It’s the theory that geological scarcity will at some point make it impossible for global petroleum production to avoid falling, heralding the end of the oil age and, potentially, economic catastrophe. Well, just when we thought that the collapse in oil prices since last summer had put an end to such talk, along comes Fatih Birol, the top economist at the International Energy Agency, to insist that we’ll reach the peak moment in 10 years, a decade sooner than most previous predictions (although a few ardent pessimists believe the moment of no return has already come and gone). Like many Malthusian beliefs, peak oil theory has been promoted by a motivated group of scientists and laymen who base their conclusions on poor analyses of data and misinterpretations of technical material. But because the news media and prominent figures like James Schlesinger, a former secretary of energy, and the oilman T. Boone Pickens have taken peak oil seriously, the public is understandably alarmed. A careful examination of the facts shows that most arguments about peak oil are based on anecdotal information, vague references and ignorance of how the oil industry goes about finding fields and extracting petroleum. And this has been demonstrated over and over again: the founder of the Association for the Study of Peak Oil first claimed in 1989 that the peak had already been reached, and Mr. -

The petition aims to make fracking illegal within the boundary limits of Denton, which is believed to sit upon one of the largest natural gas reserves in the U.S. Currently, all oil and gas drilling is prohibited in the city, because the council voted in favor of a moratorium that will last until Sept. 9 of this year. If the city council ultimately adopts the permanent ban, Denton will become the first city in Texas to prohibit the practice. However, if the council votes against the ban, the initiative will likely find its way onto the ballot in November, allowing the public to decide the issue.[1] Fracking is the high-pressure injection of a mix of fluids and other substances into an oil or gas reservoir. The injection into the bottom of a well fractures the reservoir rock, unlocking hydrocarbons trapped in the reservoir formations. Other substances in the fracking fluid called “proppants” hold the cracks in the reservoir rock open Jeffrey D. Dintzer and allow the oil or natural gas to flow up and out of the reservoir through the well. Conventional fracking is a common practice that has been employed in oil and gas operations for over 60 years. -

Over 50% of the world oil production came from giants by 2005 and more than haft of the worlds ultimate reserves are found in giants. Based on this it is reasonable to assume that the future development of the giant oil fields will have a significant impact on the world oil supply. In order to better understand the giant fields and their future behaviour one must first understand their history. This study has used a comprehensive database on giant oil fields in order to determine their typical parameters, such as the average decline rate and life-times of giants. -

XI KAZENERGY EURASIAN FORUM: Securing the future of energy Opening Address Tor Fjaeran, President, World Petroleum Council Astana, 7th September 2017 Good morning your Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen and thank you to our hosts of the KazEnergy Eurasian Forum. During the last three months Astana has been the nexus of the energy world and has showcased the best approaches and solutions for Future Energy. The EXPO 2017 couldn’t have chosen a more important topic to focus on. Together with food and water, they form the basic building blocks for sustainable development. Sustainable development of the world requires access to safe, affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy sources. Long before the term “climate change” was even introduced, the World Petroleum Council has been dedicated to promoting the sustainable management and use of the world’s petroleum resources for the benefit for all. Since 1933 our mandate has been to provide a neutral platform to bring together the best minds in the industry with key decision makers to discuss the best way forward for all involved in oil and gas. We face a very different world today, but our original mandate still applies. In the last half-century, the global population has more than doubled. Life expectancy has risen from 50 to 70. GDP is more than 30 times what it was. And extreme poverty has been halved. It is an extraordinary transformation. And it is one in which energy has been vital, more than trebling in consumption since the 1960s. And this trend will continue. Over the next quarter of century, we are going to see: • A world economy that will double again in size. -

PUBLIC DISCLOSURE DOCUMENT Proposed Development Plan OPTI Canada Inc. & Nexen Inc. Long Lake Phase 2 SAGD Project July 2005 1.0 INTRODUCTION OPTI Canada Inc. and Nexen Inc. (OPTI/Nexen) are proposing to expand our Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) bitumen production at our Long Lake Project. This document has been prepared to inform you about our preliminary plans related to the proposed Long Lake Phase 2 SAGD Project (Phase 2). We encourage and welcome your input on this plan and your participation in the regulatory process. OPTI Canada and Nexen Inc. are joint-venture partners developing the Long Lake Project in the Athabasca oil sands region of northern Alberta. The Long Lake Project (Phase 1) is located on Lease 27, approximately 40 kilometres southeast of Fort McMurray, Alberta. Throughout the life of the Long Lake Project, we are committed to: • Understanding & addressing stakeholder concerns • Enhancing local employment & business development • Investing in communities to build capacity & self-sufficiency • Developing the Project in a safe & environmentally responsible manner Under the Memorandum of Understanding (IL 96-7) between the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) and Alberta Environment (AENV) with respect to Oil Sands Developments, OPTI/Nexen will be filing a joint application related to the Long Lake Phase 2 SAGD Project to amend the following approvals: • Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act Approval No. 137467-00-00 • Oil Sands Conservation Act Approval No. 9151 We view the consultation process for the OPTI/Nexen Phase 2 Project as building on an ongoing co-operative approach with stakeholders that addresses such regional issues as fresh water conservation and protection, and air quality management.
