地區總監晚宴中,我們見証了兩個新扶輪社的授証﹕RC of Amazadi, Macau and RC of Kowloon Central。

3450地區不斷增強,蒙古國將有三個新的扶輪社誕生﹕RC of Ulaanbaartar Peace Avenue, RC of Narlag, Mongolia and RC of Erdenet。

4 Fabulous Experience in District 9640

The outbound Group Study Exchange (GSE) team has successfully completed the exchange to District 9640 in Queensland and New South Wales of Australia. The team departed on March 14, 2013 and returned to Hong Kong on April 15, 2013. The team is comprised of Team Leader – Past President Helen Or of Rotary Club of Bayview Sunshine Hong Kong and four Team Members - Matthew Cheung (Research Analyst), Franco Chan (Performing Artist), Bolor- Erdene Tumurchudur (Contract Management Specialist), and Edwina Chung (Public Relations Practitioner).

During the month, the team traveled more than 1,600 km within District 9640. We lived in eight different towns in altogether 37 host families. We have met over 800 people and visited Gold Coast City Council, Cultural Centers and museums, conference centers, theme parks, farms and factories, and many nature reserves and trails. It has been a wonderful experience to observe different businesses, vocations and a lifestyle that is different from that of our district.

At the same time, the team has also served as ambassadors of our district. People we met were very interested in learning more about Hong Kong, Macau and Mongolia. Other than formal presentations at club meetings and at District Conference, we had a lot of opportunities to get into in-depth discussions with our host families and with Rotarians of the host clubs. The exchange of information and idea was much appreciated by the Rotarians in District 9640.

The team has also built great friendship with our host families and Rotarians in District 9640. We would like to thank District Governor Sandra and Sam and District 9640 for the hospitality and warmth that they have shared with us. In particular, we would like to thank GSE Chair District Governor Nominee Wendy and her spouse Charles, the GSE Committee, our host clubs

5 (Rotary Club of Ashmore, Boonah, Goondiwindi, Tenterfield, Ballina, Yamba, Mt Warning AM, Surfers Sunrise), and our host families for all their attention on us while we were there. The arrangement was superb and we had never had a dull moment. Within District 3450, we would also like to thank GSE Chair Chelsia To and our endorsing clubs (Rotary Club of Bayview Sunshine Hong Kong, Kowloon, New Territories, Queensway, Ulaanbaatar).

Even though the exchange is over, the friendship that is built within the GSE team has not ended. The team’s involvement in Rotary will also continue. You will certainly hear more from each of the team members from now on. Each of them is eager to give back what they have gained. And this is the spirit of Group Study Exchange.

6 DISTRICT SERVES Heart-to-Heart with the Doyen

This morning I’ve come calling on the Doyen.

Making a turn into Bowen Road, Mid-levels, I come to a cluster of time-honored low-rise nestled, almost merging, into the surrounding ancient banyans so quintessential Hong Kong. The elevator up is mahogany-paneled with a sliding-grille for door -- feature of a by-gone era, a rare remaining one now -- so impressively well-kept and polished it speaks of a pride and loyalty to a fine tradition.

He sits serenely waiting for me. I am late -- by how many minutes, I count. Into his proud 86th year he perceives time, both past and future, differently. I sense.

Smartly dressed in silky crimson replete with a matching neckerchief, he makes a statement: never shy about standing out and making his mark.

We sit down to talk. My eyes run a full circle around the house. This is a curated display of all things Rotary! Rows of framed photographs of smiling Rotarians at rousing events; souvenirs and awards given out at these events – spanning the decades. Honoring Prized Moments of a life-time. His endearing lovely daughter Isa shares : a mini-warehouse has been rented to house the rest of the collection.

Isa is herself steeped in Rotary. How else can it be? Rotary comes first always in this house: The family wants a gathering, the father checks the calendar – the Rotary calendar – for any clashes and Rotary events always take precedence. Such is the dedication and discipline!

Past District Governor Peter Hall, Walking Dictionary, Stalwart of Rotary traditions, Strict proctor of Rotary procedures and bye-laws, teacher, mentor, Advisor to successive District Governors, Advisor of Clubs, perfect attendance for 50 years and always arriving 12:30pm, author of the definitive History of District 3450 -- one of the most vibrant Districts in all of Rotary – much of which he not only witnessed but had a strong and direct hand steering. Uncle Peter, District 3450 salutes you!

Past President Amy Ho

7 53rd District Conference

To organize a District Conference is not an easy task. To organize a District Conference in China makes it at least twice harder. And yet, Members of the Organizing Committee for the 53rd District Conference demonstrated excellent team work to overcome numerous obstacles and managed to put together a fantastic program to make it a truly “Whole-In-One” Conference for all the participants and their family members at the in Dongguan, China between Friday April 19 and Sunday April 21, 2013.

The Pre-Conference activities started on Friday April 19, 2013 with a game of golf, few rounds of mahjong, visit to a manufacturer of high-tech semi-product and a museum at Tangxia followed by a BBQ dinner. These programs were just the appetizers of the Conference which promised to make a difference for everyone.

The opening ceremony and the business session on Saturday April 20 were packed by over 500 participants and Guests of Honor and Keynote Speaker included Rotary International (RI) President’s Personal Representative RI Past Director Jose Alfredo Pretoni from Brazil, Dr. Huang Jiefu, former Vice Minister of Health, China and Dr. Allan Zeman, Chairman of Lan Kwai Fong Holdings Ltd and Ocean Park Ltd.

The breakout sessions were also very popular. Panelists and participants shared their views and ideas on how to build stronger clubs while others discussed the way forward for the district’s organ donation project organized in conjunction with the Ministry of Health in China. There was also a presentation by the delegates returning from the Peace Forum recently held in Hawaii, USA. An unprecedented group photo of all the participants was taken at the outdoor Tournament Square after completion of the business sessions on the first day.

The Grand Ballroom was later converted in the evening from a business venue into a perfect stage for one of the greatest shows in recent years during the Governor’s Banquet. Zumba dancing girls in sparkling costumes, magic show, singing performance by an artist who used to perform in Las Vegas and the ballet dancing under spectacular lighting effect in front of the giant LED backdrop were some of the highlights of a most entertaining evening.

Business sessions resumed on Sunday morning when various district matters were discussed and resolutions were passed. District Governor Kenneth also delivered a detailed report on a number of projects accomplished by him http://webo.com.hk/download.php?i=201577 and his team since the start of the current Rotary year. The presentations by two distinguished guest speakers, Dr. Ken Chu, Chairman and CEO of Mission Hills Group and Professor Edward K Y Chen, former President of Lingnan University were both inspiring and educational. The power-points of all the Guest Speakers have already been posted up on the District Conference website: http://53dc.rotary3450.org.

8 The Foundation Lunch was held after the morning session to recognize donors while the Group Study Exchange team members and Ambassadorial Scholars were given the opportunity to share their background and experiences. Various Rotary youth groups presented their reports in the final plenary session in the same afternoon.

For spouses and family members, they were almost as busy as those participating in the business sessions as they were fully occupied by cake-making class, golf lesson and a sight-seeing tour over the weekend.

Feedback for the Conference this year was mostly complimentary but this would not be possible without the support from all the Clubs, sponsors and helpers from the family of both Rotary and Rotaract. In particular, the generous sponsorship from Mission Hills and their team’s “yes can do” culture really make the Conference an extraordinary one.

Last but not least, credits should also go to the Organizing Committee Team Members who have worked so hard since June 2012 to put together such a remarkable Conference for the District. Members of this MAD team are:

Ex-officio District Governor Kenneth Wong District Governor Elect Eugene Fong Chairman Past President (PP) K L Cheng Vice Chairman Assistant Governor Wendy Lee Secretary General PP Heman Lam Advisors: Past District Governor Anthony Hung PP Eddie Leung PP Claire Mak Members: District Secretary Peter Lam PP Wilson Lam PP Angela Hui PP Alexis Suen PP Heman Lam PP Peter Chu President Elect Francis Au Anne Mary Hung Past District Rotaract Representative (PDRR) Jovex Chan PDRR Virginia Seung

9 Past President KL Cheng District Conference Chair

Bravo! I learned only one word - Bravo! - from our Past Rotary International Director Jose Alfredo Pretoni during my short yet respectful encounter with him in our District Conference that took place in Mission Hills Golf Club at Dongguan, China on April 20 and 21, 2013.

I admired so much our fellow Rotarians who could join all the pre-Conference activities, particularly the golf games that took place in this world-renowned golf club.

I could not tell you which Conference Speaker was the best as they were all great --- that of Professor Huang Jiefu was very educational, that of Mr Allan Zeman was very inspiring, that of Dr. Ken Chu was very informative and that of Professor Edward KY Chen was very interesting and practical!

This was the first time I attended a conference in Mission Hills. My experience in hotel guest room, in food and beverage as well as in meeting and conference was world class and had completely exceeded my expectation - expectation as the Chief Operating Officer of an international hotel group.

When I first heard that the Conference was going to take place in PRC this RotaryYear, I did wonder how our Organizing Committee members could handle all the cross-border logistics. The smoothness and thoroughness of our District Conference reflected that we can host a conference anywhere as long as we can identify a capable conference chairperson and form a dedicated conference organizing committee.

Congratulations to District Governor Kenneth and your District Conference Organizing Committee on a Great Job Well Done! You have raised the bar and set very challenging standards for District Governor Elect Eugene, District Governor Nominee (2015/16) Peter and myself to organize our District Conferences in the future!

Belinda Yeung District Governor Nominee 2014/15

Fun The District Rotaract Fun Day was successfully held on April 7, 2013 at Dr. Stephen Hui Sports Hall, Hong Kong Baptist University. There were 12 teams, more than 150 Rotataractors from 19 Rotaract clubs participated in the activity. We were honored to have the presence of District Governor Kenneth Wong and District Rotaract Committee Chair Vincent Ng to support the event. It aimed to improve the fellowship among Rotaractors and provides a platform for Rotaractors from different clubs to know each other in a fun and relaxing atmosphere.

In order to achieve the ultimate goal, “Peace through Service”, the Rotary International theme this year, we hoped to enhance the harmony of Rotaract family as the first step. Energetic Rotaractors showed their team spirit in the mass games. A highlight of the day was the session “Minute to Win It”. Participants were required to complete a task within a minute and there were 20 tasks in total. They got different creative strategies in completing all the tasks. The session was exciting and many of them could finish the challenging tasks within a minute. It was an enjoyable afternoon and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all the participants for their enthusiastic participation.

BY Wong Deputy District Rotaract Representative

Journey to “Peace” In order to echo the 2012-13 Rotary year theme “Peace Through Service”, Rotary International District 3450 and its clubs sponsored 12 Rotaractors to participate in the Rotary Global Peace Forum held in Honolulu, Hawaii in January 2013.

To recap their experience and new thinking about “Peace”, District 3450 Peace Committee has assisted them to compile a Peace Forum Booklet for all our members to share their thoughts. This booklet also includes the historical role of Rotary in building world peace, Peace Declaration in Honolulu and what Daw Aung San Suu Kyi thought about “Peace”. Through this booklet, we hope our Rotarians will have some new perspectives of “Peace” in the eyes of young people and a famous “Peace” figure.

Please enjoy reading and give us feedback. http://rotary3450.org/peace-booklet-2013/
