After a crazy year in 2014 we are ready for another incredible year of McDonald’s Hoop Time in 2015. I would like to take the opportunity to reflect on what was an amazing year last year as we broke every participation record (AGAIN!) As I now enter into my 6th year, I am so proud to be heading up this exciting program and I’m extremely proud of what we all achieved in 2014 & the direction this program continues to take! Our first McDonald’s Hoop Time day was held on 20th March in Mornington with the Mornington District Day & our final round robin day on 14th November at Mill Park with the Bundoora District Day. In between this time, we had 652 schools participate, coordinated a total of 203 round robin days (including a record 76 District Days linked in with SSV districts) comprising a record total of 4,701 teams and broke 42,000 participants for the first time ever. Even more importantly, we introduced approximately 12,500 kids to the sport of basketball through our Rookies division! We had a record 28 regional final days comprising 455 teams from all over the State and the best of the best made it through to our 4 State Grand Final days with the top 144 teams in Victoria vying for that all- important McDonald’s Hoop Time State Title. Our finals series concluded with an exciting opportunity for our final 2 Senior All Star Boys and 2 Senior All Star Girls teams: the Melbourne United Basketball Club allowed us to hold our 2 State Championship Final games prior to their NBL game against the New Zealand Breakers at Hisense Arena on the 14th December. It was a great day and a wonderful atmosphere with two very competitive finals. We had our McDonald’s Hoop Time Minis program continue in 2014. The program that began in 2009 and targeted Grade 1’s and 2’s (for further details on this program please go to page 20) saw 9 days held across 8 venues. In those days, we had 160 teams participate and approximately 1,500 kids taking part in the program. We are looking to build on this again in 2015, as these kids are the future of McDonald’s Hoop Time!! This year also saw us have an intern throughout the year from Federation University! Melissa Thomas came on board from the middle of July right through to the end of our finals series at the end of November. She was an invaluable asset and assisted in many areas of the program. She learned a lot in her role and loved her time at Basketball Victoria. I am very thankful for her professionalism & commitment, as she assisted in relieving the growing pressure throughout the busiest time of the year for McDonald’s Hoop Time and we would not have achieved the results we saw without her contribution in 2014! Well Done Mel & we wish you all the best in your new role at Ballarat Basketball Association! I would like to thank all of our coordinators and supervisors for a terrific job well done in 2014 and I sincerely hope that you all continue on in 2015. A big thank you to McDonald’s for another great year of support and sponsorship in our 31st year of partnership, it is wonderful to see that this program still continues to grow after so many years. Thank you to all the schools involved, in particular the teachers who work tirelessly to organise McDonald’s Hoop Time for their students, the coaches and parent helpers who assist the school on McDonald’s Hoop Time days and most importantly to the many students who enjoyed their McDonald’s Hoop Time experience and ensure that the days continue to run. This year promises to be even more action packed as we continue to run days all throughout the year, we continue to see new venues hosting McDonald’s Hoop Time tournaments, we see more new schools jumping on board & we see even more kids participating & competing in this wonderful sport of basketball! Join us for another year in the best primary school based basketball tournament in the country! Ronald McDonald at our State Grand Final Days Page - 5 What Is McDonald’s Hoop Time? McDonald’s Hoop Time is a series of one-day basketball round robins held at local basketball stadiums around Victoria. With a 31-year history, the program offers children in Grade 3/4 (Junior) and Grade 5/6 (Senior) the opportunity to play in a fun inter-school competition with qualified referees and receive some great prizes along the way. Described as the “Twenty20 of basketball”, a game usually runs as 2 x 8 minute halves and provides plenty of fun and excitement in the shorter format. McDonald’s Hoop Time really is ‘Basketball For All’ and as a development program of Basketball Victoria, it caters for students at all levels of ability by having three different playing divisions. Schools do not have to exclude players because of lack of ability; therefore all players interested in basketball can have the thrill of competing for their school against other schools, sometimes for the first time. All Schools are to arrive at their designated stadium on their allocated McDonald’s Hoop Time day at 9.15am to register their arrival. The day will conclude no later than 2.45pm. The program culminates at the end of the year in a Regional Finals Series and a State Grand Final Series. We invite your school to join in the fun of one of the best primary school based tournaments in the country! McDonald’s Hoop Time Entry Details Entry Fees Basketball Victoria has kept costs for McDonald’s Hoop Time 2015 to a minimum. 1 – 10 teams (Junior / Senior combined) $65.00 per team 11 + teams (Junior / Senior combined) $55.00 per team District Days (Junior / Senior combined) $55.00 per team Minis Days (Team of 7-8 players) $30.00 per team AN INVOICE WILL BE SENT TO THE SCHOOL IN THE MONTH IN WHICH YOUR TEAMS ARE COMPETING. DO NOT MAKE PAYMENT AT THE VENUE OR BEFORE AN INVOICE HAS BEEN RAISED. Round Robin Venues and Dates Much of the success of the McDonald’s Hoop Time program is due to the co-operation and support from local stadiums. We have been able to secure the use of many courts, making the competition accessible to a greater number of schools. An entry form has been sent with this booklet with a second form listing the details of all the Stadiums in 2015. A full calendar of dates for 2015 can be found on our website www.hooptimebasketball.com.au for you to select dates at your nearest venue. Every effort will be made to give schools dates that are originally requested; however, due to increasing entries for this program, new dates may be offered once original dates are full.

Making Your Career In Basketball – Case Studies The US College Experience Making Your Career in Basketball Case Studies Making Your Career In Basketball – Case Studies How to use the case studies? Basketball is a sport that presents many opportunities, throughout the world, to play professionally or to combine study with playing. It is certainly possible to have a career as a professional basketballer, although as with any athlete, there is a limit as to how long this career can last. The very best Australian athletes may make enough in their basketball career to “set themselves up for life”, however for most players, a career after basketball needs to be found. These case studies are in two parts: Australians who are currently on scholarship at a US College; Australians who have played professionally. The case studies will highlight the experiences these players have had, and the information they wish they knew earlier, but probably learnt the “hard way” (through experience). The case studies are not a guarantee that you will have the same experience as these players, they are simply some information that may assist you as you determine what your career will be. Basketball Australia would particularly like to thank each of the athletes for taking the time to provide information about their experiences. We would also like to thank Ian Stacker for his work in compiling the information from student-athletes at US Colleges. Don’t be afraid to set your goals and then to do the hard work that is required to achieve them! © Basketball Australia, 2009 Making Your Career In Basketball – Case Studies The US College Experience The US College Experience Many Australian athletes play in US Colleges, where the emphasis is on being a “student-athlete” (i.e.
