Building on Bourdieu's notion of capita), the concept of magic capita) is introduced. Something comes to Iife through the media spotlight, resulting in it being publicly available, circulated, and celebrated. The fact that something is available to many people at once makes it appealing to individuals, who start projecting their energy and emotional commitment onto it. The subsequent hype and energy can be described as magic capital. As a form of capita) defined by media attention and presence in the public eye, magic capita) resides in the field of popular culture and is closely linked to economic capital. Rather than applying a set concept, the book is con cerned with getting to know magic capita), mapping out its substance on a theoretical as weil as an empirical level. Empirically the magic capita) is illustrared through two TV-shows, selling lifestyle, personalities, and music to media consumers in two different cultural contexts. Serving to illustrare the production of magic coming into play in various settings, the case studies demon strate how cultural values and beliefs are exploited to achieve financially convertible magic capital. Shedding light on the interplay between cultural values and symbolic and economic value, the book emphasizes the need for something to be perceived as valuable, for it to be able to function effectively in a market.
