The film is produced by Williams and her husband, Independent Spirit Award winner and Sundance alum Neal Dodson (Margin Call). MEATS is an exploration of the ethics of meat-eating and the fears inherent with becoming a parent. In the short film, Williams plays Lane, who has hired a whole-animal butcher named Chris (played by real-life master butcher Giancarlo Sbarbaro), to educate her on how to responsibly break down a lamb and use every part. Upon arrival, Lane is simultaneously disgusted and mesmerized by the carcass in front of her. As Lane liberates the meat from the bone, she also frees a whole new side of herself, revealing humor, pain, connection, and a newfound mother-to-be. CounterNarrative Films presents MEATS. The cinematographer is Roman Vasyanov (Triple Frontier, Fury, Sundance alum with The East and Charlie Countryman). The editor is Cecilia Delgado. Color is by Roman Hankewycz (Sundance alum with Sound of Silence and Equity, among others) from Harbor Picture Company. Sound design is by three- time Academy-Award nominee Steve Boeddeker (All Is Lost, Black Panther, Sundance alum with I Origins, among others) at Skywalker Sound. -

Ethical Perspectives on Reality Television: Parenting Docu-Soaps, Makeover Shows, and Parodies of Reality Dating Programs
Ethical Perspectives on Reality Television: Parenting Docu-Soaps, Makeover Shows, and Parodies of Reality Dating Programs Benjamin John Healey BA (Honours), University of Queensland A thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2017 School of Communication and Arts Healey 2 Abstract This thesis argues that certain characteristics of reality television subgenres are likely to consistently produce ethical problems in programs belonging to those subgenres. Through the ethical analysis of cases studies from three subgenres of reality television, I also demonstrate the relative value of various normative ethical frameworks in analysing ethical problems in reality programming. I also argue that popular, non-academic criticisms of reality television act as implicit ethical judgements that align with formal criticisms from normative ethics. My first chapter addresses the ethical problems of informed consent, agency and representation in Extreme Guide to Parenting (Bravo 2014) and Toddlers & Tiaras (TLC 2008–13), two docu-soap programs that feature children. I find that a Kantian deontological perspective largely disapproves of children’s involvement in reality television, and these objections are echoed by similar arguments from documentary ethics. A perspective from the utilitarian arguments of Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill, conversely, may in some cases approve or disapprove of children’s participation in docu- soaps, depending on whether the production of these programs is seen to generally contribute to wider happiness. A utilitarian evaluation of the ethical goods and harms of docu-soaps production and reception has parallels with debates in documentary ethics over the function of documentary as a general public good. -

Tania Darlington Reviews: Unreal and the Faith Diaries
H-PCAACA Tania Darlington Reviews: UnREAL and The Faith Diaries Blog Post published by Sofia Zepeda on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 One of the most buzzed about new series of the Fall 2015 television season was the surprise Lifetime Network hit UnREAL, produced by former Buffy the Vampire Slayer writer/producer Marti Noxon and former Bachelor producer Sarah Gertrude Shapiro, whose short semi-autobiographical filmSequin Raze was the basis for the series. UnREAL, which interrogates the politics and production of women- centric programming, has been arguably the most successful part of the Lifetime network’s attempt to rebrand itself as a more self-aware, high-quality cable channel. A dark parody of the behind-the- scenes machinations of a Bachelor-like reality dating show called “Everlasting,” the series focuses on the lives of two of the show’s producers, Rachel, a young feminist whose ideals conflict with her uncanny ability to manufacture reality drama, and Quinn, a veteran exec who is beginning to realize that her own relationships are as manufactured as those she constructs on the series. While both compelling and often quite funny, UnREAL can be difficult for some viewers due to its consistently sardonic tone and its lack of conformity to a single television genre. It seldom leaves the viewer at ease, as every episode exposes the constructedness of our televisual reality and implicates viewer expectations in creating that constructedness. Within this framework, it interrogates televisual presentations of gender, race, and sexuality and how those presentations influence non- televisual reality – or whether there is a non-televisual reality at all. -

Musician Fred Ferguson gives a tour of downtown Nassau while describing the enduring impact of Bahamian folk music and icons such as Joseph Spence on the world's sound (Did you know, for example, that The Beach Boy's "Sloop John B" is a Bahamian folk song and that The Grateful Dead always ended their set with a song from The Bahamas?). They discover the important role The Bahamas played during the Calypso era from the 1940s to the 1960s, as well as its essential role in the history of funk, soul and disco. They then meet up with The Baha Men, whose song "Who Let The Dogs Out" was a worldwide smash.
