Avant tout parce que le lieu a changé. Ce n’est pas au Collège de France, mais chez lui, à Sèvres, que Jean-Pierre Vernant m’a accueilli cette fois. Il m’a proposé de le rencontrer lors d’un déjeuner qu’il avait lui-même préparé. Cela a favorisé une discussion plus décontractée, propice aux opinions plus spontanées. Toutefois, la conversation qui en résulte est fortement fragmentée, scandée par le repas, le café et le cigare. Les déplacements à l’intérieur de l’appartement ont été accompagnés de problèmes techniques lors de l’enregistrement. Divers passages, inaudibles, ont été perdus, ce qui rend l’ensemble encore plus discontinu. J’ai tenté de combler les lacunes, lors de la transcription, avec les notes de bas de page, trop nombreuses et trop longues peut-être. 2 Comme Jean-Pierre Vernant m’avait encouragé, lors du précédent entretien, à ne pas consulter les notes que j’avais préalablement préparées, j’ai préféré, à cette occasion, ne pas les prendre. J’ai simplement dressé une liste des points que je souhaitais aborder. Ils se résumaient à trois thèmes : 1. le contexte dans lequel a été fondé le Centre de recherches comparées sur les sociétés anciennes ; 2. les relations de l’helléniste avec les historiens de la mouvance des Annales ; 3. certains aspects de son travail de philosophe avant qu’il ne devienne un helléniste proprement dit (son mémoire de Licence sur Diderot et son activité en tant que professeur de lycée à Toulouse et à Paris, pendant et après son engagement dans la Résistance). 3 Le titre est, de nouveau, extrait de l’entretien, plus précisément de la dernière phrase. Dans son contexte, elle exprimait l’enthousiasme procuré par la façon dont ses élèves accueillaient ses cours de philosophie. Ils avaient compris, me déclara-t-il, « ce que je pensais » et « ce que je faisais ». Souhaitons que le même enthousiasme gagne les lecteurs d’aujourd’hui, afin qu’ils puissent également comprendre la pensée et les réalisations d’une œuvre décidément polumètis.     1 “Everybody Loves a Muscle Boi”: Homos, Heroes, and Foes in Post-9/11 Spoofs of the 300 Spartans Ralph J. Poole “It’s Greek to whom?” In 2007-2008, a significant accumulation of cinematic and other visual media took up a celebrated episode of Greek antiquity recounting in different genres and styles the rise of the Spartans against the Persians. Amongst them are the documentary The Last Stand of the 300 (2007, David Padrusch), the film 300 (2007, Zack Snyder), the video game 300: March to Glory (2007, Collision Studios), the short film United 300 (2007, Andy Signore), and the comedy Meet the Spartans (2008, Jason Friedberg/Aaron Seltzer). Why is the legend of the 300 Spartans so attractive for contemporary American cinema? A possible, if surprising account for the interest in this ancient theme stems from an economic perspective. Written at the dawn of the worldwide financial crisis, the fight of the 300 Spartans has served as point of reference for the serious loss of confidence in the banking system, but also in national politics in general. William Streeter of the ABA Banking Journal succinctly wonders about what robs bankers’ precious resting hours: What a fragile thing confidence is.     300: Cultural Stereotypes and War against Barbarism Masoud Kowsari1 Abstract: During the era of Bush administration and post-September 11th anti-terrorism discourse, the movie 300 was one of the best exemplar of a close relationship between Hollywood pop culture products and the neo- conservatives’ political discourse of nationalism. From my point of view, 300 is not an example of outstanding artistic films, but a film that more than any other film contains an Iranophobic discourse, produced by Hollywood. The film is another example for ‘warfare-ization’ of public sphere and envisioning war as part of the people’s everyday life using pop culture products in U.S. after 9/11. Connecting war with collective memory, 300 brings war to the heart of everyday life. The Western or American youths should think that just like the brave and devoted Spartan soldiers in 300, they also fight for democracy, freedom, and glory. This film is full of cultural stereotypes on the Eastern and Iranian culture, in particular, their identity. For example, women are depicted as erotic objects. In contrast to the Spartan women who are free, brave, kind mothers and faithful wives, the Iranian women are represented as slavish, lustful, indecent, and homosexual. They look like the sexy dancers in nightclubs and discothèques. Using van Leeuwen’s approach in critical discourse analysis (2008), this paper is aimed at analyzing this film as a media text.     The Battle of Thermopylae From the beginning of the 5th Century B.C. the all powerful Persian Kingdom that extended up to the coastline of Asia Minor, began its attempts to expand towards the West, to the lands mainly of Greece. The first serious organised operation by King Darius failed after the Hellenic victory in Marathon in 490 B.C. Nine years later, in 481 B.C., a second campaign was launched against Greece after being planned and organised for many years by Xerxes, son and successor to Darius. In fact, before beginning, he sent emissaries to the Greek cities asking for “γην and ύδωρ” (=earth and water); in other words, asking them to submit to the Persian forces. The only cities he did not send emissaries to were Athens and Sparta The Persian Kingdom at that time was considered to be mythical by the Greeks: great wealth, huge land areas, powerful armies, dozens of conquered races. Herodotus, who described the complete campaign of Xerxes, reported that the force that began to march against Greece in 481 B.C. amounted to 1,700,000 warriors and 1,207 warships. In total, including attendants and non-military, they numbered around 5,000,000. These numbers are surely exaggerated, since the Persian force seemed much larger to the eyes of the Greeks. Most studiers agree today that the army probably amounted to between 150,000- 400,000 men. It is worth noting however that the army included warriors from 46 different nations, while its most significant unit was the “Immortals”, the select Persian Royal Guard who were named thus because their number always remained at 10,000.

CHAPLIN (Under the Direction of Leara Rhodes) ABSTRACT This thesis examines themes of disability representation and ableism in the film 300 . Though 300 has been criticized for alleged racism, sexism, and homophobia, and as a commentary on U.S. foreign policy, almost no one has examined the film’s representation of disability. Using a social construct theory framework, a content analysis of the treatment of disability and able-bodiedness in the film has been conducted.     189 Prepare for Glory: The Multiplication of the Digitally Hyperreal Hero in Frank Miller’s/ Zack Snyder’s 300 Giorgos Dimitriadis The filmic adaptation of Frank Miller’s graphic novel 300 by Zack Snyder stands right between recorded history and postmodern entertainment, with its storyline crammed between an actual event and its virtual filmic shell. The muscular homogeneity of the Spartan army, made possible with digital technology, is viewed as a kaleidoscopic reflection of the relation between one story and its many narrated versions, visually exemplified by the army of 300 Spartans, in which specificity is effaced and the individual conflates with the dehumanized mass. Drawing on the libidinal dynamics of male muscularity, the film fuses history, the superhero tradition and current so- cial anxieties to present an abstract ideal, death in the noble service of free- dom, through a specific, contemporary viewpoint. Digital post-processing ensures that the aesthetics of the film is the same as that of the graphic novel, minimalist but hardly life-like; thus the film celebrates the ability of digital imaging to transform a single abstract idea/ ideal into a pop culture spectacle, faithful, as such, to the time and era that it addresses. Introduction his paper will attempt to approach the representational impact of the filmic adaptation of Frank Miller’s graphic novel 300 by Zack Snyder, T focusing on the way digital technology transforms one individual his- torical event, the Battle at Thermopylae, into a contemporary mass cultural product. The film represents the battle between the massive Persian army and a Spartan battalion defending the Thermopylae Passage in Boeotia, Greece in 480 BC; yet, unlike similar cinematic attempts in the past, such as Rudolph Maté’s 300 Spartans in 1962, Snyder’s 300, closely following the aesthetics of the graphic novel, presents the Spartan army as a group of almost identical 190 Giorgos Dimitriadis hypermuscular ancient supermen with exaggerated military skills and moral ideals.

    MARATHON, SALAMIS, AND WESTERN CIVILIZATION Professor Theodore P. Perros Marathon is a word known worldwide through its link to the race (26 miles and 385 yards) in the Olympic Games. Many also know that its origin honors the Greek runner who raced to Athens to announce to the anxious Athenians that they had defeated the Persians at Marathon. He had strength only to deliver the message before he collapsed and died. With respect to Salamis, many have neither heard of Salamis nor its relationship to Marathon. Nevertheless, from a historical perspective and if defined in terms of their significance to the development of Western Civilization which was founded on the principles of the ancient Hellenic heritage, it can be stated with certainty that it would not have happened without the Greeks prevailing over the Persians at both sites. The reason for asserting this conclusion requires a review of the events which led to the battles of Marathon and Salamis. Attica is the region in Greece which also encompasses Athens. It was the area into which the refugees of the Dorian invasion (9th century BCE) eventually settled. They spoke an Attic dialect which became the language of the Athenians. Over the centuries, significant migration took place from Attica to the central western region of Anatolia, and the islands of Chios and Samos. A number of cities were established and prospered. Of greater importance was the fact that these peoples spoke the language of the Athenians. With the help of this common language, it was only a matter of time before some cities grew in size and commercial importance to the extent that they dominated the region in which they were located (roughly an area on the coast of 100 miles in length and some 20 miles in width).
