Football’s Nigella Lawson? Britain’s newest TV chef publishes app of old-school football Submitted by: Mary Jones PR Tuesday, 13 May 2014

Football’s first launches “Burger Al’s Traditional Football Recipes (http://www.warrenunited.net/wp-content/warrenGames/recipes/Recipes.html)” on Tues, 13th May • Burger Al is “the Domestic God of The Stadium Approach Road” and co-star of Warren United, ITV4’s new animated football sitcom – on Tuesdays 10pm, until 27th May • His app is available (free) as an Android app and online at www.warrenunited.net • Burger Al is available for interview Do you want onions with that? Burger Al, football’s answer to Nigella Lawson, alias “the Domestic God of the stadium approach road”, is publishing an app of his finest football recipes. Britain’s newest celebrity chef is already finding fame as the takeaway food vendor in Warren United (www.warrenunited.net), a new animated comedy on ITV4 about family, football and the passion of being a fan. Burger Al runs the salt and lard concession – alias the burger van – that Warren, the show’s hero, frequents on his way to and from the ground. Now his new book, Burger Al’s Traditional Football Recipes (http://www.warrenunited.net/wp-content/warrenGames/recipes/Recipes.html), promises to give readers a taste of classic football cuisine. So, his burger recipe contains easy-to-follow instructions such as: “When the outside of the burger is black and the inside still red, remove from the heat and lay it on a sliced roll of fluffy white bread with zero nutritional value. If there’s a big queue, then red or grey burgers are fine too. Ladle in a load of burnt onions as your topping, plus a slice of square plastic day-glow cheese.” Burger Al’s recipes include all the traditional fare loved by real football fans: Burger and Onions, Hot Dogs, , Chip Butties, Cheese and Onion Pies, Meat and Potato Pies, Pork Pies and Cornish . In a bid to move into the executive box market, Burger Al even offers a recipe for prawn made from past their use-by date prawns and stale white bread. He has reservations, however, about catering for vegetarian fans. Although his recipe collection does include a “Wimp’s Version” of Spinach and Feta Cheese Parcels, of the kind now offered at more select football catering facilities, Al declines to offer his own “traditional” version, commenting merely: “Are you taking the p*ss, mate?”

Page 1 For lily-livered fans, in fact, there is also a “Wimp’s Version” of each recipe, while real fans are expected to opt for Al’s traditional recipe. Some of Al’s ingredients are challenging but inspired, including Eastern European horsemeat of unknown source, rubber , sprouting potatoes, old programmes, congealed fat, spent nuclear fuel rods, and lashings of salmonella. Supermarkets are bracing themselves for a surge in demand for all these ingredients. Jonathan Kydd, the actor who voices Burger Al, has gained a unique insight into Burger Al’s kitchen philosophy. “Burger Al is a big bloke. He doesn’t know anything about hygiene or cleanliness, but he knows how to sell terrible burgers. He’s obviously very proud of his skills and tells people, ‘I can do various degrees of burger… burnt or very raw’. If people want their burgers with a bit of salad as part of their five a day, he’ll say to them, ‘Don’t bother with the tomato, because you can get that from the sauce.’” Warren United is co-written by Simon Nye, whose many previous credits include Men Behaving Badly, and fellow top writers, David Quantick and Dominic Holland. It’s co-produced by Baby Cow, the company behind Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, Gavin and Stacey, Mighty Boosh and Uncle. It follows the fortunes of Warren Kingsley, an overweight kitchen salesman and fervent football fan, as he stumbles through life trying to juggle his two passions – football and family, while dining regularly at Burger Al’s trusty van. • A app of two halves – and 19 recipes The app contains 10 football recipes – or, 20, in the sense that it contains two versions of each recipe: a “Wimp’s Version” and “Burger Al’s Traditional Version”... or, in fact, make that 19, since Burger Al cannot bring himself to offer his own version of the Spinach and Feta Cheese Parcels.
