Vincenzo Bertolone sdP Primo di tre fratelli, Francesco Spoto nasce in una famiglia di profondi sentimenti cristiani l’8 luglio 1924 a Raffadali (Agrigento), dove è battezzato il 24 settembre nella Chiesa Madre e cresimato il 27 novembre 1932. Cresce buono, ubbidiente ai genitori, frequenta la parrocchia. Entrato nell’autunno del 1936 nel seminario della Congregazione del Beato Giacomo Cusmano, emette dopo 4 anni la prima professione religiosa e il 22 luglio 1951, a 27 anni, riceve l’Ordinazione sacerdotale dal Cardinale Ernesto Ruffini nel Santuario della Madonna dei Rimedi. Nel 1959 viene eletto Superiore Generale.Nella luminosa schiera dei sacerdoti vissuti nella terra di Sicilia a cavallo della metà del secolo scorso, in un periodo tra i più travagliati della storia e della società non solo europea, splende la figura del padre Francesco Spoto che il Santo Padre ha iscritto nell’Albo dei beati. L’arduo quadro di riferimento della sua epoca viene da lui vissuto con armoniosa capacità di sintesi di due modelli: quello del prete cosiddetto tridentino tutto ricompreso in una visione ecclesiologica caratterizzata dalla stretta obbedienza alla gerarchia, in primis al Romano Pontefice, e connotato prevalentemente da un impegno liturgico, catechetico e disciplinare; e quello emergente dal Concilio Vaticano II (aperto l’11 ottobre 1962), cioé del sacerdote tutto imperniato sulla figura di Cristo e sulla sua coscienziosa sequela, attento più alla cura pastorale, all’attività sociale e alla salus animarum che alle contrapposizioni dottrinali.

Con la perdita del Regno, l’Ordine Costantiniano non è più il “braccio armato” della Real Casa, ma è pur sempre un valido strumento che opera in campo assistenziale e culturale, da sempre legato alla Famiglia di Borbone di cui segue le direttive.

Frequentate le scuole elementari in paese, all’età di 12 anni, rispondendo alla chiamata di Dio, entrò nel seminario dei Missionari Servi dei Poveri (Bocconisti) di Palermo, per seguire la strada della “Carità senza limiti” tracciata dal beato Giacomo Cusmano. Dotato di intelligenza vivissima, si impegnò appassionatamente negli studi che compì con ottimi risultati presso il Seminario Arcivescovile di Palermo. Il 22 luglio 1951, fu ordinato sacerdote dal Cardinale Ernesto Ruffini nel Santuario della Madonna dei Rimedi (Palermo). Mentre si dedicava all’insegnamento – cui era stato destinato dai superiori svolgeva il ministero sacerdotale presso le Serve dei Poveri ed in qualche parrocchia della diocesi palermitana. Nel Capitolo del 1959 veniva eletto Superiore generale a soli 35 anni, con dispensa della Santa Sede. Appena cinque giorni dopo la sua elezione, consegnò il crocifisso e benedisse il confratello che si recava a Biringi, località del Congo, per aprirvi la prima missione bocconista della quale, da Palermo, Padre Spoto seguì la nascita, lo sviluppo, il consolidamento. Nell’agosto del 1964 decise di andare lui stesso a Biringi per confortare e sostenere i confratelli provati dai terribili eventi della guerra civile. Potendo scegliere tra il ritorno in Italia e la permanenza in missione, non esitò neppure un attimo e volle rimanere nella “catacomba verde” a condividere la passione dei confratelli.
