Page - 3 Welcome To Hoop Time 2016

Dear Hoop Time Coordinator,

Basketball Victoria’s Hoop Time is entering an new and exciting era and we can’t wait for 2016 to get underway! I would like to take the opportunity to reflect on what was an amazing 2015 as we broke every participation record (for now the 5th year in a row!) As I now enter into my 7th year, I am so proud to be heading up this exciting program and I’m extremely proud of what we all achieved in 2015 & the direction this program continues to take!

Our first Hoop Time day was held on 23rd March in Mornington with the Mornington District Day and our final round robin day on 13th November at Mill Park with the Bundoora District Day. In between this time, we had 642 schools participate, coordinated a total of 212 round robin days (including a record 81 District Days linked in with SSV districts) comprising a record total of 4,819 teams and exceeded 43,300 participants for the first time ever. Even more importantly, we introduced approximately 13,000 kids to the sport of basketball through our Rookies division!

We had 28 regional final days consisting of teams from all over the State and only the best of the best made it through to our 4 State Grand Final days with the top 144 teams in Victoria vying for that all-important Hoop Time State Title. Our finals series concluded with an exciting opportunity for our final 2 Senior All Star Boys and 2 Senior All Star Girls teams. The CTI Melbourne United Basketball Club allowed us to hold our Sr ASB State Championship Final game prior to their NBL game against the Adelaide 36ers at Hisense Arena on the 6th December and for the first time ever, the Deakin allowed us to hold our Sr ASG State Championship Final game prior to their WNBL clash against the Canberra Capitals at the State Basketball Centre on the 13th December. Both games were a wonderful experience for all involved!

Our Hoop Time Minis program continued in 2015. The program that began in 2009 and targeted Grade 1’s and 2’s (for further details on this program, please go to page 20) saw 9 days held across 8 venues. On those days, we had 164 teams participate and approximately 1,500 kids taking part in the program. We are looking to build on this again in 2016, as these kids are the future of Hoop Time!

Last year also saw us have 2 interns throughout the year from Deakin and Victoria Universities! Dion Paull and Ash Fenech came on board from mid-July right through to the end of our finals series in late-November. They were both an invaluable asset and assisted in many areas of the program. They learned a lot in their role and loved their time at Basketball Victoria. I am very thankful for their professionalism & commitment, as they assisted in relieving the growing pressure throughout the busiest time of the year for Hoop Time and we would not have achieved the results we saw without their contribution in 2015! Well done guys and we wish you all the best in your future endeavours.

I would like to thank all of our coordinators and supervisors for a terrific job well done in 2015 and I sincerely hope that you all continue in 2016. Thank you to all the schools involved, in particular the teachers who work tirelessly to organise Hoop Time for their students, the coaches and parent helpers who the school on Hoop Time days and most importantly, to the many students who enjoyed their Hoop Time experience. Your efforts help ensure that the days continue to run. Also a special thanks to McDonald’s for their support in 2015. While McDonald’s will still be a supporter of Basketball Victoria, they will no longer be a sponsor of Hoop Time.

This year promises to be even more action packed as we continue to run days all throughout the year. With more new venues hosting Hoop Time tournaments and more new schools jumping on board, we’ll see more kids than ever participating and competing in the wonderful sport of basketball!

Join us for another year in the best primary school based basketball tournament in the country!

Chris Angus School Programs Coordinator, Basketball Victoria

Page - 4 Welcome from Basketball Victoria’s CEO

Hoop Time is one of our favourite programs here at Basketball Victoria. The opportunity to represent your school and play with your mates at a variety of skill levels is the best part about playing sport.

To be able to provide a platform for kids to learn and enjoy our great game through Hoop Time is something we are very proud of. Each year, we reach a little further geographically and the numbers continue to rise. The more kids in Victoria getting the opportunity to play basketball and participate in physical activity, the better!

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the schools, teachers, coaches and of course, the kids who put in a lot of work to make Hoop Time a huge success. It takes a lot of time and dedication to get this program up and running and for that, we thank you all for your contributions.

We hope you enjoy your Hoop Time experience in 2016, learn some new skills, make some new friends and who knows; maybe you’ll be off to the State Finals later this year! Best of luck.

Nick Honey Chief Executive Officer Basketball Victoria

Page - 5 What Is Hoop Time?

Basketball Victoria’s Hoop Time is a series of one-day basketball round robins held at local basketball stadiums around Victoria. With a 32-year history, the program offers children in Grade 3/4 (Junior) and Grade 5/6 (Senior) the opportunity to play in a fun inter-school competition with qualified referees and receive some great prizes along the way. Described as the “Twenty20 of basketball”, a game usually runs as 2 x 8 minute halves and provides plenty of fun and excitement in the shorter format. Hoop Time really is ‘Basketball For All’ and as a development program of Basketball Victoria, it caters for students at all levels of ability by having three different playing divisions. Schools do not have to exclude players because of lack of ability; therefore all players interested in basketball can have the thrill of competing for their school against other schools, sometimes for the first time. All Schools are to arrive at their designated stadium on their allocated Hoop Time day at 9.15am to register their arrival. The day will conclude no later than 2.45pm. The program culminates at the end of the year in a Regional Finals Series and a State Grand Final Series. We invite your school to join in the fun of one of the best primary school based tournaments in the country!

2016 Hoop Time Entry Details

Entry Fees

Basketball Victoria has kept costs for Hoop Time 2016 to a minimum.

1 – 10 teams (Junior / Senior combined) $70.00 per team 11 + teams (Junior / Senior combined) $60.00 per team District Days (Junior / Senior combined) $60.00 per team Minis Days (Grade 1 & 2 only) $5.00 per participant

AN INVOICE WILL BE SENT TO THE SCHOOL WITHIN A MONTH FROM WHEN ALL YOUR TEAMS HAVE COMPETED. DO NOT MAKE PAYMENT AT THE VENUE OR BEFORE AN INVOICE HAS BEEN RAISED.

Round Robin Venues and Dates

Much of the success of the Hoop Time program is due to the co-operation and support from local stadiums. We have been able to secure the use of many courts, making the competition accessible to a greater number of schools.

An entry form has been sent with this booklet, with a second form listing the details of all the Stadiums in 2016. A full calendar of dates for 2016 can be found on our website www.hooptimebasketball.com.au for you to select dates at your nearest venue. Every effort will be made to give schools dates that are originally requested; however, due to increasing entries for this program, new dates may be offered once original dates are full.

It would be greatly appreciated if schools can, where possible, request some of the early dates that are offered in June and July. These dates are often cancelled due to insufficient teams and then an attempt is made to book new dates in Term 3. However, this in effect, overfills the number of round robin days run each week in that term and makes it extremely busy to fixture, book referees, employ coordinators, etc.

Page - 6 Please note that there will not be any round robin days held in Term 4. Due to the increased number of finals to be run, it will be impossible to fixture any more dates late in Term 3 than are already listed. However, if dates that are booked do not suit, it is possible to book alternate dates in Terms 2 & 3 at some venues. Please contact Basketball Victoria if you wish to attend on an alternate date to those already listed.

Confirmation of the date of your Hoop Time day at your local stadium will be faxed or emailed to you once your entry has been received and processed into our system.

ENTRIES MUST BE RECEIVED A MINIMUM 2 WEEKS PRIOR TO YOUR REQUESTED DATE. Please note: the sooner you get your entries in, the greater the chance of you getting the date & venue of your choice.

Fixtures

Changes to your original Hoop Time entry will be accepted up until the fixture is released and sent out (usually 1-2 weeks prior to the tournament date). Once fixtures have been released for a particular round robin day, any team withdrawals that require a fixture change will incur a fee of $35 per team withdrawn. Additional teams entered once the fixture has been sent out will also incur a $15 fee (on top of the full entry). Team withdrawals within 3 business days of any Round Robin tournament will result in the full price being charged per team withdrawn.

It is extremely important to reply to receipted emails when requested, as this allows us to track who hasn’t received the information. This not only saves our time, but also yours and ensures that everyone receives necessary updates, including fixture changes when required.

Hoop Time – Rules

PLEASE NOTE: THERE HAVE BEEN SOME CHANGES TO THE RULES FROM 2015. PLEASE READ THROUGH CAREFULLY AND THOROUGHLY. • All games will be fixtured for 2 x 8 minute halves unless otherwise stated. (Shortened games will be 1 x 13 minute games). • It is imperative that games BEGIN ON TIME to enable the fixture to run to schedule, thus ensuring the day runs smoothly. The clock will be started at the scheduled time, with the late team receiving a ONE POINT PENALTY for each minute they are late. The Hoop Time Coordinator reserves the right to not penalise a team who may be running late due to circumstances outside their own control (e.g. accident). Schools are to call ahead if they believe they will be late for their first game. Not all circumstances will warrant leniency for being late. • The clock will stop on all whistles in the last minute of the second half ONLY when the score margin is 5 points or less. (Clock will stop on all whistles in the last minute of the game if games are reduced to 1 x 13 minute if the score is 5 points or less). • One 30-second timeout per team, per half will be allowed during which the clock will NOT stop, except in the last minute of the second half where the margin is 5 points or less. (One timeout per game, per team in a reduced 1 x 13 minute game). The ball DOES NOT advance after a timeout is called. • No timeouts allowed in the last 2 minutes of the first half or in the last minute of the second half if the clock does not stop. (No timeouts are allowed in the last 2 minutes of a reduced 1 x 13 minute game if the clock does not stop). No substitutions are allowed in the last minute of either half (unless the clock stops in the second half). • The 2 rule will apply after 4 team fouls have been committed in that half. The 5th team foul will result in 2 free shots. The juniors will shoot from the modified foul line, which is the closer line and seniors will shoot from the regular foul line. (Free throws are to be taken after the 5th team foul if playing a reduced 1 x 13 minute game). • A Player can only commit 5 personal fouls per game. On the 5th foul, the player is to be removed from the game.

Page - 7 • The Sin Bin Rule will be in place for all technical or unsportsmanlike fouls. If a player commits a technical or unsportsmanlike foul at any stage during a game, they must sit on the bench for 3 minutes of actual game time. This player can be replaced during those 3 minutes. Once the 3 minutes is up, the player can then retake to the court through the next available substitution. If the player is given a technical foul within the last 3 minutes of any half, the remaining time will carry over until the following half or game. • The Sin Bin Rule is also in place for any Bench Technical Fouls. If a Bench Tech is called, the offending person must clearly move away from the team’s bench area so that communication with the bench in any form is not possible for 3 minutes of actual match time. Once the 3 minutes are up, they can then return to the bench area and resume coaching/playing. • Any player or team official who receives more than one technical foul in a game will be disqualified and removed from the playing area and will take no further part in the tournament. • ‘Ugly’ Behaviour Policy – An ‘Ugly’ Behaviour Policy has been put in place for all Hoop Time days. This policy is to curb what is deemed to be ‘Ugly’ behaviour by any coaches, players or spectators towards officials or staff. A full copy of the policy will be available at every round robin day and a copy has been sent to every school. A copy is also available on the Hoop Time website www.hooptimebasketball.com.au • 5 seconds in the key, centre line violation and 8 seconds in the backcourt all apply. • Jump Balls will determine any disputed possession. • Full court ‘Man to Man’ defence is compulsory for the entire game in the Junior & Senior All Star Boys and All Star Girls sections (unless the mercy rule is being enforced). Teams in this section who deliberately play zone defence or a half court or full court press by not picking up a player each or drop back into the key will be penalised with the following: 1st time is a warning, 2nd time offensive team gets ball advanced to a base line throw in, 3rd time coach is awarded a Technical foul. • Mercy Rule: Mandatory 3-point line defence will be enforced when a team is leading by 14 points or more. The leading team must return beyond the 3-point line once possession is lost. The leading team cannot play defence outside of the 3-point line at any time. The ball will be returned to the offensive team immediately if they fail to comply. • A forfeit will be called if a team does not show up by half time in any game (or by the 6 minute mark if playing 1 x 13 minute games). In the event of a forfeit, the score will be marked down as 8-0 (or 6-0 if playing a 1 x 13 minute game). If the team arrives after the referee has called a forfeit, they can play the remainder of the game but the score will stay as the forfeit score. • The Future Stars/Rookies league permits a ratio of 3:2 (boys/girls or girls/boys) on the court at any one time. If a team is not able to field 2 girls on the court at any time they must notify the Hoop Time Coordinator immediately. If a team cannot play a minimum 2 girls on court they must play the ratio of 3 boys & 1 girl. If a team plays with either all boys or all girls, their results from the day will not count and they will be ineligible for finals if playing in the Future Stars league. A team of all girls may be eligible to play in the Rookies league at the request of the School Programs Coordinator at Basketball Victoria. • Each team is to nominate 1 competent person to assist on the score bench for each game. • Game results will be recorded on a modified scoresheet. • Players’ names are not required on the scoresheet. Only the singlet number of each player is necessary. Two players in the same team are not allowed to wear the same number. • Teams are only allowed to play a maximum of 10 players per Hoop Time day, including Regional & State Finals. • It is the responsibility of the WINNING team to ensure that the score sheet is delivered PROMPTLY at the conclusion of each game to the Hoop Time Coordinator. • Teams will be awarded 3 points for a win, 2 points for a draw, 1 point for a loss and 0 points for a forfeit. • In the case of two or more teams being tied on equal points at the end of the day, ladder positions will be decided by the result of those teams’ head to head game (e.g. If Team A & B are both on equal points at the end of the day, the team that won the game played between these teams would finish higher on the ladder). • Where this does not separate the teams, the overall percentage from all games played will be taken into account (this will most likely happen when there is a 3-way tie or if the head to head result between 2 teams was a draw). Page - 8 • Drawn games will be accepted, except if playing in a final. Where a final game is drawn, an overtime of 3 minutes will be played. For Round Robin tournaments - If there is still no winner after extra time, a shoot out will determine the result of the final. For Regional & State Finals - if there is still a tie after the additional 3 minutes, an additional 2 minutes will be played. If there is still a tie after this, the game will go to a shoot out. • OVERTIME RULES – No timeouts will be awarded during extra time. Team fouls carry over from the second half. The clock will stop in the last minute on all whistles of the OT period if the score is 5 points or less. No substitutions in the last minute of OT unless the clock stops. • SHOOTOUT RULES - Only the 5 players per team that are on the court at the end of extra time are eligible to participate in the shootout. The team listed first on the score sheet will shoot from the free throw line first. Teams will alternate free throws until all 5 players from each team have taken a free throw. If the scores are still tied after all 5 players from each team has shot, players resume from the start until one team scores and the other team misses. • Numbered uniforms are required. Using tape for numbers or writing number clearly on arms is acceptable. • Shorts should not have pockets in them. It is acceptable to have them sewn or taped up if these are to be used for playing in on the day. • Long Hair - we will be enforcing the following rule in relation to long hair: Plaits or braids will not be acceptable for players with long hair. All long hair can be placed in a regular loose ponytail or secured in a bun.

Player Eligibility • Hoop Time has three levels of competition. For maximum enjoyment it is imperative that players and teams are graded correctly.

• The players that participate in the Round Robin days within a particular team will be the same players that progress through to Regional Finals and beyond if their team wins a Round Robin Day or receives a wildcard into Regional or State Finals.

• Players are not allowed to swap teams during or between Round Robin Days or Finals Series, unless the team must add a player or players to make a team due to medical reasons or circumstances outside of the school’s control. The school must seek permission from Basketball Victoria’s Hoop Time Office staff for the transfer of players from one team to another prior to the event.

• Players competing for a school must be a current student at the school. No team is to play players that do not attend the school they are representing. If a player has played that is not a current student at the school, that team will forfeit all its points for the day.

Mixed Rookie Division Ø The Rookie League is for BEGINNERS ONLY (children who have never played basketball before or only for fun (i.e. not in any current domestic program). Children who play in any form of domestic competition, no matter how low the grade, MUST PLAY in the Future Stars.

Future Stars Division – THE FOLLOWING RULES MUST BE ADHERED TO: Ø Schools should enter mixed teams of an INTERMEDIATE STANDARD (that is, children that play ANY level of domestic competition ONLY.) However, it is preferred that strong or high level A Grade players still play in the All Stars Divisions if possible.

Ø A maximum of 4 A Grade, Div 1 or A Reserve players are allowed in any one Future Stars team.

Ø The following children are NOT allowed to compete in this section: o Any child that currently plays or has played representative basketball within the last 12 months – VJBL Victorian Junior Championship League, Victorian Junior League (Division 1, 2, 3 or 4) Regional League (East & North West), Rep Development teams or any Country Victoria Rep teams. o Any child that has played in the All Stars Division in the same year.

Page - 9 Ø Schools participating in Country Victoria that have players in a representative team or squad will also be required to enter a team in the All Star Division to allow that player or players to play. They are not eligible for Future Stars. Basketball Victoria reserves the right to grant special exemption in some cases to smaller country schools to play one rep player in a Future Stars side if the school cannot physically field an All Star Boys or All Star Girls team due to insufficient participants. This will be taken on a case-by-case basis and the school’s coordinator must seek prior approval from the Basketball Victoria office in order for any rep player to play in the Future Stars.

Ø Basketball Victoria’s Hoop Time Staff have the right to grant eligibility to any player in the Future Stars division who throughout the year is graded into a Representative team after their initial Round Robin day and prior to or during the Regional or State Finals. Permission must be sought by the school’s Hoop Time representative from Basketball Victoria PRIOR to the event if this does occur. Hoop Time Staff reserve the right to confirm any player’s playing status with the VJBL.

Ø In the event a team plays a rep player in a tournament, the penalty on the day will be as follows: the team can either play the remainder of their games with the ineligible player in the side but not qualify for Finals, or they cannot play the rep player for their remaining games and still be eligible for Finals, but all previous wins with the ineligible player will be overturned and given as a 8-0 forfeit to the opposition.

Ø In the event a team is discovered to have played an ineligible player after they have played in their Round Robin day, then any results that team had on the day will be overturned and, if they won the tournament, they will not progress through to Regional or State Finals. The team that came runner-up will take their place in the next round of competition.

All Stars Division Ø Schools should enter their BEST BOYS & GIRLS TEAMS in the All Star League (regardless of whether they play representative or domestic competition).

Ø There is a separate Boys and Girls section of the competition.

Ø In the event where a school cannot fill an All Star Girls team, one girl may play for the All Star Boys team as long as this is verified with Basketball Victoria’s Hoop Time Office Staff prior to your event.

Ø If a team is to field 2 girls in an All Star Boys team due to not having an AS Girls team, they must only be allowed to play one girl on the court at a time.

Ø No more than 2 girls per ASB team will be allowed.

Ø Boys are not permitted to play in any ASG side.

Uniforms

Hoop Time aims to have as many children participating in basketball as possible. Therefore, some leniency towards uniforms is shown to ensure schools that do not have uniforms available can still participate in the program.

Basketball Uniforms consist of 2 parts: shorts and top.

In regular competitions, all players in a team must have matching uniforms. All players must have the same colour shorts and tops and numbers must be displayed on both front and back of the tops. Should singlets not be available, PE polo tops are acceptable as long as they are all the same colour and have numbers on the back.

In Hoop Time, we will be enforcing the following uniform rules:

Shorts: Shorts as a rule must not have pockets; this is dangerous and can cause serious injury.

Preferably, we would like to have teams in the same, if not similar-coloured shorts.

Tops: Tops must have at least a number displayed on the back of the uniform.

Tops must be the same colour.

(Numbers that can be used in basketball: 4-15, 20-25, 30-35, 40-45, 50-55).

Page - 15 Basketball Victoria Uniform Policy

Basketball Victoria recognises that in circumstances where religious and cultural beliefs conflict with the standard dress code, that modification to the standard uniform may be required.

This may include, but is not restricted to the wearing of: - Traditional Muslim head scarf - Leggings or tracksuits to cover legs - Long sleeve tops to cover arms

Basketball Victoria states that headscarves are permitted to be worn, as (by rule) they pose no threat of injury. This includes headscarves or other fabric articles worn for religious purposes held in place by bobby pins or snap clips.

It is recommended that the colours of headscarves or other garments should resemble the official colours of the association/club/school they are representing.

Long Hair Policy

In Hoop Time, we will be enforcing the following rule in relation to long hair: - Plaits or braids will not be acceptable for players with long hair. - All long hair can be placed in a regular ponytail or secured in a bun.

Basketball for ALL

Basketball Victoria is continuing its commitment to providing access and opportunities for ALL to be involved in the game of Basketball. Whether participating by playing, coaching, officiating, volunteering or administrating, you can enjoy this great game.

Basketball Victoria has recognised that not all people are the same or need the same level of inclusion, so the ability to provide inclusive structured programs in a suitable environment enables participation and the growth of the sport to continue.

In 2015, Basketball Victoria made over 60 visits to specialist schools to hold clinics for students with mobility restrictions, intellectual disabilities, and those that are deaf or hard of hearing. Basketball Victoria also ran Wheelchair Basketball and Awareness clinics for over 40 mainstream schools to students of all ages.

If you have any students with special needs attending your school, be sure to find out more about the inclusive programs Basketball Victoria has on offer!

Did you know you don’t need to be in a wheelchair on a permanent basis to play Wheelchair Basketball? You can play Wheelchair Basketball if you are unable to jump, pivot or run at a speed and with the control, safety and endurance of an able-bodied player.

Basketball Victoria is currently offering Wheelchair Basketball clinics to both specialist and mainstream schools in Victoria. Clinics consist of basketball skills and drills in a basketball specific wheelchair and are run by Wheelchair Basketball coaches and athletes.

Inclusion in Hoop Time

Basketball Victoria and Hoop Time are proud to acknowledge and support the inclusion of ‘All Abilities’ into our programs. We encourage all levels and abilities to participate in Hoop Time and we wish to further promote the development and inclusion of those with physical, intellectual and hearing impairments. Hoop Time works closely with the Inclusion Department in providing an equal opportunity to participate in mainstream programs, thus encouraging unity and equality within the Basketball arena.

In 2015, we had a number of special schools successfully participate in Hoop Time. We encourage all Special and Special Developmental Schools to get on board and participate in Hoop Time. If one or more children at your school have a disability and would like to participate in Hoop Time with their peers, please contact Basketball Victoria so we can accommodate and make any necessary changes. Subsidies are available to schools and for more information, please contact Chris Angus on 03 9837 8084.

Sporting Schools Aussie Hoops Program Aussie Hoops is Basketball 's national introductory program for children of ALL abilities aged 5-10 years. The program incorporates skill activities, minor games and modified matches in a fun and safe environment to ensure participants have the best experience possible. Aussie Hoops can be a great next step for children who have participated in a Skill, Fun & Play clinic at school.

Basketball Victoria, in conjunction with your local association, can offer the Aussie Hoops program to be held directly within your school. The program can be held either during school hours or after school.

The program will run once a week for 5-8 weeks, with each session being 45-60 minutes, depending upon your timetable.

For more information and to book your school’s Aussie Hoops program, please contact Samantha Kelsall, Basketball Development Officer, via email: [email protected] or phone: 03 9837 8019

Skill, Fun & Play Clinics

Basketball Victoria would like to invite the children from your school to participate in a Skill, Fun & Play Clinic.

The Skill, Fun & Play Clinics aim to teach primary school aged students of all abilities the skills of basketball in a fun and safe environment.

Students will participate in basic drills to develop the fundamental basketball skills including dribbling, passing, catching, shooting and basic body movement. The children then use these skills whilst playing some fun basketball games.

The clinics are flexible and can be planned around your school timetable. All primary school aged students are invited to participate in these clinics.

Skill, Fun & Play Clinics are a great way for children to learn and improve their basketball skills with an emphasis on fun and participation. There are also prizes and giveaways for the children on the day.

Please Note: SF&P is not available in all areas and availability will be dependent upon coach availability and location.

For further information and to book your school’s Skill, Fun & Play Clinic, please contact Samantha Evans, Basketball Development Officer, via Email: [email protected] or phone: 03 9837 8019

Page - 18 Hoop Time Minis Hoop Time and Skill, Fun & Play have joined forces in the program called Hoop Time Minis. The initiative was created to provide Grade 1’s and 2’s with a unique, safe and fun learning experience where they can test out their basketball skills and be introduced to the sport in a supportive and non-competitive environment. Hoop Time Minis days are split into 2 sections. The morning session consists of Skill, Fun and Play skill development with coaches encouraging kids to have a go and build their confidence in the areas of dribbling, passing and shooting. The afternoon session gives the kids an opportunity to put their newly developed skills into practice in some fun games whereby team spirit and working together is promoted. In 2015, we had approximately 1,500 kids participate in the Hoop Time Minis program at 8 venues across Melbourne. Hoop Time Minis in 2016 will be available at select venues across Victoria to ensure all kids have an opportunity to get involved in Basketball. For more information or to register your interest in our Minis days, please go to our website: www.hooptimebasketball.com.au to get a full 2016 calendar of Hoop Time events in your area.

Page - 20 Teaching Points for Players SHOOTING When preparing to shoot, the shooting hand is underneath the ball with the fingers spread keeping the ball off the palm of the hand. The ball can rest on the "pad" of the thumb. The non-shooting hand is brought to the side of the ball for balance and control. The shooting elbow is pointed to the ring and is under the ball. A good shooting stance begins with feet shoulder width apart, toes to the basket, knees slightly bent, back straight, noes behind the toes and head in the middle. Pushing from the feet and extending up on the toes, the shooting arm moves in an upward motion slowly releasing the non-shooting hand from the ball. The ball is released when the arm is fully extended following through with a snap of the wrist pointing at the basket. Shooting should always be made in one single motion. It is vital to always practice using both your right and left hands. At the end of the shot your elbow should be above your eyes (to make sure you pushed upwards and not towards their basket), your wrist should be bent and your fingers should be spread.

DEFENSE Defensive stance is wide (shoulder width apart) with knees bent, back straight, head up, nose behind the toes, head in the middle and hands up. Defensive movement is a shuffle using short steps, doing a wide stance whilst ensuring feet don't cross. If moving to your left, move your left foot first. If moving right, move your right foot first. This will take you from your "big" stance to a "bigger" stance. Then move your other foot to return to your "big" stance. One hand remains up to pressure the pass while the closest hand to the ball is used to mirror the movement of the ball. The defense should remain an arms distance away from the offense. If the defense gets too close, it makes it easier for the offense to drive past. If the offense is driving past, run after them.

BALL HANDLING When handling the ball, keep it off the palm and on the fingers ensuring fingers are spread for better ball control, wide stance, knees bent, back straight, head up and good balance. Move the ball from hand to hand over the head using fingertips to tap the ball. Move down the body tapping the ball from hand to hand in front of the waist and then bending down to tap in front of the lower leg. For a body wrap, the ball is passed around the waist in a rotating action, moving around the knees, waist and head. A wide stance is used for a leg wrap with the ball passed around one leg at a time in a circular motion. The ball can also be passed around the legs in a figure eight action.

SKILL GAME - Sideline basketball Divide the group into 2 teams Each team lines up along the sideline on opposite sides to each other The coach gives each players on each team a number The coach calls out a number and throws 2 balls into the centre of the court The players with the numbers are called and race in to collect a ball, dribble to the hoop and shoot Once a shot is successful, the coach begins again calling out another number Variations: The coach only throws out 1 ball. Players must try to gain possession of the ball and be the first to score a basket. If the defense gains possession through a then they must take the ball back to the half court before they begin their next attempt to score The coach can call out more than 1 number so the players have to work as a team to score
