    RESEARCH PROGRAMME 2013-2014 The Turkish Cypriots from the Ottoman era to the British colonial system (1856- 1931): from a Muslim-Ottoman to a Turkish Cypriot community The research project will be focusing on the Turkish Cypriots from 1856 to 1931, trying to illustrate the process through which, during these crucial years for the history of Cyprus, the island’s Muslim-Ottoman community is shaped into a Turkish Cypriot community. Research will be conducted along four main axes: 1. The 19th century “Ottoman modernity”. Its manifestation in Cyprus through the Tanzimat reforms, and its consequences (social, economic and political) for the Muslim-Ottoman community. The transition from an Ottoman power group to a “religious community”; 2. The first period of the implementation in Cyprus of “British modernity” (1878- 1914) and the deep transformations (both social and political) that it causes to the “Muslim-Ottoman community”. The two tendencies that develop within the community: on the one hand the Evkaf, as a carrier of a British-Ottoman modernization, and on the other hand a religious tendency, carrier of an Ottoman- Turkish modernization, with Istanbul as its centre of reference; 3. The second period of “British modernity” (1914-1925) and the social, political and demographic transformations that take place within the Muslim community. The gradual formation of a Turkish group within the community and the organization network developed by this group within the community. From an Ottoman-Turkish to a Turkish community; 4.     The Ghikas House on Hydra: From Artists’ Haven to Enchanted Ruins HELLE VALBORG GOLDMAN Norwegian Polar Institute We sat on the terrace under the starry sky and talked about poetry, we drank wine, we swam, we rode donkeys, we played chess—it was like life in a novel. (Ghikas, quoted in Arapoglou 56) Introduction The Greek island of Hydra has become known for the colony of expatriate painters and writers that became established there in the 1950s and 60s (Genoni and Dalziell 2018; Goldman 2018). Two ‘literary houses,’ the homes of several of the island’s most well-known foreign residents during that era—the Australian couple, writers George Johnston and Charmian Clift, and Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen—have become places of pilgrimage for aficionados of Australian literature and popular music. Visitors wend through the maze of car- less, stone-paved lanes, asking for directions along the way, in order to stand outside the objects of their quests. Standing in the small public courtyard in front of the Johnstons’ house, or the tight laneway fronting the Cohen house, there is not much to see—the houses are quiet, the doors closed, the stone and white-washed walls surrounding the properties, which are typical of Hydra, are high. This doesn’t keep people from coming. They can picture in their minds’ eyes what is on the other side of the walls, having seen photographs of the writers at work and leisure inside the houses, and having read the books and listened to the songs that were written while the Johnstons and Cohen were in residence.

    1 The following information has been supplied by the Greek Aliens Bureau: It is obligatory for all EU nationals to apply for a “Registration Certificate” (Veveosi Engrafis - Βεβαίωση Εγγραφής) after they have spent 3 months in Greece (Directive 2004/38/EC).This requirement also applies to UK nationals during the transition period. This certificate is open- dated. You only need to renew it if your circumstances change e.g. if you had registered as unemployed and you have now found employment. Below we outline some of the required documents for the most common cases. Please refer to the local Police Authorities for information on the regulations for freelancers, domestic employment and students. You should submit your application and required documents at your local Aliens Police (Tmima Allodapon – Τμήμα Αλλοδαπών, for addresses, contact telephone and opening hours see end); if you live outside Athens go to the local police station closest to your residence. In all cases, original documents and photocopies are required. You should approach the Greek Authorities for detailed information on the documents required or further clarification. Please note that some authorities work by appointment and will request that you book an appointment in advance. Required documents in the case of a working person: 1. Valid passport. 2. Two (2) photos. 3. Applicant’s proof of address [a document containing both the applicant’s name and address e.g. photocopy of the house lease, public utility bill (DEH, OTE, EYDAP) or statement from Tax Office (Tax Return)]. Otto’s reign was a momentous period for Greece, initially under Regency then under Otto as an absolute ruler and from 1843 as a constitutional monarch until his expulsion in 1862. Using the historical record the paper focuses on three political economy questions, namely, the rationale for the foundation of a state, which relates to the provision of public goods and rent distribution, the constitutional order of the state regarding the choice between monarchy or republic, and the emergence of democracy by revolution or evolution. Introduction An aspect of the ongoing multifaceted Greek debt crisis has been a strain in the relations between Greece and Germany, where members of the German cabinet have been caricatured as heartless fiscal disciplinarians and of the Greek cabinet as delinquent fiscal rule breakers. A moment’s calmer reflection reminds us that in modern times the relations between Greece and Germany have been long standing and steeped in mutual respect. A case in point is the reign of King Otto of Greece from the Bavarian royal house of Wittelsbach. Modern Greece rose formally as an independent nation state in 1832 with the seventeen year old Otto as its ruler. Otto was welcomed in Greece with jubilation.
