Idle & Thackley ward stretches northward from the village of Idle to the boundary with Leeds and also includes Greengates, Apperley Bridge and Thackley. Population The latest population estimates for mid-2019 show that 16,660 people live in Idle & Thackley ward. 18.3% of the population is aged under-16. Worth Valley has the lowest percentage of young people with 16.6% and Little Horton has the highest percentage with 32.7%. 63.2% of the ward’s population is aged between 16 and 64.     PhotoPhoto Cathryn Cathryn Bell Bell 2 There is little doubt that this February has been a remarkable month; the weather has been kind and it has ended with a spring like weekend, the like of which I don’t recall so early in the year. Yes, we have had mild winters, many times over the last twenty years, but not a prolonged warm spell more suited to the Canary Islands. The population of Idle and Thackley have taken full advantage filling the shops and sitting in the sun outside the pubs and clubs. One thing I did notice during the last week of the month was my neighbours sitting outside, in the garden, late in the evening, admittedly they had a fire pit going full blast. But February? Thackley’s licensed trade appears to have taken on a new life too over the last month or so with work starting on the refurbishment of the Great Northern, although we do not know yet what the actual plans are. There has also been investment at the Commercial Inn—see this issue—where they have altered the function facility, making it into one room twice as big, with new carpets and decoration. At the junction of Craghill Road and Thackley Road, planning permission has also just been granted for a micro-pub in the old grocers shop on the corner, formerly run by Mr Teddy Eva. Gardeners are getting ready for the new season, although it is still a little early for planting, with the danger of frosts for another couple of months yet, but it does give us a chance to get those building jobs done, which normally get held up by a cold spell.

    Photo Cathryn Bell Photo Cathryn Bell 2 Welcome to our first edition of 2019; sadly, our break did not include a tour of the Caribbean onboard the company yacht. However, since our relaunch last summer, things have gone well and we are very grateful to all our advertisers and supporters helping us to almost triple our print run. Sincere apologies if you have struggled to get a copy at times but the aim is to increase production. We want to maintain a true community magazine for Idle and Thackley that is content led with local issues foremost, not simply full of adverts; Captain Bill’s yacht will have to wait. Locally, almost the same time that Barclays closed their doors for good, the criminal element nearly blew the doors off the Post Office, taking the cash machine. The damage was horrific and had anybody been on-site the consequences are unimaginable. Sarj and the team would like to express their thanks for the heart- warming support from the local community. The Post Office is all we have now in terms of a local banking provision now so we should value this. Elsewhere, there is plenty going on with a smart conversion to offices of the Idle Coniston building plus plans for a bistro and a micropub in Thackley too. This issue contains all the old favourites plus the story of the Bradford Odeon, a building that defied many who sought to flatten it. Our new What’s On page aims to provide a directory of activities for young and old so help us publicise your activity.

We also maintain rural footpaths, bridleways and restricted byways. This information sheet explains who to contact for any particular query. Recording and Protecting Public Rights of Way If the path is blocked or difficult to use due to action by the landowner or farmer , for example locked gates, fences across the path, etc or you want information about the correct route of a public right of way you should contact the Rights of Way Section, who keep the Council’s official records of public paths and enforce appropriate laws.     Photo Cathryn Bell 2 One month on from Bill’s sad passing and the old boy had a fitting send off at The Commercial in Thackley. To honour him the Trumpit Community Fund will be renamed the Bill Craven Memorial Fund and we are very grateful for the generous donation of £500 from Lonsdale Estate Agents. The fund now stands at £885 and is yours to use if you have a good cause in mind. In this issue we have news of a Trumpit treat for the residents of the Stonebridge complex in Idle; thank you to the Idle Coffee Lounge for their help. In July, we are also treating the residents of Joseph Wright Court in Thackley too, this time with the help of our friends at McCallans. In the news this month, courtesy of its PR machine, the Bradford Telegraph & Argus, news of our cash-strapped Council splashing the cash. In a piece dated 4th June, plans to create several “sports villages” were announced, since rubber stamped. For those with short memories, expensive plans to create a similar facility on the King George V playing fields on Canal Road came to nothing recently despite the push of executive council members Hapless Hinchcliffe and Comical Alex. That is, unless you were a beneficiary of the almost ninety grand the Council spent on consultants deciding to do…nothing. For those interested in how money is distributed in our city - see the article in this issue - no surprise that BD3 is in line for another monsoon of public money. Given huge expenditure in recent years in this area, you have to wonder why? The report was commissioned by the Council’s Dept of Place aka Dept of Chaos.

    SHIPLEY TIMES AND ADVERTISER 1910 to 1945 1 10 January 1913 FOUND DROWNED IN THE CANAL At the Manor House on Tuesday, the District Coroner, Mr E H Hill, held an inquest in reference to the death of John Bancroft (24), a woolcomber of 10 Croft Street, Keighley, whose body was recovered from the Leeds and Liverpool Canal near to the Victoria Bridge, Shipley, on Sunday afternoon. Evidence of identification was given by Thomas Bancroft, an iron moulder of 12 Chatsworth Street, Keighley. He said the deceased was last at home on December 13th, when he left to go to his work at Shipley. He lived with his sister, and was quite well and hearty. Mrs Annie Thomas, wife of Joshua Thomas, woolcomber of 14 Raglan Street, Bradford Arms, said the deceased worked at the same mill as her husband. On December 14th, as her husband did not return home, she went in search of him and found him in the company of John Bancroft. Both her husband and the deceased came to her house together. In reply to the Coroner, who asked as to their condition, witness said they had had something to drink, but they knew what they were doing. She provided them with food, and after he had had a sleep, deceased left the house to go home. It was raining hard at the time, and witness asked deceased if he would be all right, to which he replied in the affirmative.
