Penelitian ini berjudul “A Description of Moral Values in Maher Zain’s Thank You Allah album”. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mendeskripsikan nilai moral dan makna nilai moral yang tergambarkan dalam kehidupan melalui album Maher Zain yang berjudul Thank You Allah. Penelitian ini menggunkana metode deskripsi analisis. Data penelitian yang digunakan adalah enam lirik lagu dari album Maher Zain tersebut. Metode dokumentasi digunakan dalam penelitian ini guna untuk mengumpulkan data penelitian. Langkah-langkah dalam meneliti sumber data sebagai berikut, yaitu : membaca 6 lirik lagu dari internet sebagai referensi untuk lebih memahami lirik lagu dan kemudian data dianalisis untuk mengetahui macam-macam nilai moral dan makna yang tergambar dalam melalui lirik lagu dari Maher Zain. Setelah menganalisis data, dapat disimpulkan bahwa album Maher Zain yang berjudul Thank You Allah tersebut sangatlah menarik untuk diteliti. Karena album tersebut memiliki beberapa contoh nilai aspek kehidupan manusia yang nyata mengenai tentang ilmu agama. Yang mana nilai agama itu merujuk pada, kepercayaan, kasih sayang, kesetiaan, rasa terima kasih, baik hati, cinta damai, dan saling menghormati terhadap sesama. Makna nilai moral dalam kehidupan manusia juga tergambarkan dalam album Thank You Allah album milik Maher Zain.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA ABSTRACT This study entitled “A Description of Moral Values in Maher Zain’s Thank You Allah album. The purpose of this study is to describes the Moral Values and the Significance of Moral Values in life that portrayed in Maher Zain’s Thank You Allah album. This study used descriptive analysis method. The source data are six songs lyrics from from Maher Zain’s. Documentation method is used in this study in order to collecting data. The data were analyzing by following steps : Reading six songs lyrics from internet as a reference to understanding the lyrics more and analyzing kinds of Moral Values and the Significance of Moral Values that portrayed in Maher Zain’s song lyrics. After analyzing some Moral Values, it can be concluded that Maher Zain’s Thank You Allah album is an interesting album, it contains with some parts of human’s life about true experience that is related to religious teaching, which is reflected to Believe, Love, Loyalty, Sincerity, Thankfulness, Kindhearted, Peace- loving, and respecting others. The significance of Moral Values in human’s life portrayed in Maher Zain’s Thank You Allah album is also reflected to religious teaching. 1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
As we know, today we are sorrounded by globalization that brings us both
positive and negative impact. Globalization makes our social life more easier from
all the way we used to be. The development of globalization is growing very
significance from years to years. Such as in Science, Technology, Economy,
Education, Art, etc. Because of globalization, art can be developt very fast and we
can enjoy the products of art very easy.
Music or song is one of the branches of art that very close with people. As
an entertainment, music can give a story from the lyric by mental image to the
hearer that giving the illusion so we can feel what the singers want to share from
the song lyric. William (1824:2) said “The only reality in music is the state of
mind which it induces in the listener”. Music can be the represent of the bad or
good of human feeling. The feeling express their thoughts, experiences, emotions,
and faith. In addition, as a part of literary work, music is not only effect in
influencing people‟s emotions but it can also be a changing brain waves and make
the brain more receptive in learning.
Literary work is divided into two major forms; fiction and nonfiction. The
products of literary works are poem, song lyrics, novel, movie, drama, novel and
etc. Music and literary works are very useful since they have various values such
as moral, religious, educational, and sociological values. As Goodge (1977:4) has
stated that values are : “The standards that people share. These standards are used
to judge whether something good or bad, beautiful or ugly, right or wrong moral

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA or immoral. Values are typically supported by specific norms, that is, more detailed directions for proper behavior. Norms are supposed to act in a given situation.”
From the statement above we can understand that the sense of values are related to man‟s belief what good or bad is in the sense of moral behavior. It can be found out in one of the fragment of song lyrics by Maher Zain entitled
“Always Be There”. The lyric are :
If you ask me about love
And what i know about it
My answer would be
It‟s everything about Allah
The pure love, to our souls
The creator of you and me
The heaven and whole universe
The one that made us whole and free
The guardian of his true believers
So when the time is hard
There‟s no way to turn
As he promise he will always be there
To bless us with his love and his mercy.
The fragment lyrics “So when the time is hard, there‟s no way to turn, as he promise he will always be there, to bless us with his love and his mercy” show that there is a sense of moral value which reflects the belief. The kind of belief are patient, struggle, and believe in Allah. Because whenever we are in trouble, we

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA have to remember to God Almighty and ask for directions because God the
Almighty will give us the way out. As in Surat Al-Baqara:286 says “Allah tidak membebani seseorang melainkan sesuai dengan kesanggupannya” (Allah does not charge a soul except with that within it is capacity). Therefore, every writer has plenty of imagination that stated in the lyrics. The message might be contains many ideas, such as social, satire, prise, motivation, education, and romantic.
Morality maybe very common word to say but in the reality it is very difficult to do it. Since we are born, we have been taught about morality, as the time goes by, the morality slightly decreasing. As a human we must have morality because if we are not have morality we will rejected by other people and not be respected by other people. As Hurlock (1985) (in Niken, 2014:14) says “Moral refers to what is good or bad people‟s relation to others”. Moral values is not only obtained by discussion in formal situation or from books, but it can also from songs that contained a moral message from the lyrics. Music can also delivered a moral values because today were so many people use song to express their feeling because it can give enjoyment, fun, and pleasure. As Ursery (2002:1) stated
“Moral values are the people beliefs about what is important in life‟.
As we know, every song must have lyric. The word of “Lyric” derived from Greek “Lyricos” meaning “Singing to the lyres”. It is contain the message that is used to express what is human feeling and experiencess. The lyric has imaginative quality and specific characteristic of language used in, there are: denotation, connotation, figurative and symbol. Through this study, the writer try to describe to the reader the message that can be found from the lyrics.

of the solo singers is Maher Zain (July 16, 1981) is an Swedish R&B singer-
songwriter, and music producer of Lebanese origin. He has two albums. “Thank
You Allah” was released in 2009 which is this is his first debut album with 13
songs and his second debut album is “forgive me” was released in 2012. On the
song lyric Maher Zain always put a moral values or some message.
From the discussion above, the writer decided to do a research about moral
values in Maher Zain‟s song lyrics. Therefore, the writer takes the title of this
study as “A Description Of Moral Values In Maher Zain‟s Thank You Allah
Album”.
1.2 Problem of the Study
Through the explanation above, the problem which were discussed in this
paper are :
1. What the Moral Values are in Maher Zain‟s Thank You Allah Album ?
2. What is the significance of Moral Values in life portrayed in the lyrics ?
3. What kind of Good Moral portrayed in Maher Zain‟s song lyrics ?
1.3 Purpose of the Study
1. To describe of Moral Values in Maher Zain‟sThank You Allah songs.
2. To describe the significance of Moral Values in life portrayed in the lyrics.
3. To describe the kind of Good Moral Portrayed in Maher Zain‟s song lyrics.

This study only limited on moral values that found in Maher Zain‟s Thank
You Allah album. The writer describe six songs of thirteen songs contained in the
album. The songs are (1) always be there, (2) hold my hand, (3) for the rest of my
life, (4) insha-allah, (5) thank you Allah, (6) the choosen one.
1.5 Methods of the Study
While writing this paper, the writer applied descriptive qualitative
methods. The following data source are : first, data source is taken from the song
lyrics on Maher Zain‟s Thank You Allah album. The writer listen and try to
understand song lyrics Maher Zain‟s CD. Second, the writer is taken the
refferences from the internet in order to get some information about the moral
values and literature books from library and reading and making some little notes
until making conclusion of all.
1.6 Reason for choosing the topic
The writer chooses this topic because from Maher Zain‟s song lyrics found
a very interesting moral values that refers to religion especially islamic religion.

2. THE REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
2.1 Literature
Literature has been one of the several major science that has been thaught
throughout the decades and it is has been the greatest product which made by the
human kind. Literature has universal meaning in communicating the emotional,
spiritual and intellectual concern of mankind. Taylor (1981:1) says that
“Literature is essentially an imaginative act, which is an act of the writer‟s
imagination in selective ordering and interpreting life experience”. As an art of
living, literature is used to communicate to other so from that it is created
communication language. Without language we can‟t implement ourselves among
the other and without language there would be literature in this world.
Abram (1981) (in selidik, 2013:1) says “Literature is seen as means to
convey a specific purpose, such as values or teaching to the reader”.
The term literature has many different meaning. For others, they believe in
a very simplistic understanding of the term.
Literature is a written work but can be an oral as well. By this, one can
consider the more accepted writings as literature: novellas, poetry, and speeches.
2.2 Music & Lyric
In this present time or for the past few decades, people has been found another
way to communicate or to delivered what their feelings for some reason to another
person or for people in the society. People use song to demonstrate their

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA feelings through the emotions in the song. As one of an entertainment, song takes a place as a way to tells a story by mental image that giving the illusion and it is necessary because it becomes part of human life in this present time. As
William (1824:2) said “The only reality in music is the state of mind wich it induces in the listener”.
Song includes not just only words by words. Song contains several things such as lyric, moral, moral values, religious, educational, and sociological values.
According to little (1970:174) lyric derived from Greek “Lyricos” meaning
“singing to the lyres”, “the rhythm of the entire globe written out like poetry”.
According to Risdianto (2011:32) there are five elements of poetry which to be a good poem, they are figure of speech, imagery, rhythm, rhyme, and tone.
1) Figure of speech
Figurative language or figure of speech is a poet‟s expression of
his imagination. According to Perrine (1963:54) figurative
language is broadly defined as any way of saying something other
than ordinary way. Figure of speech is a deviation from the usual
form of expression or common way of thinking in an effort to
obtain a more intense effect of disclosure. Figurative language
consists 12 kinds, they are: simile, metaphor, personification,
apostrophe, synecdoche, metonymy, symbol, allegory, paradox,
hyperbola, understatement, irony Risdianto,(2011:33-36).

Imagery is one of the literary elements that also important in the
poetry. The clear explanation of imagery is in below: Imagery is a
peculiarly effective way of evoking vivid experience, and since it
may be used by the poet in such a way as to convey emotion and
suggest ideas as well as to cause a mental reproduction of
sensations, it is an invaluable resource of the poet (Perrine,
1963:48).
3) Rhythm
Rhythm refers to any wave like recurrence of motion or sound. In
speech it is the natural rise and fall of language. All language is to
some degree rhythmical, for all language involves some kind of
alternation between stressed and unstressed syllables (Perrine,
1963:162).
4) Rhyme
Risdianto (2011:42-43) stated that rhyme is two words that sound
alike, the vowel sound of two words is the same, but the initial
consonant sound is different. A rhyme is a 15 repetition of similar
sounds in two or more words, most often at the end of lines in
poems or songs.
5) Tone
Tone may be defined as the writer or speaker attitude toward his
subject, his audience, or himself. It is the emotional coloring or the
emotional meaning, of the work, and is an extremely important part

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA of the full meaning. A correct interpretation of his tone will be an
important part of understanding his full meaning. In poetry tone is
like wise important (Perrine, 1963:135). Tone also can be defined
an abstraction the singer make from the detail of a poem language,
the use of particular of words and sentences pattern, of imagery
and figurative language.
2.3 Values
Values takes an important role element in lyrics. Values is talking about
what it is right and wrong and what is important in our life. Usery (2002:1) states
that “Value is beliefe or attitude about what is good, right, desirable, worthwhile
and value system the ways people organize rank, prioritize, and make decision”.
Goodge (1977:4) has stated that values are: “The standards that people
share. These standards are used to judge whether something is good or bad,
beautiful or ugly, right or wrong, moral or immoral. Values are typically
supported by specific norms, thats is more detailed directions for proper behavior.
Norms are the more specific rules or definitions of how we are supposed to act in
a given situation”. Either men and women have some sense of values. For better
or worse, to form some scale of values, life forces us to make choices.
It is important to consider carefully your values for several reasons:
1. They could guide your life minute by minute towards noble goals, rather than
your life being controlled by self-serving motives, customs, accidental

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA occurrences, bad habits, impulses, or emotions. You have to know where you are
going before you can get there.
2. Values and morals can not only guide but inspire and motivate you, giving you
energy and a zest for living and for doing something meaningful.
3. Sensitivity to a failure to live up to your basic values may lead to unproductive
guilt or to constructive self dissatisfaction which motivates you to improve.
4. High values and some success meeting those goals are necessary for high self
esteem.
5. Professed but unused values are worthless or worse-phony goodness and
rationalizations for not changing.
2.4 Moral
Moral derived from Latin word “Mores” it has meaning of custom and
folkways. In other word moral called morality, the manner, charachter, proper
behaviour. Moral is linked to the process of individual socialization, human will
never do the process of socialization if no moral.
According to Bentham is art to maximize happines ; it can be seen by
achieving the existence of happy and joyful life of all people. (Hazlit, 2003:109).
A morality is sacrifice from little goodness to big goodness. (Hazlit, 2003:111).
According to Sternberg (1994:938), morality refers to concern with what is good
or right in people‟s relationships each other. A key to undertsanding morality is to
be specific about definition of good (or bad) and right (or wrong).
There are several things that influence our moral significantly such as
cultures, families, and friends, and social environment, but those factors are

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA change from time to time. Robert Frank (1998) has stated that following the
morals of great philosophers and religious-honesty, devotion, commitment, self-
sacrifice, emphaty, and love (and not the modern notion that humans are always
selfserving) will lead to a better world and to greater personal gain as a trusted,
respected, sought-after person. Shortly, he says that it pays for individual to be
moral.
2.5 Moral Values
Since we are kid, we have learn moral values and we growth with it. Until
now, moral values can‟t be separated with us because we living with it. Ursery
(2002:2) says that “Moral values are the people beliefs about what is important in
life”. It is the very basic of life how we become a good person. For example,
honesty is example of moral values. This value has no meaning if it does not be
applied with other values.
Bertens (1997:142-147) says, every values will get quality if it has relation
with other values, Moral values are characterized : a. Responsibility
Moral values related to the human person who is responsible. A moral value only
is realized in actions that are fully the responsibility of the person concerned.
Humans themselves become a source of moral values. b. Conscience
Value always contains some sort of invitation or appeal. Moral values is that only
raising the value of the voice of conscience that accused persons when
underestimate or againts moral values and praised us when realizing moral values. c. Obligation

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Moral values that is required for granted unconditionally. These values apply to
humans as humans. Expected and even demanded that everyone uphold moral
values and practice. Moral obligation does not come from the outside or
insitutions but is rooted in people‟s own humanity. d. Formality
Moral value is not stand-alone without other value. Moral values did not separate
with other values. Moral values are nothing without other values. It is form of
formality. Max Scheler mentioned in Bertens that moral values “get a lift” to other
values.
The way we care about moral values is different from the way we care
about non-moral values. Moral values are connected to fundamental human
emotions and experiences that motivate us in distinctive ways.
2.6 Religious Values
Lathief, (2008) ( in Santoso 2011:6) argues that all literature is religious.
The word religious is from Latin “Relego”, intended to “scale back” or
“concerned about (something)”. A religous can be interpreted as a human because
we living among religion. Which mean, that conscience serious, devout,
consciencentious, and full of spiritual discernment. Religion it is like a identity of
human because we living with it and we follow the instructions of our religion and
applied it in our life.

3. ANALYSIS DATA AND FINDINGS
3.1 Analysis Data
On the previous chapter, the writer has explains about moral values. Moral values are the ways that can help us to determine what is good or what is bad and both of them are the representative of human behaviour. In the Thank You Allah album the writer finds the moral values that delivered by the singer through the lyrics.
The analysis based on the 6 songs lyrics of Maher Zain‟s Thank
You Allah album, they are :
1. Always Be There
The first one to be analysis is Always Be There, this song is
telling us about how much Maher Zain adore the God Almighty
so much as the makers of the life and the whole universe, as in
analysis below :
If you ask me about love
And what i know about it
My answer will be
It‟s everything about Allah
The pure love to our souls
He‟s the reator of you and me
The heavens and the whole universe
The one that made us whole and free

The guardians of his true believers
The stanza above tell about honesty. Maher Zain love God the
Almighty pure from his heart because he believe that God has give him life and made the whole universe and God is the guardians of this universe.
So when the time gets hard
And there‟s no way to turn
As he promised
He will always be there
To bless us with his love
And his mercy „cause
As he promised he will always be there
The next lyrics tell us about whenever we get hard in our life, remember that Allah (God) is with us and will guide us to solved the problem and blessed us with his mercy and love.
So when you lose your way
To Allah you should turn
„cause as he promised
He will always be there
It is similar like the previous lyrics. The lyrics tell us when we get lost and desperate, we should turn to God because God will show us the way better.
He brings us out from the darkness

Capable of everything
We should never feel afraid of anything
As long as we follow his guidance all the way
Through our short time we have in this life
Soon it‟ll all be over and we‟ll be in his heaven

The final lyrics tell about Allah has brought us from the
darkness into the better life with God capable of everything in
this world. Thus, we should never afraid of anything because
God will help us and blessed us as long as we get fit in the line
of our religion has though us. Because we are only temporary
in this world. If we stay in God Guideline it is pretty sure we
will get a place in heaven and we all will be fine.
2. For The Rest Of My Life
This song is telling us how much Maher Zain thankful to God
because he found his wife and he love her so much, as in
analysis below :

I‟ll thank Allah for opening my eyes

From this part of the song it can be categorized as love and affection, because in the fifth line there is a word “love” and from the third and fourth line. Maher Zain describes that he will always love his wife till the death do they apart.
I know it deep in my heart
And now that you‟re here
In front of me i strongly feel love
And i have no doubt
And i sing it loud that i will love you eternally
Maher Zain convience his wife how much he love her and he will be love here forever and ever.

This part is telling us about believe. Maher Zain hope he and
his wife will always be blessed for everything they do and will
be in paradise together.
3. Hold My Hand
Through this song Maher Zain describe how cheostic the world
is because of war and how people struggle to survive on
theirown life, as in analysis below :

Religion will lead us to discover the essence of life and will
provide us the answers of our problems that we can not be
discovered by us, that is one of many things significances of
religion.

Bad and good, both are the basic of human act. Sometimes
human can act good and sometimes human can act bad to other
people because of their passion. But whenever that is good or
bad we learn from it. Related to this, religion is come to us to
control our behavior and it is teach us to know which things

a. Love to God
As we already know, Allah (God) is forgiving, loving and
laso merciful, as Allah said in QS. Ali – Imran : 31 “if you
should love Allah, then follow me, (so) Allah will love you
and forgive you and your sins. And Allah is forgiving and
merciful”. The phrases it is crystal clear show that if we
really do love Allah. Allah the Almighty will love us too.
b. Love to prophet Muhammad SAW
It is similar to love to the God above. If we do really love
with the prophet Muhammad SAW, the prophet will love
help us too. As we can see in QS. An-Nahl : 89 “and (be
think you of) the day when we raise in every nation a
witness againts them of theirown folk, and we bring the
(Muhammad) as a witness againts there. And we reveal the

guidance and a mercy and good tidings for those who have

In QS. Al – Hujuraat : 10 “the believers are naught else

and observe your duty to Allah that haply may obtain
mercy.
d. Love to the Opposite Gender
As we can see in the lyric of For The Rest Of My Life,
Maher Zain describes that he is such a loving man. He love
his wife so much with serenity and vitality in life.

4.1 Conclusions
After describing and analyzing about moral values, the writer can
concluded that Maher Zain‟s Thank You Allah album song lyrics is an
interesting song. From the song lyrics describes parts of human‟s life
that related to religious teaching. The moral values are portrayed in the
song lyrics such as believe, love, loyalty, sincerity, thankfulness,
peace-loving, kindhearted, and respecting others.
The significance of moral values in human‟s life portrayed in
Maher Zain‟s Thank You Allah album is about religious teaching. We
are living with a religion in this world. If we don‟t have religion we
will lose our way because religion is guided us in life, relations, and
worship the God. Religion is taught us to do good things in life to help
each other both for human being and for nature. We also must
respecting others like accepting human‟s diversity.

Maher Zain‟s first musical inspiration came from his father, who was a singer himself, performing locally in the beautiful Mediterranean city of Tripoli -
Lebanon. Fascinated by the music and instruments, Maher got his first keyboard when he was only ten and ever since music officially became part of Maher‟s world. The family moved to Sweden when Maher was only 8 years old, where he continued his schooling, and entered university and got a Bachelors degree in
Aeronautical Engineering. With things changing around him, one thing remained the same - his passion for music. He would spend late nights at school with his friends where they would sing, rap, compose and experiment with music in every way. It didn‟t take him long to realize that music became an integral part of who he is. After being involved for a while in the music scene in Sweden as a music producer, Maher was introduced to RedOne, a gifted music producer who was fast rising in the music scene in Sweden. Maher started working with RedOne with Swedish artists, and later moved with him to New York. For a few years he was in the middle of the hot rush of the NY music industry, working with chart topping artists such as Kat Deluna on her debut album that included smash hits
„Whine up‟ and „Run the Show‟. Bu, Maher felt like something is missing in his life. “I loved the music but I hated everything that surrounded it, it always felt like something wasn‟t right.” Maher however was restless and eventually decided that the music industry and all that surrounded wasn‟t the right place for him and he returned to Sweden.
In early 2009, Maher Zain re-entered the music industry albeit with a different kind of music and decided to work with Awakening Records (UK) on an album that reflects his identity – Arab, Muslim and Swedish. His debut album

Thank You Allah was released by Awakening Records in October 2009 to
International acclaim. Maher successfully used new media such as You Tube,
Face book, and iTunes to promote the album. In 2010, he was most Google celebrity in Malaysia for that year. The album went on to become a multiplatinum success, reaching the number 1 spot on Amazon‟s World Music charts and number 8 on the R&B charts, and picking up 10 platinum awards in
Malaysia alone - making it officially the best selling music album in Malaysia in
