Lincoln University At the close of the Civil War, soldiers and officers of the 62nd United States Colored Infantry, stationed at Fort McIntosh, Texas, but composed primarily of Missourians, took steps to establish an educational institution in Jefferson City, Missouri, which they named Lincoln Institute. On January 14, 1866, Lincoln Institute was formally established under an organization committee, and on September 17, 1866, the school opened its doors to the first class. Today, Lincoln University’s role in the education of Missourians and others and its service to stakeholders throughout the state, the nation, and across the globe is well recognized. Lincoln University continues to serve the needs of its diverse student body through a tradition of offering innovative programs that make the college experience special. Lincoln, a land-grant institution, offers 50 learner- centered undergraduate degree programs; master’s degree programs in education, business and the social sciences; 50 registered student organizations, ranging from fraternities and sororities, to academic and professional affiliations; internship opportunities with local and national employers; and global-reaching research opportunities. Missouri State Penitentiary The Missouri State Penitentiary was a prison in Jefferson City, Missouri, that operated from 1836-2004. Part of the Missouri Department of Corrections, it served as the state of Missouri’s primary maximum security institution. Before it closed, it was the oldest operating penal facility west of the Mississippi River. It was replaced by the Jefferson City Correctional Center, which opened on September 15, 2004. The “More Talking, Less Walking” tour includes a stop in the upper yard, taking a seat in the oldest housing unit from 1868, hearing history and interesting stories of the inmates, touring the underground dungeon cells (optional, of course), seeing the cells, visiting the lower yard, and seeing the gas chamber.
