Market Square in Krakow is paradoxically at the same time a typical example of medieval marketplace and a unique site. But the frontline between what is common and what is unique can be seen as “somewhat fuzzy”. Among these examples readers should observe a number of unexpected similarities, as well as sharp contrasts in terms of form, usage and layout of buildings. -

Although the work has long been attributed to Huibrecht Sporckmans (1619-1690) and dated 1660, the author reattributes it to the Antwerp painter Frans Denys (1610-1670) and gives evidence for a new date of 1648. Bodies Unseen: The Early Modern Anatomical Theatre and the Danse Macabre of Theatrical “Looking” Natalie Alvarez Brock University The struggle to “adapt” to the presence of the corpse serves as the central turning point for this investigation into the theatrical encounters with the corpse in the early modern anatomy theatre. Beginning with novelist W.G. Sebald’s claim, in The Rings of Saturn, that the art of anatomy was a way of “making the reprobate body invisible,” Alvarez queries how the corpse as the central “gure of this theatrical space challenges conventional modes of theatrical looking and how the particular viewing procedures invited by the anatomy theatre, as a theatrical space, effectively make the body “unseen.” Using Restoration diarist Samuel Pepys’ documented encounter with a corpse and the early phenomenologist Aurel Kolnai’s writings On Disgust, Alvarez attempts to account for the “perceptual and interpretive black hole” that the corpse presents in this schema. The corpse’s “radical actuality” and, paradoxically, its “surplus of life” act as a cipher that cuts through the virtual space constructed by the anatomical demonstration, undermining the gravitas of the scientific gaze that has acquired its weight in contradistinction to the theatricality of the event. But the corpse’s “radical actuality” and its “surplus of life” introduces a danse macabre of theatrical looking that moves between absorption and repulsion, reversing the otherwise consumptive gaze of the onlooker. Medical Education and Art de Bree E1, Tsiaoussis J2, Schoretsanitis G1 Abstract The Amsterdam Guild of Surgeons organized lessons in anatomy as part of the education of surgical trainees and surgeons. Appreciating that the acquisition of correct anatomical knowledge by regular perceptive education dur- ing dissection of the human body was essential for surgeons, in 1555 Philip II, King of Spain and Holland, gave his permission to the Amsterdam Guild of Surgeons to perform anatomical dissections on bodies of deceased humans. The anatomy instructors, called “praelectores anatomiae”, who were always academically educated medical doctors, were appointed by the guild for the teaching of anatomy. They commissioned painters to produce group portraits, with the “praelector anatomiae” delivering an anatomy lesson as the central figure. Probably the best-known of such paintings is the masterpiece of Rembrandt van Rijn (1632) "The anatomy lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp". Although these paintings are historical portraits rather than authentic pictures of an anatomical dissection, today this series of paintings of the Amsterdam Guild of Surgeons still reminds us of this essential part of the surgical training pro- gramme. While anatomy lessons on bodies of deceased humans was already an obligatory and crucial part of the medical (i.e., surgical) education in the 16th century, nowadays many medical schools unfortunately do not provide such practical anatomy lessons for their students, for whom usually only theoretical lessons and textbooks constitute the educational tools for learning human anatomy. The company calculates its age based on its oldest forerunner: Blaauwhoedenveem, which was active in the Amsterdam port in the early 17th century. When the ships of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) unloaded their wares here, the storehouses transported the goods to a weigh house, where they were inspected and weighed, and then on to warehouses. The city of Amsterdam mentioned the storehouses for the first time in an official regulation in 1616. Although it is plausible that Blaauwhoedenveem was already active before that time, Vopak regards this year as its founding year. The storehouses were organized in the carriers' guild. Until the abolition of this sys- tem in the 19th century, they functioned more or less in the same manner, although they even- tually also took the storage of goods in their own hands. Blaauwhoedenveem and Vriesseveem were among the most successful storehouses. In 1917, they merged into Blaauwhoedenveem- Vriesseveem, later called Blaauwhoed. Fifty years later, in 1967, Blauwhoed and Pakhuismeesteren joined forces and formed Pakhoed. At that time, Pakhuismeesteren had its own history going back a century and a half. -
