The original texts include religious epics, Shakespeare’s plays, Bengali novels which were written pre- independence, and Hollywood films. This venture uses adaptation theory as well as postmodernist and postcolonial theories to examine how women and men are represented in the adaptations as well as how contemporary audience expectations help to create the identity of the characters in the films. -

Nationalism, Nation Making, & the Postcolonial States of Asia, Africa, & Eurasia RONALD GRIGOR SUNY I have benefited enormously from Lowell Barrington’s clarifying essays on ethnicity and nationalism. His distinction insisting on territorial- ity for the nation but not for ethnicity is very useful. At the same time, in our many discussions, I have argued that his de‹nition of the nation remains, for my money, too objectivist. So I have amended the de‹nitions he offers in his introductory chapter as a prelude to my own discussion of nationalism after independence. My additions are in brackets. “What makes nations different from other groups,” writes Barrington, “is that they are collectives [who feel they are] united by shared cultural features (such as language, myths, and values) and the belief in the right to territorial self-determination. Put another way, they are groups of people [who believe they are] linked by unifying cultural characteristics and the desire to con- trol a territory that is thought of as the group’s rightful homeland.” My amendments here are meant to emphasize the unease I have about too concrete a notion of “cultural features” or “cultural characteristics.” Having heard all my life about the importance of preserving ethnic culture and remaining unsure about what that entailed, I subscribe to a notion -

Collective Identity in Germany An Assessment of National Theories Sean Starkweather “Köln stellt sich quer - Tanz die AfD” by Elke Witzig is licensed under CC BY-SA-4.0 Beginning in the 18th century, the question of what makes a nation has occupied a prominent place in German politics. From the national theories of the 18th-century German Romantics, who identified cultural and ethnic factors as being the key determinants, to modern civic nationalists and postnationalists, who point to liberal civic values and institutions, the importance of collective identity and how it is oriented has remained an important topic for German scholars and policymakers. Using survey research, I assess the accuracy and relevance of these theories in contemporary German society. I find that, contrary to the optimism of modern thinkers, German collective identity remains aligned with the national theories of the Romantics, resulting in ethnic discrimination and heightened fears over the loss of culture through external ideological and ethnic sources. -

The theft of the Nobel happened in Santiniketan and our protagonist Bhanu, played by Mithunda, is based in Bolpur. We went to Bolpur twice, saw a lot of places. Given the story, I wanted everything to have that feel, his house to have a certain structure, and ultimately identified a hut that belongs to someone else where we will shoot. Sudipta Chakraborty We have a lot of outdoor all over Calcutta and that’s a huge tension because of the logistics and permissions involved in filming at Gorky Sadan, Dharamtala, south Calcutta.... It’s Calcutta in 2004 because that’s when the theft happened. The character roughly remains the same but I have to be careful not to bring in the new malls and flyovers. It’s not about capturing the city but to bring out the stark contrast with a village in the interiors. How Bhanu is almost like fish out of water when he comes to Calcutta. There were some changes in the final casting… The film is entirely centred around Mithun Chakraborty. I try to keep track of actors but when I’m in Calcutta I don’t get time to watch too many television serials. -

Sociologiska institutionen. 258 pp. Uppsala. ISBN 978-91-506-2302-4. The aim of this dissertation is two-fold. First, the discussion seeks to understand the concepts of nationalism and patriotism and how they relate to one another. In respect to the more criti- cal literature concerning nationalism, it asks whether these two concepts are as different as is sometimes assumed. Furthermore, by problematizing nation-branding as an “updated” form of nationalism, it seeks to understand whether we are facing the possible emergence of a new type of nationalism. Second, the study endeavors to discursively analyze the ”bottom-up” processes of national reproduction and re-definition in an online, post-socialist context through an empirical examination of the online debate and polemic about the new Polish patriotism. The dissertation argues that approaching nationalism as a broad phenomenon and ideology which operates discursively is helpful for understanding patriotism as an element of the na- tionalist rhetoric that can be employed to study national unity, sameness, and difference. Emphasizing patriotism within the Central European context as neither an alternative to nor as a type of nationalism may make it possible to explain the popularity and continuous endur- ance of nationalism and of practices of national identification in different and changing con- texts. -

Athens Journal of Philology - Volume 7, Issue 3, September 2020 – Pages 171-188 Re-Writing the Myth of Draupadi in Pratibha Ray’s Yajnaseni and Chitra Bannerjee Divakaruni’s The Palace of Illusions By Mohar Daschaudhuri* All history, accounts of religion, social thought and philosophy reflect woman as the “other” even while speaking for her. Myth constitutes the elemental structures and patterns which shape the thought of a people. This paper explores how Pritabha Ray‟s novel Yajnaseni and Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni‟s The Palace of Illusions re-write the myth of Draupadi, the legendary wife of the five Pandava warriors in the epic Mahabharata. The two contemporary women writers from India recreate a protagonist who voices her opinions, musings, desires in a first person narrative from a woman‟s point of view. As upholder of Dharma, she is at once a player and a pawn in the patriarchal tale of jealousy and revenge. Yet, remaining within the bounds of Dharma, Draupadi, the protagonist in the novels, interrogates the symbolic values attributed to femininity, the meaning of duty, loss and death. Through a feminist re-reading the authors redefine the notion of Svadharma (an individual‟s duties) vis-à-vis the duties of a woman towards her husband and her society. The re-invented myth resists „spousification‟ and deification of the woman, rendering her instead, a palpable character, vulnerable as well as independent. While Ray‟s character is in a search of a spiritual rebirth and relies on her inner deity, Krishna, for guidance all along the tortuous path of Dharma during her life and after her abandonment by her husbands, Divakaruni‟s heroine is a modern day adolescent, impetuous, intelligent and spontaneous. -

Film tourism sector has seen tremendous growth in the past few years. It represents a gateway to new and more intense ways of experiencing destinations. At the same time, it creates the potential for new communities by way of an exchange of insights, knowledge and experience among the tourists themselves. Films play a significant role in the promotion of tourism in various countries and different states of India. A film tourist is attracted by the first-hand experience of the location captured on the silver screen. Not only is film tourism an excellent vehicle for destination marketing, it also presents new product development opportunities, such as location tours, film museums, exhibitions and the theme of existing tourist attractions with a film connection. This report focusses on the concept of film tourism and the various initiatives taken by both the state and central government of India for boosting film induced tourism through their respective film production policies.
