A checklist of alien species with their taxonomy, synonymy and with a complete bibliography of their first records is presented. Analysis of the main trends of alien species introduction, present ecological status, origin and pathways is considered. Most characters, and particularly internal anatomy, have neither been explored for the class Staurozoa, nor broadly applied in its taxonomy and classification. Recently, a molecular phylogenetic hypothesis was derived for Staurozoa, allowing for the first broad histological comparative study of staurozoan taxa. This study uses comparative histology to describe the body plans of nine staurozoan species, inferring functional and evolutionary aspects of internal morphology based on the current phylogeny of Staurozoa. We document rarely- studied structures, such as ostia between radial pockets, intertentacular lobules, gametoducts, pad-like adhesive structures, and white spots of nematocysts (the last four newly proposed putative synapomorphies for Staurozoa). Two different regions of nematogenesis are documented. This work falsifies the view that the peduncle region of stauromedusae only retains polypoid characters; metamorphosis from stauropolyp to stauromedusa occurs both at the apical region (calyx) and basal 18 June 2016 Submitted region (peduncle). -

PHILLIPS DALES Bedford College, University of London INTRODUCTION It is apparent, from J0rgensen's recent review (1955) of quantitative aspects of filter feeding in invertebrates, that virtually nothing is known of the rate of filtering in polychaete suspension feeders, of which the sabellid and serpulid fan worms are perhaps the most important. There seems to be little variation in the filter-feeding mechanism in different sabellid and serpulid polychaetes. The most detailed account of the feeding mechanism of these worms is that of Sabella published by Nicol (1930) with a resume of earlier work on sabellids and serpulids. Some in• formation on feeding and the anatomy of the crown in other genera may be found in the works of Soulier, 1891 (Serpula, Hydroides, Protula, Branchi• omma, Spirographis and Myxicola), Johansson, 1927 (Serpula and Pomato• ceros) and Thomas, 1940 (Pomatoceros). That the crown arises as a paired structure from the prostomium was shown by Wilson (1936) in Branchiomma. In adults, the crown may retain a clearly divided form, as in many serpulids such as Pomatoceros, or form an almost continuous single cone as in Myxicola or Salmacina. It is not, however, the purpose of the present paper to describe these variations in morphology, but to present some quantitative data on the filtering process. The species investigated were those which could be ob• tained in sufficient quantity at Plymouth. The results of experiments on the sabellids, Myxicola infundibulum (Renier) and Sabella pavonina Savigny, and on the serpulids, Pomatoceros triqueter (L.), Hydroides norvegica (Gunnerus), Spirorbis borealis Daudin, and Salmacina dysteri (Huxley) are presented here. -

In 1988 Pat Hutchings of the Australian Museum, Sydney, undertook an extensive polychaete collection trip off the Kimberley coast of Western Australia, where such a survey had not been conducted since Augener’s (1914) description of some polychaetes from the region. Serpulids were well represented in the collection, and their present study revealed the existence of two new genera, and new species belonging to the genera Protula, Vermiliopsis, Hydroides, Serpula and Spirobranchus. The synonymy of the difficult genera Spirobranchus, Pomatoceros and Pomatoleios is also dealt with. Certain difficult taxa currently referred to as “species complexes” or “species groups” are discussed. For this purpose it was considered necessary to undertake a comparison of apparently similar species, especially of Spirobranchus, from other locations in Australia and the Indo-West Pacific region. Farnham ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis is to explore the ways in which working-class Kānaka Hawai’i (Hawaiian) immigrants in the nineteenth century repurposed and repackaged precontact Hawai’i strategies of accommodation and resistance in their migration towards North America and particularly within California. The arrival of European naturalists, American missionaries, and foreign merchants in the Hawaiian Islands is frequently attributed for triggering this diaspora. However, little has been written about why Hawaiian immigrants themselves chose to migrate eastward across the Pacific or their reasons for permanent settlement in California. Like the ali’i on the Islands, Hawaiian commoners in the diaspora exercised agency in their accommodation and resistance to Pacific imperialism and colonialism as well. Blending labor history, religious history, and anthropology, this thesis adopts an interdisciplinary and ethnohistorical approach that utilizes Hawaiian-language newspapers, American missionary letters, and oral histories from California’s indigenous peoples. -

Jellyfish by definition are planktonic and it would be assumed that connectivity would be high among local populations, and that populations would minimally vary in both ecological and genetic clade-level differences over broad spatial scales (i.e., hundreds to thousands of km). Although data exists on the connectivity of scyphozoan jellyfish, there are few data on cubozoans. Cubozoans are capable swimmers and have more complex and sophisticated visual abilities than scyphozoans. We predict, therefore, that cubozoans have the potential to have finer spatial scale differences in population structure than their relatives, the scyphozoans. Here we review the data available on the population structures of scyphozoans and what is known about cubozoans. The evidence from realized connectivity and estimates of potential connectivity for scyphozoans indicates the following. Some jellyfish taxa have a large metapopulation and very large stocks (>1000 s of km), while others have clade-level differences on the scale of tens of km. All the species are reported for the first time from Pakistan. These species are Hydractinia epidocleensis, Pennaria disticha, Eudendrium capillare, Orthopyxis cf. crenata, Clytia noliformis, C. hummelincki, Dynamena crisioides, D. quadridentata, Sertularia distans, Pycnotheca mirabilis and Macrorhynchia philippina. Ahmed and Hameed (1999), Ahmed et al. (1978) and Haq et al. (1978) have mentioned the presence of hydroids in various habitats along the coast of Pakistan. Javed and Mustaquim (1995) reported Sertularia turbinata (Lamouroux, 1816) from Manora Channel, Karachi. The present paper describes eleven species of Cnidaria collected from the Pakistani coast all of which are new records for Pakistan. -
