "Juice" Out of Professional Sports? The Constitutionality of Congressional Intervention into Professional Sports' Steroid Controversy TIFFANY D. LIPSCOMB* I. INTRODUCTION In June of 2003, a Pandora's Box of controversy was opened which has yet to be closed.' The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency received a package from an anonymous track and field coach containing a used syringe. 2 After testing, the syringe was found to contain a hybrid steroid cocktail that was previously not detectable by drug-testing procedures.3 The anonymous coach claimed the steroid 4 was being supplied to athletes by Victor Conte, president of the Bay Area Laboratory Cooperative ("BALCO"). 5 This information prompted an investigation into BALCO by the Department of Justice and the Internal Revenue Service, 6 which, coupled with the release of former professional baseball player Jose Conseco's book Juiced,7 exposed several high-profile * Note & Comment Editor, Ohio State Law Journal;J.D., The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, expected 2008. Much thanks to all my friends who volunteered (or who were forced) to endlessly read over the many drafts of this Note; especially Keila, who was the only person to read an entire draft. Also, thanks to my parents for teaching me I could do anything I put my mind to, including getting a sports article published as a law review article. Lastly, I would like to thank Rob for giving me plenty of reasons not to work on this Note and thus allowing me to keep my sanity. Front Office
FRONT OFFICE The A’s added Jason Giambi (left) and Matt Holliday (right) to bolster their offense for the 2009 season. COOPERSTOWN AWAITS ‘BASEBALL’S GREATEST LEADOFF HITTER’ FRONT OFFICE HENDERSON TO BECOME 15TH ATHLETIC INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAME JULY 26 The greatest leadoff hitter in baseball history has a date with Cooperstown this year. On Sunday, July 26, Rickey Henderson—the pride of Oakland, Calif. and his hometown team, the Oakland Athletics—will stride to the podium in upstate New York and join the game’s immortals. And while fans and media are sure to join in the discussion, there should be no debate: Rickey was, indeed, the greatest leadoff man the sport has ever known. Better than Cobb. Better than Rose. Better than Brock. Better 2009 ATHLETICS than Wills. Henderson, who was born in the shadow of the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum and graduated from Oakland Tech High School, played 25 Major League seasons, including four stints with the A’s that spanned 14 years (1979-84, 1989-93, 1994-95, 1998). And during that quarter century of baseball, the mercurial outfielder posted unprecedented offensive numbers. He set Major League career records for runs scored (2,295), stolen bases (1,406) and walks (2,190, later eclipsed by Barry Bonds), and banged out 3,055 hits, 297 home runs and 1,115 RBI, with a .401 on-base percentage. He REVIEW also hit 81 home runs leading off a game, still a Major League mark. Some of his most shining moments came in an Oakland uniform. In 1982, he shattered the single-season record by stealing 130 bases. -

Baumer and Zimablist Sabermetric Revolution
The Sabermetric Revolution Benjamin Baumer, Andrew Zimbalist Published by University of Pennsylvania Press Benjamin Baumer. and Andrew Zimbalist. The Sabermetric Revolution: Assessing the Growth of Analytics in Baseball. Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2013. Project MUSE. Web. 21 Aug. 2015.http://muse.jhu.edu/. For additional information about this book http://muse.jhu.edu/books/9780812209129 Access provided by University of Michigan @ Ann Arbor (4 Dec 2015 21:10 GMT) PREFACE ichael Lewis wrote Moneyball because he fell in love with a story. Te Mstory is about how intelligent innovation (the creative use of statistical analysis) in the face of market inefciency (the failure of all other teams to use available information productively) can overcome the unfairness of baseball economics (rich teams can buy all the best players) to enable a poor team to slay the giants. Lewis is an engaging storyteller and, along the way, introduces us to intriguing characters who carry forward the rags-to-riches plot. By the end, the story of the Oakland A’s and their general manager, Billy Beane, is so well told that we believe its portrayal of baseball history, economics, and competitive success. Te result is a new Horatio Alger tale that reinforces a beloved American myth and, all the better, applies to our national pastime. Te appeal of Lewis’s Moneyball was sufciently strong that Hollywood wanted a piece of the action. With a compelling script, smart direction, and the handsome Brad Pitt as Beane, Moneyball became part of mass culture and its perceived validity—and its legend—only grew. Tis book will attempt to set the record straight on Moneyball and the role of “analytics” in baseball. -
