The site comprises a detached dwelling, and outbuildings situated close to the southern boundary. There is a dilapidated wooden garage shed in the north-west corner of the site, opening onto Dellows Lane. There are trees and hedges situated around the boundaries and scattered across the site. Lavender Cottage is a Grade II Listed Building. The site is not within a Conservation Area and there are no Tree Preservation Orders applying to trees on or adjacent the site. 1.2.2 The proposal is to divide the plot in two and construct a new dwelling in the northern division of the site, with associated drive, detached garage and landscaping. 1.3 The Tree Survey 1.3.1 I visited the site on 05/01/2021. Unless otherwise stated all observations were made from ground level and tree dimensions were measured. The survey was to assess trees in relation to proposed development and should not be relied upon as a tree safety survey. 1.3.2 Data from the survey is contained in the Tree Survey Schedule at APPENDIX 2. The Tree Survey Plan at APPENDIX 3 shows the location of the trees in relation to the existing site layout and their quality, as categorised in accordance with “Trees in relation to design, demolition and construction – Recommendations” (BS:5837:2012). The categorisation is intended to assist in determining which trees should be removed or retained in the event of development. BS5837 is a standard reference document used by local planning authorities and the Planning Inspectorate when considering trees in the development context. The categories are summarised as follows: • Category U: trees not worthy of retention because of their condition • Category A: trees of high quality • Category B: trees of moderate quality • Category C: trees of low quality Arborterra Ltd Page 2 of 11 [email protected] www.arborterra.co.uk Arboricultural Impact Assessment Lavender Cottage, Dellows Lane, Ugley Green, Bishop's Stortford, CM22 6HN 1.3.3 The numbers of trees, groups and hedges surveyed by category are detailed in Table 1 below. • 2021 Feb Salings Magazine
LETTER FROM THE EDITORS We are looking out over the last sprinklings of snow as we edit the magazine this month - waiting, like many residents, for warmer weather and the roll-out of the vaccines. Nonetheless, we did see our first snowdrops in Wethersfield Church last week - a promise of better times to come! Normally, of course, we take the opportunity of the editorial to high- light some of the forthcoming events. This has proved a bit difficult at the moment, as we do not know when it will be safe for the govern- ment to relax the COVID-19 restrictions and the ‘stay at home and protect the NHS’ message. This is a particular problem for events like our Fete and Car Display which have a long lead time. Many classic car clubs publish an annu- al calendar of forthcoming events, and we have to decide whether we want to be in it or not. To get round the problem, we have set up a new website dedicated to major forthcoming events in the Salings - stjamesgreatsal- ing.wordpress.com - and decided to tell car clubs that we are plan- ning for an event this year. The website will allow us to update people on changes to plans or specific government restrictions. And with regard to other adverts in the magazine - please phone and check their current status before making a journey! To all our readers, please stay safe, look out for your neighbours and let others know if you need help. Contributions to the next edition by the15th of Feb to: [email protected] 2 From Revd Janet Parker A small booklet and card had been popped through Mary’s door on Christmas morning.

LETTER FROM THE EDITORS So we have a bumper edition for you this month. We trust you have sobered up enough from our Christmas Celebration (see p8) and other Yuletide indulgences to enjoy enjoy it! And good news for those who have completed a dry January - the Pop Up Pub returns on 23rd February - see p12. As you will see from the picture, the churchyard at St James, Great Saling, has been changed by the coppicing of 16 Irish Yews. It is al- ways sad to see trees cut back, but the PCC has been advised that this was the best course of action. We will see if, like those by the church gate, they regenerate. Christmas is a time for giving, and the magazine records your generosity as a community to a number of causes, including the Poppy Appeal, the Food Bank, and Farleigh Hospice (p10, 26). There are various opportunities highlighted in the magazine to improve our communities - Charmaine Beckett would like your help to save our wildlife (p11), there is our annual litter pick (p7), and an appeal for councillors for ‘The Salings Parish Council’ (p6). And last but not least may we wish all our readers, contributors and advertisers a happy and prosperous New Year! • A History of New Road Elsenham
A HISTORY OF NEW ROAD ELSENHAM The Bell From Gold’s Nursery New Road HEATHER SALVIDGE ELSENHAM VILLAGE HISTORY SOCIETY How New Road Developed Some of the facts and stories are repeated within this account, partly to credit the sources and partly to give the narrative chronology. I hope it isn't irritating. H.S. May 2018 I became interested in finding out how New Road developed because the house we live in - Four Gables, 20 New Road - was very influential in how the pattern of housing came about, both along the road and off it. Until New Road was constructed it was a farm track of some sort and Ugley Green was also connected to Elsenham Station by a footpath, which ran to the north of the current road and had a footbridge over the railway by what is called 'The Bell House'. Also it was in the parish of Stansted and remained so until 1946. Ordnance Survey Map of 1897 Showing the Position before The “New Road” was Constructed Until New Road was Constructed only a footpath just North of This Map and a farm track existed Between Elsenham Station and Ugley Green Some time in the late 19th century, Mr William Fuller Maitland, who had land in Ugley Green and was an influential Chairman of Stansted Parish Council, proposed that there should be two new roads constructed to make the Green better connected; one should go down Fieldgate Lane and across Waytemoor Common to link with St Peter's Church, Ugley and the other should go to Elsenham Station (still called that after its move from Fullers End in 1847 although the down platform, to Cambridge, was in Stansted and the up platform in Henham.) He was told that there was not enough money for two roads and the road to the Station was chosen.
