University of Cagliari Welcome to UNICA How to reach UNICA The city of Cagliari Cagliari is the political, administrative, economic and cultural centre of Sardinia. Inhabited ever since prehistoric times the city sums up the entire history of the island, struggled over by Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Pisans, Aragonese and Savoyards. It is of Phoenician-Punic origin (Karalis) and there are still some imposing Roman ruins to be seen today. Cagliari – Castello “the Old Town” Built on seven hills that identify other city districts (Castello, Tuvu Mannu, Tuvixeddu, Monte Claro, Monte Urpinu, Bonaria, San Michele), the city has its originary nucleus in Castello district, the highest point of the city overlooking the surrounding area. Cagliari – Poetto, the beach Seven Kilometres of white sandy beach inside the city, the favourite destination for every native of Cagliari - “Cagliaritani” - for a break all year around. Cagliari is city of angels, full of coulor, sound, taste and life The Gulf of Angels a city suspended among sky, earth and water. Water in Cagliari is not only the sea. A few steps fro long beach lie lagoons and natural reserves unique all over Europe. History and Tradition When everything was just around the corner …. You can find the list here: http://www.unica.it/pub/english/ No formal proof of language competence is currently required in Italian Language. However, students taking courses in English should have a proficient knowledge of both written and spoken English ( level B1) UNIVERSITY LANGUAGE CENTRE Our University Language Centre (CLA) organises courses in: Arabic, Catalan, Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, and Italian as a foreign language. The courses are held by professional teachers, native speakers of the language, who use advanced technology in order to develop the students’ skills further; this includes audio, video, computing materials, audio-active laboratories and a multimedia laboratory with self-learning facilities. Italian Language Course The University of Cagliari, in collaboration with the University Language Centre, offers Italian Language Courses to its Erasmus foreign students. Courses are held at the Centro Linguistico di Ateneo. UNICA organizes Italian Language Courses for students interested in attending a 10 week course in 5 levels: elementary and intermediate : A1 - A2- B1- B2 – C1(60 hours each – 6 ECTS credits). Each year the University of Cagliari organizes an Italian Summer School, in July and September each course lasts 40 hour in total. The language courses are available for the following levels: A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1 Libraries at UNICA The University Library was founded in 1792. With a collection of hundreds of manuscripts, thousands of autograph letters and a rich collection of works of the XVI and XVII centuries and its beautiful XVII century hall the Library is one of the most important of the island. All Faculties, Institutions and Departments of this University have their own libraries, where students can find publications, books, reviews and microfilms on specific subjects. Information on opening times can be obtained from the respective Faculties, Institutions and Departments or in the website at http://www.unica.it/sba/biblioteche/orari.php Sports Facilities There are a number of gyms in Cagliari offering a variety of sports activities from body building to dance, from volleyball to swimming; just look around for the one which is closest to you. If you enjoy football, Cagliari is the place for you because it hosts some of the most famous football clubs in Italy as Cagliari Football Club plays in the Campionato Serie A, the major league in Italy. The University of Cagliari also has a sports centre: the C.U.S. or Centro Universitario Sportivo (University Sports Centre). ENJOY CASTEDDU PLACEMENT Every faculty organizes internship programmes at local businesses and institutions, which puts a student’s educational training into practice and gives EXCHANGE students the opportunity to acquire specific skills on their field of study. The internship will be recognized with credits as an integral part of the Transcript of Records ESN The Erasmus Student Network is made of volunteers, students of the University of Cagliari and ex-Erasmus students. I greet you all cordially: workers, business people, authorities, the families present and, in particular, Archbishop Arrigo Miglio, and the three of you who have told us about your problems, about your expectations and also about your inspirations. With this visit — as I said — I am starting with you, who make up the world of work. With this meeting I want above all to express my closeness to you, especially to the situations of suffering: to the many young people out of work, to people on unemployment benefits, or on a temporary basis, to business and tradespeople who find it hard to keep going. I am very familiar with this situation because of my experience in Argentina. I myself was spared it but my family wasn’t. My father went to Argentina as a young man full of illusions “of making it in America”. And he suffered in the dreadful recession of the 1930s. They lost everything! There was no work! And in my childhood I heard talk of this period at home.... I never saw it, I had not yet been born, but I heard about this suffering at home, I heard talk of it. I know it well! However, I must say to you: “Courage!”. Nevertheless I am also aware that for own my part I must do everything to ensure that this term “courage” is not a beautiful word spoken in passing! May it not be merely the smile of a courteous employee, a Church employee who comes and says “be brave!” No! I don’t want this! I want courage to come from within me and to impel me to do everything as a pastor, as a man.

Interdisciplinary Study for Dating St. Francesco Convent in Cagliari (XIII-XXI Century) By Caterina Giannattasio Silvana Maria Grillo† Valentina Pintus This study concerns the Franciscan monastery, situated in the historic centre of Cagliari (Sardinia, Italy). It was founded in the 13th century, and transformed up to the present day. Its historical-stratigraphical complexity and the lack of data about its evolution led us to carry out an interdisciplinary inquiry. The investigation began with the use of a laser scanner survey aimed at defining a chronological hypothesis applied to the building which was based on reconstruction of historical maps, examination of masonry techniques and stratigraphic analyses. The dating obtained led to the choice of masonry samples to compare with other local and contemporary buildings where the chronology is well-known with the aim of confirming previous hypothesis. Analysis of the masonry samples allowed an understanding of their actual structure and composition, with reference to specific historical events. The mineralogical-petrographic characterization of building materials was essential. Plaster and mortar have been studied with instrumental techniques (OM, X-Ray diffraction) to analyze their components. The data obtained lead to a better knowledge of the Franciscan complex and this is essential for a restoration project respecting all its historical signs. The data is also very useful for dating other local buildings characterized by the same masonry techniques. Introduction This paper illustrates the results of an interdisciplinary methodology, developed by a team of researchers which involved restoration experts, surveyors and a petrographer, with the aim of obtaining a complete knowledge of the building analyzed.

Genoa, October 11, 2019 – Costa Cruises announces big changes intended to further increase the company's presence in Sardinia and Sicily. The first concerns Costa Smeralda, the new flagship currently nearing completion at the Meyer shipyard in Turku, Finland. During the 2020 summer season, from May 28 to September 24, Costa Smeralda will be in Cagliari every Thursday, from 7.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., making a total of 18 calls. The one-week itinerary will include Savona (Saturday), Marseilles (Sunday), Barcelona (Monday), Palma de Mallorca (Tuesday), Cagliari (Thursday) and Civitavecchia (Friday). From October 1, 2020 to April 8, 2021, it will be Palermo's turn to welcome Costa Smeralda every Thursday, from 7.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m., for a total of 28 calls. The itinerary will remain unchanged, with Palermo replacing Cagliari. In addition to Costa Smeralda, Costa Diadema will also be calling at Palermo every Tuesday from April to the end of September 2020, while during the winter of 2020/21, Costa Fortuna will arrive every Friday. Costa's calls in Palermo from January 2020 to April 2021 will therefore increase to 77 in total. The second development relates instead to Costa Pacifica. Following the changes made to the Costa Smeralda summer cruises, Costa Pacifica will stop off in Catania, instead of Cagliari, every Wednesday from June 3, 2020 to November 2020, with the following itinerary: Genoa, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Malta, Catania and Civitavecchia.
