Vienna International Centre Terms of Reference Organisational Section/Unit : UNODC, Brussels Liaison Office Office Phone: 0032 2 290 25 80 Duty Station: Brussels, Belgium Supervisor: Ms Yatta Dakowah, Representative and Chief of the Office Duration: 3 to 6 months (with a preference for 6 months) Starting time: Monday 3 September 2018 Deadline for application: Friday 17 August 2018 The main eligibility criteria for the UNOV/UNODC internship programme are: - Interns may be accepted provided that one of the following conditions is met: ✓ The applicant must be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); ✓ The applicant must be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); ✓ The applicant must have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation; - A person who is the child or sibling of a staff member shall not be eligible to apply for an internship at the United Nations. An applicant who bears to a staff member any other family relationship may be engaged as an intern provided that he or she shall not be assigned to the same work unit of the staff member nor placed under the direct or indirect supervision of the staff member. Background information: The tasks of the UNODC Brussels Liaison Office are as follows: ✓ Enhancing and fostering partnerships with European Union institutions, in particular with the European Commission, and strengthening policy exchange and dialogue with key partners such as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the World Customs Organization and the United Nations system present in Brussels; ✓ Increasing understanding of the work of UNODC related to drugs, crime and terrorism by promoting health, justice and security within the European Union and to a wider public; ✓ Promoting UNODC and the impact of our work to Brussels-based think tanks, NGOs, associations, universities and the general public. Internship Assignments: United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime │ UNODC Brussels Office │ 14, Rue Montoyer │ 1000 Brussels │ Belgium Tel.: (+32-2) 2902580 │ │ E-mail: [email protected] │ www.unodc.org 2 ✓ In general, support the Representative of the Brussels Liaison Office in policy and networking activities with counterparts in Brussels and at UNODC HQs in Vienna; ✓ Monitor, analyze and synthesize various sources of information regarding developments in the institutions covered by the Office and in terms of policy initiatives, events, public announcements and other news items of relevance to UNODC; ✓ Research, collect and analyze documents in preparation of meetings with stakeholders and partners, including other UN agencies; if possible accompany the Representative to meetings and assist in the follow-up; ✓ Monitor EU funding opportunities relevant to UNODC; ✓ Support the BLO in the preparation and conduct of UNODC or UN team events in Brussels; ✓ Ad hoc assignments as requested; Learning elements: After the assignment is completed, the intern will have gained experience in: ✓ Working for an international organization; ✓ Gaining knowledge and experience in partnership building work with EU institutions, NATO and other counterparts in Brussels; ✓ Gaining knowledge and experience in working as part of the UN team in Brussels on joint initiatives and EU funding; ✓ Gaining in-depth knowledge of UNODC’s mandate; Expected Qualifications/Skills: ✓ Languages: very good English; French is an asset; ✓ Standard computer and very good communication skills; ✓ Practical knowledge of, and experience with the functioning of the EU and its institutions is a highly appreciated asset; ✓ Proactive and independent work style; ✓ Knowledge of one or more UNODC mandate areas is an asset; Application procedures for the UNODC Internship Programme ✓ The hiring of interns for our Programme will be done using the United Nations Secretariat online recruitment system, Inspira, and eligible candidates can apply on the United Nations Career Portal at http://careers.un.org. Prymak Amid the splendours of the Vatican Museum in Rome, amongst the lush and abundant canvases of Raphael and other great artists, hangs an exceptionally large painting depicting the defeat of the last great invasion of Europe by the Turks: the relief of the 1683 siege of Vienna by a coalition of Christian forces led by the king of Poland, John III, also known as Jan Sobieski.1 Sobieski was the last king of Poland to attempt to restore his country’s power and glory before the steady decline and final disappearance of that state in the late eighteenth century, and he is written into the early modern history of Europe as the man who symbolized the repulse of that power- ful Ottoman attempt to conquer Europe, or, as it was seen then, the last Muslim invasion of Christendom.     View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Repository@Hull - CRIS The ‘Gay Olympics’?: The Eurovision Song Contest and the politics of LGBT/European belonging Catherine Baker (University of Hull) Accepted for publication in European Journal of International Relations Abstract The politics of gay and transgender visibility and representation at the Eurovision Song Contest, an annual televised popular music festival presented to viewers as a contest between European nations, show that processes of interest to Queer International Relations do not just involve states or even international institutions; national and transnational popular geopolitics over ‘LGBT rights’ and ‘Europeanness’ equally constitute the understandings of ‘the international’ with which Queer IR is concerned. Building on Cynthia Weber’s reading the persona of the 2014 Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst with ‘queer intellectual curiosity’, this paper demonstrates that Eurovision shifted from, in the late 1990s, an emerging site of gay and trans visibility to, by 2008–14, part of a larger discursive circuit taking in international mega-events like the Olympics, international human-rights advocacy, Europe/Russia relations, and the politics of state homophobia and transphobia. Contest organisers thus had to take positions – ranging from detachment to celebration – about ‘LGBT’ politics in host states and the Eurovision region. The construction of spatio-temporal hierarchies around attitudes to LGBT rights, however, revealed exclusions that corroborate other critical arguments on the reconfiguration of national and European identities around ‘LGBT equality’. Introduction The theoretical interventions of Queer International Relations, which recognise how sexualities and gender non-conformity are embedded in international politics, have ‘transformative’ potential for International Relations (Langlois, 2015: 1).

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with their 169 targets provide a transformative agenda that commits the governments of the world to leave no one behind. The SDGs build on the Millennium Development Goals, calling for integrated and inclusive approaches that recognise the imperative of improving living conditions for all, but especially the most vulnerable. The inextricable link between health and sustainable development means that health is influenced by and contributes to all of the 17 SDGs. This central role of health in sustainable development was re-affirmed by the Shanghai Declaration and the Vienna Declaration. The Vienna Declaration specifically calls on all parts of the public health community, in Europe and beyond, working at all levels, local, national, regional and global, to recognise the multi- tiered determinants of health and opportunities for action. This Stockholm Declaration builds on the momentum of the Vienna Declaration and calls for networks of actors to exchange ideas to strengthen action with an emphasis on building resilient and healthy communities. System level resilience is a priority within the Sustainable Development Goals. The public health challenges being faced today require that communities and systems develop the capacity to absorb, adapt, anticipate and transform when exposed to external threats as well as forecast ‘shocks’ and take pre-emptive actions1. 1 2.
