The CLI is an evaluated inventory of all landscapes having historical significance that are listed on or eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, or are otherwise managed as cultural resources through a public planning process and in which the NPS has or plans to acquire any legal interest. The CLI identifies and documents each landscape’s location, size, physical development, condition, landscape characteristics, character-defining features, as well as other valuable information useful to park management. Going Down to South Park: Reporting the News on Television’S Most Politically and Socially Irreverent Animated Series
Going Down to South Park: Reporting the News on Television’s Most Politically and Socially Irreverent Animated Series By Todd Smilovitz Abstract The image of the journalist on South Park is not one to be proud of. Journalists appear on more than half of the episodes in the show’s first nine seasons, but they are mostly purveyors of news that is opinionated, baseless, soft, sentimental, naïve, late-breaking and/or sensationalistic. Behind all of this shallow reporting is a quest by news media for ratings: the profit motive distorts news. The fact that almost all South Park journalism is broadcast news, which naturally tends to focus on sound bites rather than in-depth analysis, only enhances this effect. Whether the image of the journalist on South Park is a reflection of the modern American media, or vice versa, is left unsettled and to the eye of the beholder. * * * “A Sexy Action News Team Special Report: ‘Cough Medicine Abuse in School’ with the Sexy Action School News Team. It’s the report you can’t afford to miss.”1 -- Announcer setting up the boys’ final attempt to grab high ratings for their elementary school news show While this Sexy Action News Team special report could actually be seen as investigative journalism, it only comes about after more sensationalistic methods for becoming the number Going Down to South Park By Todd Smilovitz 2 one South Park Elementary School news show fail. In other words, the serious, investigative content of the show is only incidental to the profit motive. Live, late-breaking special reports by eyewitness news teams are the real king of South Park journalism. -

Parenting Transgender, Gender-Creative and Gay Children
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: LIFE UNCHARTED: PARENTING TRANSGENDER, GENDER-CREATIVE AND GAY CHILDREN Jessica Ann Vooris, Doctor of Philosophy, 2016 Dissertation directed by: Professor Katie King, Department of Women’s Studies Gender non-conformity is often seen as an indication of a future queer sexuality, but children are thought to be too young to actually be gay or trans. Life Uncharted: Parenting Transgender, Gender-creative, and Gay Children seeks to answer questions about what it means to be a "transgender," "gender-creative" or "gay" child, and examines the experiences of families who parent against the norm, raising children who break assumptions about the body, gender, identity and desire. Drawing from media analysis, ethnography of parent blogs and family gender conferences, along with interviews with 28 families, I argue that these parents engage in "anticipation work" as they manage anxiety and uncertainty about their children's behavior, attempt to predict and manage their children's futures, and explain their decisions to others. While television documentaries offer simple narratives that often reify binary expectations of gender, and explain that transgender children are "trapped in the wrong body," my ethnographic research and interviews shows that defining a transgender or gender-creative or gay child is more complex and it is not always clear how to separate gender expression, identity, and sexuality. As children socially transition at younger ages, when memory is just beginning to form, their relationships to the body and the notion of being "transgender" is in flux. Parents emphasize being comfortable with ambiguity, listening to children and LGBTQ adults, and accepting that it’s not always possible to know what the future brings. -

Signed Name of student: Jim Weijs Student number: s4363051 ABSTRACT Weijs S4363051/3 William Faulkner is one of the greatest American authors, and especially one of the greatest authors on the American South. Brad Paisley is a contemporary country musician whose songs involve the South and who uses similar themes to describe Southern culture as William Faulkner. In this thesis, I will analyze what kind of themes and ideas the twentieth century author on the one hand, and the contemporary country artist on the other hand, express through their cultural works. There are a number of questions that I aim to answer: what are the differences between Faulkner as a modernist author writing for an elite audience, and Paisley describing the South through his country music? What themes do the two artists use to express their views on the South? What is Southern identity according to Faulkner and Paisley?
