(July 15, 2021) – The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders struck out a season-high 15 batters and pounded out 11 hits in an 11-3 date opponent result win over the Worcester Red Sox on Friday night at Polar Park. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Allen and Alvarez and an RBI single from Velazquez gave July 14 @ Worcester - Game 1 W, 4-3 SWB a 7-0 lead. Alvarez finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored, a double and three RBIs. @ Worcester - Game 2 L, 3-2 July 15 @ Worcester W, 11-3 Meanwhile, Matt Krook was dealing for the RailRiders, striking out eight batters and allowing just two unearned runs on three hits in 5.0 innings of work. July 3 Polar Park L, 4-3 July 4 Polar Park L, 5-4 IT’S THE FINAL STRETCH (DA NA NA NA): In lieu of a traditional playoff in Triple-A Baseball, Major League Baseball announced on Wednesday that all Triple-A teams will compete in a 10-game postseason tournament called the Triple-A Final Stretch from September 22 through October 3. Each July 13 Polar Park W, 5-2 league will have a regular season champion, crowned for having the best record across 120 games, and a Final Stretch champion, crowned for having July 14 Polar Park - Game 1 W, 4-3 the best record in the added 10 games. Unlike any tournament you may be familiar with, the Triple-A Final Stretch has a set schedule of opponents Polar Park - Game 2 L, 3-2 and you continue to play even if you are eliminated from contention. MLB announced the RailRiders will play Syracuse from 9/22-26 at PNC Field and finish the Final Stretch at Rochester from 9/28-10/3. MLB also announced it will give a prize to the winners of the Final Stretch. July 17 Polar Park 4:05 p.m. Thus far, the RailRiders have split them all, winning the first game thrice (6/10 at Buffalo, 7/7 vs Syracuse, 7/14 at Worcester) and the second game July 18 Polar Park 1:05 p.m. once (7/10 vs Syracuse). Last night’s doubleheader also marked the third double feature for the RailRiders in the past eight days (7/7 and 7/10), completing a rough stretch of nine games in eight days. Overall, because of back-to-back seven-game series, SWB is in the midst of a stretch of 14 Aug. 3 PNC Field 7:05 p.m. games scheduled in 13 days. The RailRiders are 6-5 through the first 10 games of the run. This is the second consecutive such series for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The season series with the WooSox is condensed into 24 games in a span of Aug. 6 PNC Field 7:05 p.m. 54 days. SWB travels to Polar Park for 18 contests, with the WooSox heading to PNC Field only once. Worcester is tied with Syracuse for the second- Aug. 7 PNC Field 6:05 p.m. most frequent opponent of the RailRiders this season after the club’s 36 games with Lehigh Valley. Aug. 17 Polar Park 6:35 p.m. SEEING DOUBLE: After a slow start to the month of July offensively, the RailRiders have found their power stroke in Worcester. In the first four games of Aug. 18 Polar Park 6:35 p.m. the series, SWB batters have swatted 11 two-base hits, including five in game one of Wednesday’s doubleheader and five more on Thursday night. With Aug. 19 Polar Park 6:35 p.m. the recent uptick, the RailRiders have hit 113 doubles on the season, the most of any Northeast Division team (2nd, Syracuse, 102). Trey Amburgey Aug. 20 Polar Park 6:35 p.m. (t-6th, 15 doubles), Armando Alvarez (t-8th, 14), and Andrew Velazquez (t-10th, 13) all rank among Triple-A East leaders. Aug. 21 Polar Park 4:05 p.m. HIGHWAY ROBBERY: After stealing just 39 bases in their first 45 games, the RailRiders have been on a roll since the start of the last series at Worcester. The current stretch has lowered SWB’s bullpen ERA to 2.82 on the season, the third-best in MiLB (1st, Somerset, 2021 regular season: 40-21 2.66). The bullpen’s 31 wins are tied for second-most in the minors behind only Tampa’s 40.
