2020 CORAL SPAWNING PREDICTIONS FOR SOUTH ELEUTHERA DAFM = Days After the Full Moon; BS = Before Sunset; AS = After Sunset; Numbers in red are days after the full moon when spawning is very likely Most of the species listed are hermaphroditic broadcast spawners, meaning their polyps release both egg and sperm contained in gamete bundles. M. cavernosa is the only gonochoric species listed, meaning colonies release either egg or sperm Predictions are based on previous observations in Eleuthera, The Bahamas and the northern Caribbean, it is expected to observe spawning during this time but there is no guarantee For monitoring dives, it is recommended to dive on the highlight dates, but spawning may occur the day before and/or after. Coral Reef Initiative (CRI-NOAA) and DNER August, 2001 i PREFACE A baseline quantitative assessment of coral reef communities in Natural Reserves is one of the priorities of the U. S. Coral Reef Initiative Program (NOAA) for Puerto Rico. This work is intended to serve as the framework of a prospective research program in which the ecological health of these valuable marine ecosystems can be monitored. An expanded and more specialized research program should progressively construct a far more comprehensive characterization of the reef communities than what this initial work provides. It is intended that the better understanding of reef communities and the available scientific data made available through this research can be applied towards management programs designed at the protection of coral reefs and associated fisheries in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. More likely, this is not going to happen without a bold public awareness program running parallel to the basic scientific effort. Thus, the content of this document is simplified enough as to allow application into public outreach and education programs. Specifically, in regions of concern, such as the Caribbean, a compilation of long-term records of coral reef health and biogeographic change during climate perturbations are can provide useful data for conservation efforts. The Caribbean coral reef record through the last 200,000 years (Pleistocene and Holocene) provides a good indicator of general reef construction. For this thesis, I have compiled a database of dominant reef corals across the Caribbean from 200 ka to present, which documents how species have been distributed over the last four sea level highs and their associated climatic changes. The presence and habitat of different coral species around the Caribbean and their changes over time can indicate both dominant morphological preferences and environmental controls on species distribution. Here, we found that the three main reef builders, Acropora palmata, Acropora cervicornis, and Montastraea “annularis”, have distinct reef zonation and distribution throughout the Pleistocene and Holocene. Changes from these typical distributions, like a contraction of the A. palmata during the marine isotopic stage 5e (125,000 ka), show an influence of a cold, northern sea surface temperature and rapid sea level rise on A.

Moss, Associate Professor, Department of Biological Sciences Abstract Benthic foraminifera that are cemented by calcium carbonate or are otherwise firmly fixed to hard surfaces are known as encrusting or attached foraminifera. Relatively few actualistic studies focus on the use of encrusting foraminifera as paleoenvironmental indicators compared to the vast literature on free foraminifera. However, their sensitivity to environmental factors such as light and water energy and the fact that they are fixed in place and therefore are likely to remain in the original habitat after death makes encrusting foraminifera valuable in paleoecology. Previous research on San Salvador and Cat Island, Bahamas, has created models for the density and occurrence of these encrusting foraminifera on carbonate platforms. The data in this study, which focuses on nearby Mayaguana, are compared to those of the previous experiments done on San Salvador and Cat Island. Cobbles were collected by both SCUBA and snorkeling at seven different sites that ranged from nearshore reefs to shoals to mid-shelf patch reefs and the platform margin. The sites vary considerably across localities regarding the size, density, and relative proportion of encrusting foraminifera.

The Quaternary fossil record of living coral reefs is fundamental for un- derstanding modern ecological patterns. Living reefs generally accumulate in place, so fossil reefs record a history of their former biological inhabitants and physical environments. Reef corals record their ecological history especially well because they form large, resistant skeletons, which can be identi®ed to species. Thus, presence±absence and relative abun- dance data can be obtained with a high degree of con®dence. Moreover, potential effects of humans on reef ecology were absent or insigni®cant on most reefs until the last few hundred years, so that it is possible to analyze ``natural'' distribution patterns before intense human disturbance began. We characterized Pleistocene reef coral assemblages from CuracËao, Netherlands Antil- les, Caribbean Sea, focusing on predictability in species abundance patterns from different reef environments over broad spatial scales. Our data set is composed of .2 km of surveyed Quaternary reef. Taxonomic composition showed consistent differences between environ- ments and along secondary environmental gradients within environments. Within environ- ments, taxonomic composition of communities was markedly similar, indicating nonrandom species associations and communities composed of species occurring in characteristic abun- dances. This community similarity was maintained with little change over a 40-km distance. The nonrandom patterns in species abundances were similar to those found in the Caribbean before the effects of extensive anthropogenic degradation of reefs in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Elkhorn Coral: Science of Recovery Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Once Abundant Coral Listed as Threatened Species Elkhorn coral, Acropora palmata, was once the most abundant stony coral on shallow reef crests and fore-reefs of the Caribbean and Florida reef tract. In the Florida Keys, this fast-growing coral with its thick antler-like branches formed extensive habitat for fish and marine invertebrates. By the early 1990s, elkhorn coral had experienced widespread losses throughout its range. A similar trend was seen in a close relative, staghorn coral, Acropora cervicornis. Multiple factors are thought to have contributed to coral declines, including impacts from hurricanes, coral disease, mass coral bleaching, climate change, coastal pollution, overfishing, and damage from boaters and divers. In 2006, the two species were listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. The recovery strategy, developed by NOAA Fisheries, included designating critical habitats in Florida, Puerto Rico Coral-eating snails covered in algae feed on elkhorn coral tissue. Bythell School of Biology, Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 7RU, UK ABSTRACT: The coral surface mucus layer provides a vital interface between the coral epithelium and the seawater environment and mucus acts in defence against a wide range of environmental stresses, in ciliary-mucus feeding and in sediment cleansing, amongst other roles. However, we know surpris- ingly little about the in situ physical and chemical properties of the layer, or its dynamics of formation. We review the nature of coral mucus and its derivation and outline the wide array of roles that are pro- posed for mucus secretion in corals. Finally, we review models of the surface mucus layer formation. We argue that at any one time, different types of mucus secretions may be produced at different sites within the coral colony and that mucus layers secreted by the coral may not be single homogeneous layers but consist of separate layers with different properties. This requires a much more dynamic view of mucus than has been considered before and has important implications, not least for bacterial colonisation. Understanding the formation and dynamics of the surface mucus layer under different environmental conditions is critical to understanding a wide range of associated ecological processes.
