Together the team has directed numerous awardwinning feature films and advertisements and are some of the most soughtafter directors in the business. For the first time, Hyundai also announced the vehicles that will be featured in the ads. The company’s luxury sedan Genesis will be showcased in one spot, while the allnew 2017 Elantra, currently the company’s bestselling vehicle, will be introduced to the public in two separate ads. The directors working on Hyundai’s ads include: Peter Berg, Pony Show Productions The wellknown actor, director, writer and producer will be directing two Hyundai ads. Berg has an infallible eye for compelling visuals, an actor’s devotion to performance, and strikes the perfect balance between movie director and commercial director. He is known for directing films such as the dark comedy Very Bad Things (1998), the sports drama Friday Night Lights (2004), the action thriller The Kingdom (2007), the superhero comedydrama Hancock (2008), and the war film Lone Survivor (2013). He also developed the television series Friday Night Lights, which was adapted from the film he directed. Fredrik Bond, MJZ Productions As one of the most indemand directors in advertising, Bond is an expert in empathetic, characterdriven spots that create an emotional experience. Aaron Stoller and Janusz Kaminski, Biscuit Filmworks Stoller will be overseeing one of Hyundai’s ads and is an awardwinning television commercial director with an eye and storytelling abilities that span a wide range, from dramatic to comedy. This isn’t Stoller’s first time on Hyundai’s roster, as he directed the popular 2014 World Cup ad “Boom.” The 30second spot celebrated fan passion as a powerful force shedding light on the worldwide phenomenon of baby booms. Joining Stoller in directing the ad, Janusz Kaminski is a famous cinematographer and film director with a long list of notable work, including Academy Awards for greats like Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan. His imaginative film making and the ability to create an overall cinematic feel lent themselves perfectly to their Hyundai spot. “We collaborated with these worldclass directors to create what we think will be incredibly engaging and memorable ads,” said Dean Evans, chief marketing officer, Hyundai Motor America. “As we are finishing up shooting the spots, seeing their talent and skill in storytelling was inspirational to our entire team. We can’t wait to see the finished products.” Two of Hyundai’s ads will highlight the safety, technology and convenience features of the 2017 Elantra. With an allnew design, Elantra offers a stirring combination of advancements that make the car better in every way and a leader in the compact car segment. The vehicle features sophisticated styling, allnew efficient powertrains, better ride quality and comprehensive safety with classabove features. Another spot will showcase Hyundai’s premium sedan Genesis. Genesis boasts a modern design with sleek, luxury appointments. It offers outstanding driving dynamics, a generous suite of standard safety and convenience features and premium luxury technology and amenities. The fourth Hyundai Super Bowl ad will use compelling storytelling to highlight the core values of the brand and what Hyundai delivers to its consumers. Hyundai’s Super Bowl marketing program will include a total of four new ads. Hyundai will run two ingame 30second spots in the first and second quarters of the game. Hyundai also secured the coveted prekick slot and will run a new 60second ad as viewers are primed for the start of The Big Game. And that’s not all, as the pregame show will also feature another allnew 60second Hyundai spot. Hell's frozen over. Christmas is two weeks off, arid SNOW is falling in Gotham. Beneath its pristine white blanket, the city looks uncharacteristically serene -- almost inviting. Peace has been miraculously restored: strangers wave hello. Salvation Army Santas ring their bells on streetcorners. And now, as night falls, an ILLUMINATED SIGN winks on above Broad Avenue: "JOYEUX NOEL GOTHAM -- Only 16 Shopping Days Left Till Christmas." The streets are bustling with jolly shoppers. At a souvenir store, we find an exasperated MOM squabbling with her seven- year old. Like many other storefronts in Gotham, this one is overflowing with bootleg BATMAN MERCHANDISE: t-shirts, key chains, ceramic figurines. The kid is already wearing a Batman baseball cap and a little black cape, but he obviously wants more. Mom drags him off past another store window, this one full of SCRAP METAL, with a sign reading "AUTHENTIC FRAGMENTS OF THE BATWING -- $19.95 and up." A PANHANDLER is perched at the entrance. Beneath his array jacket is a grubby sweatshirt with the familiar yellow-and-black logo. In Gotham this winter, Batmania is everywhere... EXT. GOTHAM SQUARE - LATER THAT NIGHT Two hours later, the SNOWSTORM's grown into a full-fledged blizzard.

  • Popular Cultural Islamophobia
CHAPTER 4 POPULAR CULTURAL ISLAMOPHOBIA Muslim representations in Films, News Media, and Television Programs INTRODUCTION Thus far in the book, we have examined Islamophobia from a theoretical perspective, as well as how it manifests in political discourse, and policies and legislation in the context of the War on Terror. Negatively evaluated beliefs and perceptions of Muslims in the post-9/11 context have also been strongly influenced and informed by representations in popular cultural mediums such as film, news media, and television programs. The impact of media in the construction of race has been discussed in great detail by Stuart Hall (1996), as he states, “the media construct for us a definition of what race is, what meaning the imagery of race carries, and what the ‘problem of race’ is understood to be” (p. 161). Indeed, after 9/11 depictions of Muslim terrorists flooded TV and cinema screens reinforcing narratives in the news media about ‘dangerous Muslim men’ and ‘imperilled Muslim women’. This chapter examines Muslim representations in popular cultural mediums after 9/11. The reason I have devoted an entire chapter on analyzing Muslim representations in popular cultural mediums is because a number of people I interviewed for this book directly and unambiguously discussed how they felt the ‘media’ negatively portrayed Muslims and that these depictions have facilitated the growth of stereotypes of Muslims in Canadian society and secondary schools. This chapter examines the types of media that participants discussed in the interview process to demonstrate how these media have circulated the tropes of ‘dangerous Muslim men’, ‘imperilled Muslim women’, and Muslim cultures as being monolithic.

  • Twisted Trails of the Wold West by Matthew Baugh © 2006
Twisted Trails of the Wold West By Matthew Baugh © 2006 The Old West was an interesting place, and even more so in the Wold- Newton Universe. Until fairly recently only a few of the heroes and villains who inhabited the early western United States had been confirmed through crossover stories as existing in the WNU. Several comic book miniseries have done a lot to change this, and though there are some problems fitting each into the tapestry of the WNU, it has been worth the effort. Marvel Comics’ miniseries, Rawhide Kid: Slap Leather was a humorous storyline, parodying the Kid’s established image and lampooning westerns in general. It is best known for ‘outing’ the Kid as a homosexual. While that assertion remains an open issue with fans, it isn’t what causes the problems with incorporating the story into the WNU. What is of more concern are the blatant anachronisms and impossibilities the story offers. We can accept it, but only with the caveat that some of the details have been distorted for comic effect. When the Rawhide Kid is established as a character in the Wold-Newton Universe he provides links to a number of other western characters, both from the Marvel Universe and from classic western novels and movies. It draws in the Marvel Comics series’ Blaze of Glory, Apache Skies, and Sunset Riders as wall as DC Comics’ The Kents. As with most Marvel and DC characters there is the problem with bringing in the mammoth superhero continuities of the Marvel and DC universes, though this is not insurmountable.
