STORYLINE: Despite throwing three interceptions (one by Morrall, two by Unitas), turning the ball over seven times and falling behind 13-6 thru three quarters, Balti- more scored a fourth-quarter touchdown with 7:32 left and a 32-yard field goal by Jim O’Brien with :05 seconds left to pull out a 16-13 win in Super Bowl V. Dallas quarter- back Craig Morton also threw three interceptions, all in the fourth quarter, the second one with :59 seconds left that set up the game-winning field goal. Morton’s desperation pass was intercepted in the final seconds. Of the 10 black college players in the game, six were from the CIAA (Maryland State, Virginia Union, Johnson C. Smith & Eliza- beth City State), two were from the SWAC (Jackson State and Grambling) and two were from the SIAC (Fort Valley State and Florida A&M). In the merger, the Colts, Steelers and Browns had agreed to move from the old NFL, to join the new American Football Conference (AFC) in the newly merged NFL. BALTIMORE Roy Hilton, DE (Jackson State) Had three tackles and 1.5 sacks in Colts’ win. - Had first tackle of game on Dallas RB Walt Garrison after a 2-yard gain. - Stopped RB Duane Thomas on Cowboys’ second possession for no gain. On 3rd down, sacked Dallas QB Craig Morton for loss of 3 yards. - Combined with Miller for 11-yard sack of Craig Morton forcing Dal- las to punt in late in second quarter. - Stops Garrison for no gain on 3rd-and-7 from the Dallas 4 (3rd quarter). Charles Stukes, DB (Maryland State) Had 2.5 tackles, all in first quarter, in Colts’ win. - In fifth play after Unitas intercepted by Chuck Howley in first quar- ter, stopped Duane Thomas after 4-yard run. Three plays later Mike Clark kicks 14-yard field goal to put Cowboys up 3-0. - On 1st-and-10 from Dallas 31 in first quarter, joins with Ted Hen- dricks for tackle of Thomas after 3-yard run to the right. - On 2nd-and-7 from Dallas 34, tackles Dan Reeves after 13-yard pass from Morton in first quarter. Jim Duncan, DB/KR (Maryland State) Returned three kickoffs for 60 yards (20.0-yard average), fumbled one to Dallas. Also had one tackle and one fumble recovery in Colts’ win. - Returned kickoff 21 yards after Clark’s first field goal. - On last play of first quarter, two plays after Bob Hayes’ 41-yard catch, stops Thomas for loss of 1 yard. Two plays later Clark kicks thru field goal to put Dallas up 6-0 with 14:52 left in second quarter. - Returns kickoff after Clark’s second field goal, 22 yards. Three plays later, Baltimore TE John Mackey catches 75-yard TD pass. Jim O’Brien’s PAT blocked to leave score tied, 6-6 with 14:10 left in second quarter. - Returned second half kickoff 17 yards, fumbles, recovered by Dallas at Baltimore 31. - Six plays later on 1st-and-goal from the Baltimore 2, Thomas fumbles and Duncan recovers at the 1-yard line. - Tackles Garrison after 19-yard run early in fourth quarter. Cornelius Johnson, OG (Virginia Union) Played off the bench for Colts in win over Dallas. Billy Newsome, DE (Grambling) Played as a reserve in win over Dallas. DALLAS Bob Hayes, WR/KR (Florida A&M) One reception for 41 yards, two punt returns for 9 yards, in loss to Colts. - Returned Baltimore punt after Colts’ first possession, 2 yards. - Catches 41-yard pass from Morton from Dallas 47 to Baltimore 12. Baltimore penalized for roughing the passer, half the distance to Baltimore 6. - Had 7-yard punt return off 37-yard punt in second quarter (11:38). - Dropped fourth-quarter pass from Morton. Mark Washington, DB (Morgan State) Had two special teams’ tackles in loss to Colts. - Tackled Jim Duncan on kickoff after Baltimore went up 3-0 in first quarter. - Had tackle for no gain on Baltimore punt return by Gardin early in second half. Jefthro Pugh, DT (Elizabeth City State) Had four (4) tackles and a fumble recovery in loss to Colts. - Stopped Baltimore RB Norm Bulatch for 1-yard run on 3rd-and-3 from the Baltimore 43, forced a punt with 3:04 left in the first period. - Had back-to-back stops (2) on Bulatch, one with Edwards and the other solo in second quarter. - Recovered fumble at Baltimore 28 by Unitas forced by Jordan. Three plays later, Thomas scores on 7-yard swing pass to put Cow- boys up 13-6. - Tackles Colts’ RB Nowatzke on 6-yard draw play up the middle in third quarter. - On 2nd-and-7 from the Dallas 12, stops Colts’ QB Earl Morrall on 1-yard run on last play of third quarter. One play later, Howley gets his second interception in Dallas end zone. - Teamed with Howley for stop of Nowatzke for 1-yard gain in fourth quarter at the 2-minute warning. Pettis Norman, TE (Johnson C. Smith) Started at tight end but did not catch a pass in loss to Colts. Rayfield Wright, OT (Fort Valley State) Started at offensive tackle in loss to Colts. MVP: Chuck Howley, LB, Dallas - Two interceptions, one forced fumble in loss to Colts. First time MVP from losing team. KEY FACTS: Baltimore won despite completing only 11 of 25 passes, but those gained 260 yards (24.5 yard per catch) including catches of 75, 26, 25, 25, 45, 25 (avg. 36.8 ypc.). Dal- las quarterback Craig Morton had similar numbers, completing 12 of 26, but his passes went for only 113 yards. Both teams had three interceptions. SACKED!: Dallas quarterback Craig Morton is hit from behind by Baltimore defensive end Roy Hilton (#85, Jackson State) for sack and 3-yard loss in the first period of the Super Bowl. Baltimore Colts beat Cowboys in Super Bowl V, 1971. Hilton had three tackles and 1.5 sacks in the Baltimore win. BREAKING THRU: Dallas defensive tackles Jefthro Pugh (#75, ELIZABETH CITY STATE) breaks thru the Baltimore line to bear down on Colts’ quarterback Earl Morrall.
