  • Masculinity and Transnational Hindu Identity
Nidān, Volume 3, No. 2, December 2018, pp. 18-39 ISSN 2414-8636 Muscular Mahabharatas: Masculinity and Transnational Hindu Identity Sucheta Kanjilal University of Tampa [email protected] "Hence it is called Bharata. And because of its grave import, as also of the Bharatas being its topic, it is called Mahabharata. He who is versed in interpretations of this great treatise, becomes cleansed of every sin. Such a man lives in righteousness, wealth, and pleasure, and attains to Emancipation.” - Mahābhārata (18.5) translation by K. M. Ganguli Abstract The climax of the Sanskrit Mahābhārata is undeniably muscular, since it involves a kṣatriya family fighting a brutal but righteous war. Many 21st century Mahabharata adaptations not only emphasize the muscularity of the epic, but also flex these muscles in an arena beyond the Kurukṣetra battlefield: the world. Through an analysis of texts such as Chindu Sreedharan’s Epic Retold (2015) and Prem Panicker’s Bhimsen (2009), I suggest that the increased visibility of epic warrior narratives across global platforms indicates a desire to re-fashion a hypermasculine identity for Hindus in the transnational religio-political sphere. I see this as an attempt to distance Hinduism from Gandhi’s ‘passive resistance’ and colonial conceptions of the ‘effeminate native’. Instead, it aligns with the nationalist and global aims of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who emphasizes the importance of Hindu traditions and physical fitness for collective prosperity. While these new epic adaptations certainly broaden the reach of Hindu culture beyond national boundaries, I suggest exhuming only warrior narratives from the epic texts oversimplifies Hindu values and threatens a range of gender identities and religious affiliations.

But like most great institutions of higher learning, Northeastern had modest origins. At the end of the nineteenth century, immigrants and first-generation Americans constituted more than half of Boston’s population. Chief among the city’s institutions committed to helping these people improve their lives was the Boston YMCA. The YMCA became a place where young men gathered to hear lectures on literature, history, music, and other subjects considered essential to intellectual growth. In response to the enthusiastic demand for these lectures, the directors of the YMCA organized the “Evening Institute for Young Men” in May 1896. Frank Palmer Speare, a well- known teacher and high-school principal with considerable experience in the public schools, was hired as the institute’s director.

June 3, 2011 The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW Committee) Re: Supplementary information on Nepal scheduled for review by CEDAW during its 49th Session Dear Committee Members: This letter is intended to supplement the combined 4th and 5th periodic report of the government of Nepal, scheduled for review by this Committee during its 49th session. The Center for Reproductive Rights (the Center), an independent non-governmental organization, hopes to further the work of the Committee by reporting information concerning the rights protected in the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). Beginning on page 20, the Center respectfully suggests key questions to pose to the State Party during the session and offers for the Committee’s consideration potential recommendations to include in the 2011 Concluding Observations to Nepal. During the CEDAW Committee’s previous review of Nepal in 2004, the Committee expressed concern “at the status of women’s health, particularly rural women.”1 The Committee also stated that it was “also concerned that women’s health is adversely affected by factors such as early marriage and early pregnancy, inadequate family planning services and illiteracy, which is an obstacle to obtaining and effectively using health-related information.”2 The Committee recommended the State Party take the following steps: • Take further measures to improve the access of women, particularly rural women, to health-related services and information, including in regard to sexual and reproductive health, in an effort to reduce maternal mortality.3 1 Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW Committee), Concluding Observations: Nepal, para.

Sivasubramaniam3 # The Author(s) 2020 Abstract Music plagiarism is defined as using tune, or melody that would closely imitate with another author’s music without proper attributions. It may occur either by stealing a musical idea (a melody or motif) or sampling (a portion of one sound, or tune is copied into a different song). Unlike the traditional music, the Indian cinematic music is extremely popular amongst the public. Since the expectations of the public for songs that are enjoyable are high, many music directors are seeking elsewhere to “borrow” tunes. Whilst a vast majority of Indian cinemagoers may not have noticed these plagiarised tunes, some journalists and vigilant music lovers have noticed these activities. This study has taken the initiative to investigate the extent of plagiaristic activities within one Indian cinematic music industry.

  • Clataholic Mock Test Series 2020
CLATaholic Mock Test Series 2020 Mock Test 1 Section I- English Q.- Each set of questions is based on the passage. Questions are to be answered on the basis of what is stated or implied in the passage. For decades, there has been a deep rift between poetry and fiction in the United States, especially in academic settings; graduate writing programs in universities, for example, train students as poets or as writers of fiction, but almost never as both. Both poets and writers of fiction have tended to support this separation, in large part because the current conventional wisdom holds that poetry should be elliptical and lyrical, reflecting inner states and processes of thought or feeling, whereas character and narrative events are the stock-in-trade of fiction. Certainly it is true that poetry and fiction are distinct genres, but why have specialized education and literary territoriality resulted from this distinction? The answer lies perhaps in a widespread attitude in U.S. culture, which often casts a suspicious eye on the generalist. Those with knowledge and expertise in multiple areas risk charges of dilettantism, as if ability in one field is diluted or compromised by accomplishment in another. Fortunately, there are signs that the bias against writers who cross generic boundaries is diminishing; several recent writers are known and respected for their work in both genres. One important example of this trend is Rita Dove, an African American writer highly acclaimed for both her poetry and her fiction. A few years ago, speaking at a conference entitled “Poets Who Write Fiction,” Dove expressed gentle incredulity about the habit of segregating the genres.

Mehta is a contemporary director in the Hindi film industry, with ten films under his belt as a director and several other films worked in the capacity of the scriptwriter, he is known to cinema, but it has been only in very recent time that his work has been noticed, a few of them being: Shahid (2013), Citylights (2014), Aligrah (2015), and Simran (2017).Be it his earliest cookery shows KhanaKhazana on television or his first film Amrita, Hansal Mehta time and again showcased a unique perspective. A perspective that demands a study. The present research paper "Understanding style and artistry of Hansal Mehta: Through a prism of the auteur theory " attempts to get a clearer perspective of the filmmaker and his work through a close reading of his select films. The auteur theory explains the idea of a filmmaker being considered the author of his/her film. Indicating that a filmmaker with his intense contribution towards a film to be considered the author through a content analysis that theory will be tested out in the present research.
