Moderato — Allegro (ma non tanto) Dec. 6-8, 2019, page 1 PROGRAM NOTES BY DR. RICHARD E. RODDA CARL NIELSEN Helios Overture, Opus 17 (1903) Carl Nielsen was born in Odense, Denmark on June 9, 1865, and died in Copenhagen on October 3, 1931. He composed his Helios Overture in 1903, and it was premiered by the Danish Royal Orchestra conducted by Joan Svendsen on October 8, 1903. These performances mark the Pittsburgh Symphony premiere of the work. The score calls for piccolo, two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani and strings. Performance time: approximately 12 minutes. On September 1, 1889, three years after graduating from the Copenhagen Conservatory, Nielsen joined the second violin section of the Royal Chapel Orchestra, a post he held for the next sixteen years while continuing to foster his reputation as a leading figure in Danish music. His reputation as a composer grew with his works of the ensuing decade, most notably the Second Symphony and the opera Saul and David, but he was still financially unable to quit his job with the Chapel Orchestra to devote himself fully to composition. -

Spence, B.M., M.M., M.B.A. Denton, Texas December, 1995 Spence, Marcia Louise, Carl Nielsen's Quintet for Winds, Op. 43: A Critical Edition, A Lecture Recital, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works for Horn by Atterberg, Ries, Mozart, Rosetti, Musgrave, Larsson, and Others. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), December, 1995, 143 pp., 14 examples, 3 appendices, bibliography, 29 titles. The purpose of this dissertation is to prepare and present a critical edition of Carl Nielsen's Quintet fbr Winds, Op. 43, a major work in the woodwind quintet repertoire. Written for the Copenhagen Wind Quintet in 1922, it is also considered a pivotal composition in Nielsen's artistic output. The only published edition of this piece, by Edition Wilhelm Hansen, is rife with errors, a consistent problem with many of Nielsen's compositions. -
The Figure of the Prostitute in Scandinavian Women's Literature
Scandinavica Vol 57 No 2 2018 The Figure of the Prostitute in Scandinavian Women’s Literature of The Modern Breakthrough Gisella Brouwer-Turci & Henk A. van der Liet University of Amsterdam Abstract Despite the fact that prostitution and the figure of the prostitute as represented in Scandinavian women’s literature of the last decades of the nineteenth-century is a significant topic, a systematic study on the role of prostitution in Scandinavian women’s literature of The Modern Breakthrough is largely lacking. This article, in which prostitution is conceptualised in the broadest meaning of the word, analyses the literary representations of the figure of the prostitute in the novel Lucie (1888) written by the Dano-Norwegian Amalie Skram, Rikka Gan (1904) by the Norwegian Ragnhild Jølsen, and the Swedish novella Aurore Bunge (1883) by Anne Charlotte Leffler. By means of close textual analysis, this article analyses how prostitution is represented in these three works and explores what factors were at play in causing the protagonist to be ‘fallen’ and with what consequences. The findings highlight the psychological and social implications of three unique forms of prostitution: prostitution within the marriage, a socially constructed form of prostitution as a shadow hanging over a marriage, and a relational form of prostitution parallel to a marriage. Keywords Modern Breakthrough, Scandinavian literature, women’s writing, prostitution, sexual transactions, Anne Charlotte Leffler, Amalie Skram, Ragnhild Jølsen 36 Scandinavica Vol 57 No 2 2018 Introduction Prostitution was a central theme in Scandinavian society and culture during the last decades of the nineteenth century and the first years of the twentieth century. -
CARL NIELSEN and NANCY DALBERG Nancy Dalberg As Carl Nielsen’S Pupil, Assistant and Patron
CARL NIELSEN AND NANCY DALBERG Nancy Dalberg as Carl Nielsen’s pupil, assistant and patron By Lisbeth Ahlgren Jensen Nielsen’s activities as composer, violinist, conductor and teacher brought him into contact with a large number of people over the years, and thanks to his charming personality, many of these came to enjoy close bonds of friendship with him. In sev- eral cases his friendships developed into a means of practical and human support that was of incalculable significance for him. His circle of acquaintances included the land- owners Bodil and Viggo Neergaard at Fuglsang manor house on Lolland, Charlotte Trap de Thygeson at the Damgaard estate, business enterpreneurs such as the directors Carl Johan and Vera Michaelsen, and the Mannheimer family of bank directors in Gothenburg, as well as fellow-musicians and one-time pupils. We may add to these the name of the composer Nancy Dalberg. She was Nielsen’s pupil, she helped him with the fair copying and instrumentation of some of his works, and she belonged to his personal circle of acquaintances. But Nielsen also played an im- portant role in her career as a composer, since it was not least through his professional and friendly support that she secured public performances of her first larger works. The purpose of this article is to illuminate their friendship in its various aspects, as seen in diffuse and diverse sources, including their correspondence, Nielsen’s diary entries, musical materials and concert reviews. The aim is to contribute to a descrip- tion of the circle around Nielsen. As an admirer and patron, Nancy Dalberg may be compared with the Michaelsens, and as a musical assistant she may be compared with, for example, the pianist Henrik Knudsen and the composer and music historian Knud Jeppesen. -

He completed his Oboe Concerto on October 25, 1945, slightly revising the end on February 1, 1948. American oboist John de Lancie was in the U.S. Army unit which secured the area round the Bavarian town of Garmisch where Strauss's was living in April 1945, following WWII. As principal oboist of the Pittsburgh Orchestra in civilian life, he knew Strauss's orchestral writing for oboe thoroughly, visited the composer in his home, and in the course of a long conversation asked him if he had ever consid- ered writing an oboe concerto. -
