*Ten percent of the weekly offertory this weekend March 1st will be channeled to support this effort.this effort.

Our parishes are taking action to feed our poor neighbors overseas and help reduce global poverty! Join your fellow parishioners on March 7 at 10 AM at South Boston Catholic Academy ( 866 East Broadway), for Helping Hands meal-packaging event presented by Catholic Relief Services and Stop Hunger Now. Our goal is to pack 10,000 bags to help feed vulnerable children, women and men in the West African country of Burkina Faso.

Our participation in Helping Hands also supports CRS programs that assist people in Burkina Faso to develop skills so they can become economically independent. Those receiving the meals you will help package will learn new ways to earn an income through basic skills taught by CRS, such as how to grow a garden, make cloth or raise poultry.

To meet our meal packaging goal, we are in the need of donations and volunteers. We are hoping to raise $5,000 and assemble 40 to 80 volunteers. Please consider making a donation or volunteering your time for this event. Online registration and donations may be made by visiting the CRS website at http://helpinghands.crs.org/events.

The Second Sunday of Lent South Boston, MA Gate of Heaven, St Brigid, St Monica-St Augustine Parishes

“The Spirituality of the Shovel” Given on the First Sunday of Lent, February 22, 2015 By Msgr. Liam Bergin, South Boston

If the Olympic Games are held in Boston in 2024 may I be the first to suggest a new sporting event: snow shoveling. If that is the case we can be assured of gold, silver and bronze medals here in South Boston! Amid this week’s snow as we cleared our streets and sidewalks, Lent began. We were signed with the ashes on Wednesday last and today we gather on ice for the first Sunday of Lent.

The gospel on the first Sunday of Lent is always about the temptation of Jesus in the desert. Jesus had just been baptized and the voice of the Father proclaimed, “this is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.” Now, in the temptations, his sonship is put to the test, his relationship with God the Father is on trial. Satan offers power, riches and comfort – he always does – if Jesus will deny his sonship and bow down and worship the Prince of Darkness. While Jesus recognizes that the things that are offered are not necessarily bad things in themselves, he refuses to deny God and to compromise his relationship with the Father.

That’s what Lent is about. It is about recognizing that we are daughters and sons of God. It is about coming back to the Father and to be in proper relationships with each other.

Now, these past few weeks have been really frustrating with record snowfalls and temperatures colder than anything I have ever experienced before. Two-way street became one-way streets before they became no-way streets. Schools have been closed; the bus and T are crippled; schedules have been interrupted; so much has been cancelled. Many lost work that for some entailed a loss of income.

So, may I ask a question? It is not “could God be saying something to us in the middle of all this?” No, the proper question is “what exactly is God saying to us, the snow bound people of Boston?” The Old Testament speaks of God’s loving relationship with his Chosen People. So, what about us, God’s Frozen People?

Dare I suggest a “Spirituality of the Shovel” that has three fundamental points? 1. We are not in controlcontrol.... There are forces out there that are bigger and stronger than we are. The weather reminds us of this but it goes beyond that. Things happen in our lives that no amount of preparation or insurance or underwriting can prepare us for. There is hurt and disappointment, failure, broken relationships, sickness even death. No one of us chooses where and when we are born. We did not choose our parents or siblings, our nationality or ethnicity, our circumstances or our faith. All of this reminds us that life is a gift, given to us by God who is Father. It is entrusted to us and we seek to use it as best we can. But, remember, we are not in control. 2. We are all in this together. So often our lives are so busy that we fail to notice those around us, those who live with us or next to us, above or below us, near or far. Walking around these days I have been struck by so many people talking to neighbors they barely knew as they shoveled. Crisis creates community. It reminds us too that we are not just random individuals. No, we are a community. We are sisters and brother who are one in Jesus Christ and we are all in this together. 3. We are blessed. Yes, I will say it again: we are blessed. This snow will pass. In a few weeks time we will look at photographs on our phones and reminisce on the “Blizzard of February 2015.” Yes, it is awful now but it will pass. Yet, there are people on our planet for whom this kind of thing is a daily reality. Unending, unceasing, always! There is famine, drought, war and disease. Helpless, hopeless, powerless! And, what about us? We are blessed.

The Spirituality of Lent; the “Spirituality of the Shovel”. Prayer; almsgiving; fasting. We are not in control; we are in this together; we are blessed. Already our Lenten journey is underway. But as residents of South Boston we have a head start. There is gold in sight!

March 1, 2015 9 Gate of Heaven, St Brigid, St Monica-St Augustine Parishes South Boston, MA Praying During Lent In the Morning: It can be quite transformative of our family bonds, in faith, to pause very briefly to pray together. This might be a spontaneous prayer, while we are laying in bed with our spouse, Lord, be with us today, or Dear, I ask the Lord to give you strength and peace today at your meeting. Perhaps we are rushing around each other in the kitchen, grabbing breakfast. It can be wonderful to pause to pray, simply asking the Lord to be with each of us in what we are about to do. In the Car:In Car: So many of us spend a fair amount of time in the car, often with other members of our family. These can be nice times to begin or end the trip, with a very brief prayer. Bless our shopping tonight. Help us be grateful for the gifts you give us. May this food/these clothes help us be mindful of those who have so much less than we do. Or, Bless Ann at practice today. Give her gratitude and delight in the gifts you give her. Help her to do her best, to encourage others, and to learn what you offer her today. Or, Lord, as we go to Bill and Ann's for dinner, we thank you for our friendship with them, and we ask you to bless this night with all the graces you might offer us in the care we have for one another; we ask this in Jesus' name. Or, Lord, as we drive to church, we thank you for our faith and for this chance to be together with our parish community; please allow us to hear your Word, to give you thanks and praise, and to be nourished for the mission you give us this week. Simple Rituals during prayer ––– trace the Cross of the forehead of a loved one: It can be so easy to add gestures that bring powerful prayer to our family life. One of the simplest and most natural is to trace a cross on a loved one's forehead. It can speak volumes to a young child, if his or her parents were to give them this gesture of love and prayer. This ritual can be done everyday, when we part for the day, or at bed time, or it can be reserved for special prayers of blessing before a big event. And, it can be a powerful, faith-filled ritual for a husband and wife, as part of an every day pattern, or at times of great intimacy, to touch each other in blessing. Praying for Each Other: The most important part of family prayer is perhaps the easiest to overlook - how we hold each other up to the Lord. Even when we are not physically together, as a praying family, we want to pray for each other. In reality this means that I have a pattern of talking with the Lord about the people I love most dearly, each and every day. They become part of my very relationship with God. Whether we are a married couple with young children, or I am a single parent, or if my children have grown up and begun lives of their own, this aspect of family prayer is so important. My spouse and I may not share our faith; perhaps my spouse doesn't pray at all; but I can talk with the Lord about my spouse every day - sometimes asking for help, sometimes just expressing my gratitude, sometimes begging for the gift of faith for my spouse. May our Lord bless our praying, in the community of our family, these days of Lent.
