DJ Skills the Rise of the Hip-Hop DJ 3
The Rise of the Hip-Hop DJ 1 74 The Rise of The Hip-hop DJ DJs were Hip-hop’s original architects, and remain crucial to its contin- ued development. Hip-hop is more than a style of music; it’s a culture. As with any culture, there are various artistic expressions of Hip-hop, the four principal expressions being: • visual art (graffiti) • dance (breaking, rocking, locking, and popping, collectively known in the media as “break dancing”) • literature (rap lyrics and slam poetry) • music (DJing and turntablism) Unlike the European Renaissance or the Ming Dynasty, Hip-hop is a culture that is very much alive and still evolving. Some argue that Hip-hop is the most influential cultural movement in history, point- ing to the globalization of Hip-hop music, fashion, and other forms of expression. Style has always been at the forefront of Hip-hop. Improvisation is called free styling, whether in rap, turntablism, breaking, or graf- fiti writing. Since everyone is using the essentially same tools (spray paint for graffiti writers, microphones for rappers and beat boxers, their bodies for dancers, and two turntables with a mixer for DJs), it’s the artists’ personal styles that set them apart. It’s no coincidence that two of the most authentic movies about the genesis of the move- ment are titled Wild Style and Style Wars. There are also many styles of writing the word “Hip-hop.” The mainstream media most often oscillates between “hip-hop” and “hip hop.” The Hiphop Archive at Harvard writes “Hiphop” as one word, 2 DJ Skills The Rise of the Hip-Hop DJ 3 with a capital H, embracing KRS-ONE’s line of reasoning that “Hiphop Kool DJ Herc is a culture with its own foundation narrative, history, natives, and 7 In 1955 in Jamaica, a young woman from the parish of Saint Mary mission.” After a great deal of input from many people in the Hip-hop community, I’ve decided to capitalize the word but keep the hyphen, gave birth to a son who would become the father of Hip-hop. -

Ohmega Watts, and Continues to Challenge the Expectations of What a Rap Album Could Be
While the eclecticism of his debut album The Find won him many fans, Watts Happening pushes the envelope to reveal even more about MC and producer Ohmega Watts, and continues to challenge the expectations of what a rap album could be. The record includes collaborations with OHMEGA WATTS - WATTS HAPPENING lauded Philly-based MC/producer Jneiro Jarel, and up FOR INFORMATION AND SOUNDCLIPS OF OUR TITLES, GO TO WWW.UBIQUITYRECORDS.COM/PRESS STREET DATE: 10/09/2007 n’coming Brazilian vocalist Tita Lima who appears on the DJ-friendly Brazilian-tinged excursion “Adaptacao.” Watts wrote “Are You Satisfied” for Bay Area blues n’funkstress, and one of James Brown’s favorite female vocalists Sugarpie Desanto, inspired by recent losses she suffered in a tragic fire at her Oakland home. London instrumentalist, and label mate, Shawn Lee also provides some key sounds from his over-stocked studio. The album includes features from favorite Watts cohorts like the Lightheaded crew, Triple Grip and Theory Hazit. Ohmega Watts has a wide-eyed, all-encompassing, set of musical influences that range from the more obvious soul and funk tunes, to being a big fan of Stereolab and Broadcast, and psychedelic Brazilian sounds, to music by UK producers like Quantic and Mr Scruff. As such Watts Happening follows on from his debut album, The Find, exploring and presenting a multitude of beats, rhythms, and styles. With The Find he threaded these sounds together for the first time and his popularity grew organically from a virtually-unknown MC to one who has performed all over the USA including dates like Lollapalooza and Bumbershoot with Lyrics Born and The Greyboy Allstars. -

Great album. Good book.By Dawn-MarieUnlike Entroducing the album, which is essentially flawless, Eliot Wilder's book has its pros and cons. I'm going to throw out four items I think any prospective buyer of the book should know, and then briefly comment on what I found to be the pros and cons of each item.1. The author is an old white guy. Pro: This was certainly a unique perspective. I mean, I guess I'm an "old white guy" too, now, but I grew up in the 80s and 90s, and Eliot Wilder grew up in the 1960s. In fact, he spends the first 22 pages of the book talking about how he grew up listening to the Four Tops, the Kinks, and Buffalo Springfield on AM radio. Con: Since the book is basically a long interview with Shadow, I feel like better questions would have been asked by someone more familiar with hip-hop. -
I. Race, Gender, and Asian American Sporting Identities
I. Race, Gender, and Asian American Sporting Identities Dat Nguyen is the only Vietnamese American drafted by a National Football League team. He was an All-American at Texas A & M University (1998) and an All-Pro for the Dallas Cowboys (2003). Bookcover image: http://www.amazon.com/Dat-Tackling-Life-NFL-Nguyen/dp/1623490634 Truck company Gullwing featured two Japanese Americans in their platter of seven of their “hottest skaters,” Skateboarder Magazine, January 1979. 2 Amerasia Journal 41:2 (2015): 2-24 10.17953/ aj.41.2.2 Skate and Create Skateboarding, Asian Pacific America, and Masculinity Amy Sueyoshi In the early 1980s, my oldest brother, a senior in high school, would bring home a different girl nearly every month, or so the family myth goes. They were all white women, punkers in leath- er jackets and ripped jeans who exuded the ultimate in cool. I thought of my brother as a rock star in his ability to attract so many edgy, beautiful women in a racial category that I knew at the age of nine was out of our family’s league. As unique as I thought my brother’s power of attraction to be, I learned later that numerous Asian stars rocked the stage in my brother’s world of skateboarding. A community of intoxicatingly rebellious Asian and Pacific Islander men thrived during the 1970s and 1980s within a skater world almost always characterized as white, if not blatantly racist. These men’s positioning becomes particularly notable during an era documented as a time of crippling emas- culation for Asian American men. -

Marketing Stack Spotlight: Marketing Technology Analytics Lessons FAMEHOUSE THE FAME HOUSE FAME THE 01 INTRODUCTION By Mike Fiebach, Founder & CEO IN THE SIX YEARS SINCE I founded Fame House, a lot has changed. The rapid pace of digital innovation has transformed how artists build and activate their audiences, steering the industry away from traditional, album cycle-driven marketing strategies toward a 365 days a year, omni-channel approach. The emergence, proliferation, and mass adoption of direct to consumer tools and social media have enabled this shift. We are now firmly in the era of the music and technology industry—where comprehensive digital audience growth, management, and monetization is king. In an era where new digital platforms emerge regularly, the medium itself is often as important as the message, and the message must speak to a broader artist-driven storyline that translates across platforms. To thrive in this new paradigm, artists, labels, and managers must embrace a technology-agnostic strategy, combined with an omni-channel digital branding approach. This may sound like a lot of jargon, but I believe the substance behind these buzzwords is the foundation for success in the new music industry. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 3, 2019 San Francisco, CA 42nd Annual Haight-Ashbury Street Fair Announces 2019 Line-Up - sponsored by COOKIES. The Haight-Ashbury Street Fair is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the cultural and historical significance of this district by sponsoring the annual community celebration and in supporting community programs that incorporate the neighborhood’s spirit of diversity, cooperation and humanism. Donate here to keep the tradition going! Since 1978, we have produced the annual, one-day street fair that allows the community to celebrate the cultural contributions this district has made to San Francisco. This festival provides the neighborhood with the opportunity to showcase the variety of mercantile, cultural and community services available in this district. By creating a festival atmosphere, the street fair creates a stage for many artisans, musicians, artists and performers to present their work to the public. And, as a community service, HASF enables many non-profit organizations a chance to conduct outreach campaigns. Our activities are not limited to a one-day festival. We also sponsor other community events such as the annual Halloween Hootenanny that provides a safe environment for the children of the neighborhood to celebrate the spirit of Halloween. We hope (intend) to promote and create many more programs and events that help serve the cultural needs of the Haight-Ashbury and anyone else that would like to join in on the fun. The 42nd Annual Haight Street Festival takes place Sunday, June 09, 2019, 11 - 5:30 pm. The 2019 Lineup has brought in veteran Edward Jennings of Haight Street’s historic i-Beam to curate an unforgettable line-up with collaborations and surprise guest appearances not to be missed.
