    ALEXANDER, JOHN DAVID, D.M.A. A Study of the Influence of Texts from the Liber Usualis on Three Improvised French Organ Works by Marcel Dupré, Charles Tournemire, and Olivier Latry. (2020) Directed by Welborn Young and André Lash. 82 pp. Improvisation has played a vital role in the French school of organ playing over the last several centuries, both in sacred and secular settings. Within the context of Catholic masses in France, the majority of the music played by the organists is improvisational. Much of the thematic material of these improvisations comes from the service music contained in the Liber Usualis. This document explores the treatment of these themes from the Liber Usualis, particularly focusing on the impact of the text of each chant on three works by Marcel Dupré, Charles Tournemire, and Olivier Latry, three of the leading improvisateurs of the twentieth and twenty-first century. Studying published reconstructions of their improvisations based on themes from the Liber Usualis gives insight into their respective improvisational languages and the affect created by a thorough knowledge of the text of each Liber Usualis theme used. Following an introduction, a chapter is dedicated to each composer and his work: Marcel Dupré’s Symphonie-Passion, Charles Tournemire’s Choral-Improvisation sur le ‘Victimae Paschali,’ and Olivier Latry’s Salve Regina. Each of these chapters contains brief biographical information about the composer, an overview of the instrument on which the original improvisation was performed, a description of each work, and how the chant is incorporated into each. The final chapter contains a comparison of the three works, reexamining the impact of the chant text on rhythm, registration, dynamics, form, and texture.

    A HISTORY OF THE ORGANS AT THE CHURCH OF ST. LUKE & THE EPIPHANY Organs at St. Luke's Church The first organ for St. Luke's Church was built in 1840 by E. & G. G. Hook of Boston. It had 3 manuals (keyboards) and pedals. The full organ comprised of 29 and a half stops, 1,552 pipes and was at the time noted to be one of the best church organs in Philadelphia. It was well received by visiting organists of the city. The Stoplist was as follows (1): Great: Great Open Diapason Second Open Diapason Stopped Diapason 8 Principal Night horn Twelfth Fifteenth Sesquiatera III Trumpet Clarion Swell: Open Diapason Stopped Diapason Clarabella Principal Fifteenth Piccolo Trumpet Clarionet Haubois (Oboe) Tremulant Choir: Open Diapason Stopped Diapason Dulciana Principal Flute Fifteenth Cremona Later on the organ started having trouble and eventually was replaced in 1877. The new organ was built by E. & G. G. Hook & Hastings of Boston. Since the first organ was built, the company changed its name. The older Hook organ was traded in as part of the payment towards the new organ. There is a possibility that Hook & Hastings used some of the pipework from the previous organ but that can not be verified. That organ was of larger size with 51 stops.     THE AEOLIAN SKINNER ORGAN History of the Organ The first organ in Saint Paul’s present building was designed by Charles Courboin, organist of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, and built by the E.M. Skinner Organ Company of Boston. The instrument, three manuals with 43 ranks, was situated in the space behind the reredos and in an attic chamber high above the nave, with sounds coming through openings in the wooden ceiling of the church. It was a superb example of the Romantic orchestral organ, possessing a warm sound, rich in color. It was at its best in transcriptions of music writ- ten for orchestra and organ music of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. However, like most organs of the period, it lacked the clarity necessary for the performance of Bach, and the intensity implied in the great French school of organ composition. In the early 1950’s, Saint Paul’s Vestry began to address the deteriorating mechanical condition of the Skinner organ and its musical limitations. A contract was signed in 1953 with the Aeolian-Skinner Organ Company of Boston to re- build the instrument as part of the church’s centennial cele- bration. G. Donald Harrison, president and tonal director of the firm, worked with Thomas Dunn, organist at Saint Paul’s, in developing a completely new instrument of “American Classic” design. The “American Classic” concept, Harrison’s own creation, was eclectic. It combines the best elements of several traditions: the seventeenth-century German organ, the nineteenth-century French symphonic organ and the English cathedral or- gan for which so much Anglican church music is written.
