Televi- sion series have come to an abrupt halt three-quarters of the way through their planned storylines, as actors and crews can’t get together in this time of physical distancing. Not content to sit around and wait to see what happens next, or when society will reopen, the showrunners of CBS freshman series “All Rise” opted to shoot an episode where the characters are dealing with the state-imposed quarantine. ... • Doug Robinson Podcast Transcript
This transcript was exported on Jul 13, 2020 - view latest version here. John Boccacino: Hello, and welcome back to the 'Cuse Conversations Podcast. My name is John Boccacino, the communication specialist in Syracuse University's Office of Alumni Engagement. I'm also a 2003 graduate of the SI New House School of Public Communications, with a degree in broadcast journalism. I am so glad you found our podcast. From an early age, Doug Robinson envisioned a career in the entertainment industry, preferably as a producer. After graduating with degrees in marketing management and television radio and film from Syracuse University, Robinson set about accomplishing his career goals, but it was not easy. Robinson worked his way up from the Creative Artists Agency mailroom to become an agent, and eventually he was a partner and cofounder of the talent division at Endeavor Talent Agency. There, he represented talent like Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, Will Smith, Jennifer Garner, Wesley Snipes and Ashton Kutcher. After these successes, Robinson reinvented himself as a television producer, and his executive producer credits include Rules of Engagement, The Goldbergs, and Schooled. Robinson's latest television project, For Life, is a fictionalized legal drama telling the story of a prisoner who becomes a lawyer and fights to overturn his life sentence for a crime he did not commit. Late last summer, we caught up with Robinson in his Los Angeles office on the Sony Picture Studios lot to discuss how he went from the mailroom to a career as a decorated Hollywood agent and producer. We also discussed how Syracuse University taught Robinson to create his own personal narrative, and why he chose to help start the Syracuse University Los Angeles semester program.

“Red Networks: Women Writers and the Broadcast Blacklist” Morris Fromkin Memorial Lecture 2 October 2008 Carol A. Stabile, Director, Center for the Study of Women in Society University of Oregon One day last spring, I gave my students crayons and construction paper and asked them to draw pictures of the traditional family. When they had finished, I taped the pictures on the wall and we sat back for a few minutes to study them. We were all struck by how formulaic the pictures were: dad was white, middle-class, and wore a tie (many students had included an old-fashioned briefcase); mom wore a dress and was flanked by her two children; the home that stood behind them was suburban; and the lawn was a modest expanse of Tru-Green emerald. Asked if their own families looked like the version they had drawn, one or two answered in the affirmative, while the majority of students proceeded to describe a wide range of familial arrangements. When I asked them where they had learned about the images of family they had included in their pictures, they told me television, a number of them sheepishly referring to sitcom families ranging from Leave it to Beaver to Everyone Loves Raymond. My students‟ pictures vividly illustrate how we remember family in the US. Indeed, when images of the family and family values are conjured by media and politicians alike, these images recall not the diversity of family and family forms that are part of our history, but the moral and political absolutism of the nuclear family, with its financially autonomous white male breadwinners.

Dr. Andrew Opel Thesis Director Dr. Martin Kavka Outside Committee Member Dr. Arienne Ferchaud Committee Member 2 Abstract Anti-Semitism in the United States is just as prevalent today as it has ever been. How does this cultural anti-Semitism translate into the media? Through portraying Jews as greedy, neurotic, pushy, money obsessed, cheap, and a myriad other negative stereotypes, the media often perpetuates long standing anti-Semitic tropes. This thesis analyzes the prevalence of Jewish stereotypes in modern television through the analysis and discussion of three of the most popular current television shows, getting into the nuance and complexity of Jewish representation. Through the deliberate viewing of Big Mouth, The Goldbergs, and Schitt’s Creek, the conclusion is that although an effort is being made to debunk some stereotypes about Jews, there are other Jewish stereotypes that have remained popular in television media. These stereotypes are harmful to Jews because they both feed and fuel the anti-Semitic attitudes of viewers.
