On top of that we have another league match next week against Athersley Recreation Paul’s consistency is a feature of his play and has been since his very first appearance. which is also due to be played at Dennyfield. Since the season began both team’s fortunes have rather reversed, Staveley began slowly losing their first two games, both by the minimum score but winning the next two. Last week they thumped Hemsworth five one after winning away at Albion. Thackley began the season with a draw and a victory but have lost the last three conceding eleven goals in the process. Staveley now sit in mid-table poised to rise further while Thackley are in danger of falling into the danger zone. Our association with Staveley goes back to the time when Billy Fox was manager because he went from being our manager to become Staveley chief. Since that time games between the two clubs have taken place within the context of the NCEL Premier Division and I think it’s fair to say that, by and large, Staveley have achieved more success than Thackley when the two teams have met. The last time we did play each other was the season before last when we drew 1-1 at their ground, Inkersall Road. That result was seen as an achievement by Thackley because at the time Staveley were riding high in the league. Today we badly need to improve if we are to take anything from the game, as we know Staveley have never been an easy team to play and today I don’t think will be an exception. On a brighter note, last week we were fascinated to receive a visit from Russell, a crow that seems to have captivated the village recently. Russell shows no fear of humans and perched on various places as the match progressed. He was on the field in the thick of things, on the surrounding railings, the dug-out and the cross bar. Let’s just hope that he keeps himself safe and stays on the side lines if he visit us today. Watch out for him.

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT STAVELEY

Staveley was formerly a mining town with several large coal mines situated in and around the area, with the closest being Ireland Pit (Ireland Colliery Brass Band is named after the colliery). However, the pit has closed, along with the others in the area. Staveley Miners Welfare on Market Street was built in 1893 as an indoor market hall by Charles Paxton Markham, for a time owner of Markham & Co. At that time, it was called Markham Hall in memory of his father. Markham played a large role in the industrial development of the area around Staveley. Through his company Markham & Co. and its RIO ALBERRY CHARLIE BELL RIEVES BOOCOCK WILL EADES successor Staveley Coal and Iron Company, Markham owned ironstone quarries, several coal mines (including Markham Colliery), chemical works, ironworks and an engineering works specialising in mining and tunnelling equipment. Other major local industries in recent history have included Staveley Works foundry and Staveley Chemicals. It is also the home town of the Townes Brewery and therefore the original home of Garage Beer. Modern industry includes a plastic pipe moulding factory for Brett Martin plc.

The Hall in its present form was built by Sir Peter Frecheville in 1604. Before the current building there had been buildings on this site for over 700 years. A brief history of the building and its ownership follows: Hascuit de Musard was awarded the Manor of Staveley after the Norman Conquest of 1066. In 1306 the Musard family died out CAMERON HOUGH DECLAN HOUGH SAM KAY and Ralph de Frecheville became the new Lord. The Frechevilles lived in the Hall until they died out in 1682. In 1603 Sir Peter de Frecheville was knighted by James I at Worksop and he wished to make Staveley Hall a suitable residence for a knight and Justice of the Peace. The architect of Sir Peter de Frechevilles house is not known but may well be Huntingdon Smithson – the architect employed by the Cavendish's at Bolsover Castle. In 1682 and the house was sold to the Cavendish family. James Cavendish died in 1751 and the Hall and Park reverted to The Duke of Devonshire. In 1756 the Rector of Staveley managed to persuade the Duke of Devonshire to allow his son (and then a series of clerics) to live there. It remained as a rectory until bought by Staveley Urban District Council in 1967. The Hall was designated by English Heritage as a listed building (grade II) in 1974.

Matty Parkin was booked for going through the back of Sibanda late in the half as Thackley took their one goal advantage into the break. Half time: Staveley Miners Welfare 0 Thackley 1 Thackley could have been three up ten minutes into the second half had lady luck been on their side. Dan Broadbent’s header, following a corner, came down from the underside of the bar, Wright managed to pounce on the loose ball before Albert Ibrahimi saw his shot rebound from the inside of the post with the Staveley keeper stranded. Jack Normanton came on for Asa Mitchell, Thackley were not having as much possession in this half, the home side were showing little sign of being a man down. Substitute Michael Burke’s header landed on the roof of the net following a long throw and Wright saved Broadbent’s shot from the edge of the box. Wilson did well to thwart Froggatt after he got clear before Ben Grech-Brooksbank replaced goal scorer Sibanda. Staveley equalised with a rather soft goal, a free kick from inside the centre circle passed through the defence to the head of Gary Mundy, he managed to guide the ball just inside the post. Nicky Matthews came on for the hard-working Broadbent before James Rothel saw his shot clear the bar. The goal had lifted the home side and their supporters and they started to exert some pressure on the Thackley defence. Both sides created half chances, Wilson coming out to stop Parkin in his tracks and Simon Poole putting Ibrahimi’s cross the wrong side of the post in time added on. In the end the game finished all square, although there had been only two goals, it had been a thoroughly entertaining game. Full time: Staveley Miners Welfare 1 Thackley 1 Thackley put in a battling performance against the form team in the league, they matched Staveley all over the field. With a bit of luck, it could have been game over ten minutes into the second half but on such fine lines games are won and lost, and in this case drawn. YOU CAN’T BEAT THESE JOKES WE’RE BACK WITH DAD’S FAVOURITES – ‘THE OLD GITS PAGE’ One thing that the ‘Old Gits’ have in common is that they are all dads. Unfortunately, they are also all prone to tell the jokes that dads are famous for!

Mick Lodge Stewart (Willy) Steven Geoff (Scotty) Eddie Tony (Foggy) Willingham Paley Scott Williams Foulds Willy’s next door neighbour says to him ‘What’s the difference between poached eggs and pea soup?’ ‘Anyone can poach eggs’ says Willy. The old gits are well known for their philosophical musings on the vagaries of life here are just a few of them: Mick: ‘I don’t need a compass to tell me which way the wind shines.’ ‘I tell you you’re cutting your throat to spite your face.’ ‘I want quality, not quantity, but lots of it.’ ‘It’s like the blind talking to the blind here.’ Geoff ‘It’s no skin off my teeth.’ ‘The ball is in his camp now.’ ‘The service is available 24/7, 5 days a week.’ ‘This should find out what separates the wheat from the sheep.’ Willy ‘We need to find a solution here, even if it isn’t the right one.’ ‘This is just like six of one and two dozen of the other.’ ‘You’re a minefield of information.’ Steven ‘You’re still a bit green under the collar.’ ‘He’s just a flash in the pants.’ ‘I think I can finally see the carrot at the end of the tunnel.’ Tony ‘Don’t look for a gift in the horse’s mouth.’ ‘I’d like to be a fish on the wall at that meeting.’ ‘I think you might have hit the nail on the button.’ Eddie is walking home from the pub late one night when he takes a short cut across a cow field. Halfway across he drops his hat. He has to try on fifty others before he finds it again. Steven and Geoff are walking home from the pub when they come across a dog, sitting on the kerb, licking its privates. They watch for a while before Steven says, ‘I wish I could do that.’ Geoff looks at him and says, ‘Wouldn’t you like to make friends with him first?’ Willy goes into Waterstones. He approaches the assistant behind the counter and says ‘Do you keep stationery here?’ ‘No.’ replies the woman. ‘Sometimes I wriggle about a bit.’ Geoff, Steven and Willy get talking. Geoff says ‘The Russians were the first in space.’ Steven says ‘Yes but the Americans were first on the moon.’ Willy says , ‘So what? The English will be the first to land on the sun!’ ‘You can’t land on the sun, you twit,’ says Geoff ‘You’d burn up!’ ‘Duhhh!’ says Willy ‘We’ll go at night.’
