The Parish 1.1 Parish Church • Name of Parish Church: St. John Baptist • Approximate age of building: Tower dating from 1533, Nave - 1826, Chancel - 1906 • Approximately how many can the building seat? 350 1.2 Other Anglican Churches or Centres for Public Worship in the Parish • Name(s) with approximate age of building(s): St. Martin's Chapel within the Parish Hall Complex -1958; St. Peter's Chapel within St. Peter's Church of England Primary School - 1976. These worship centres are an integral part of the parish and were built as the area's population grew with the building of new houses in the Fulwood area of the parish. • Approximately how many can the building(s) seat? St. Martin's - 180; St. Peter's 90 • What is the approximate distance from the Parish Church? Each is within 1 mile of the parish church. 1.3 Population Details • Population of the Parish: 16,719: 8050 males, 8669 females (Census data – mid 2010) • Is the population increasing or decreasing? The population is set to increase substantially. • If so, to what extent? There are plans to build over 500 houses in the parish within the next 10 years . • How is the population distributed – in one or more centres or dispersed evenly over the Parish? The population is denser in the suburban (Fulwood) area of the parish than in the rural areas (Broughton). 1.4 Assistants • Please state number of stipendiary staff – lay or ordained – employed in the Parish: One incumbent. The Archdeacon of Lancaster assists and one Associate Clergyman is assigned to the parish temporarily. • Are there any Self-Supporting Clergy attached to the Parish? No. • Are there any retired clergy living in the Parish who give regular or occasional help? One retired clergyman assists in the parish and another is assisting during the Interregnum only. 1 • Does the Parish have any licensed Readers? There are 3 Readers with one in training. • Does the Parish have authorised Pastoral Assistants? If so, how many? There are two Pastoral Assistants, one of whom is training to be a Deacon. • Are there any lay people authorised by the Bishop to take Holy Communion to the sick? One Reader, two Pastoral Assistants and one lay person are authorised to take Holy Communion to the sick. 1.5 Electoral Roll • How many names are at present on the Electoral Roll of the Parish? 553 • Approximately what proportion of these are resident outside the Parish? 158 Non resident 395 Resident 1.6 Priests (Ordination of Women) Measure 1993 • What was the PCC decision on deciding whether to pass a resolution under Section 3 (1) or (2) of the Priests (Ordination of Women) Measure 1993? (Please include the voting figures.) Both Resolution A and Resolution B under Section 3 (1) or (2) were rejected unanimously by the PCC on 4th March 2013. Broughton Parish will accept applications from women priests. 2. Buildings and Land 2.1 Parish Church • What is the general state of repair of the Parish Church? The parish church recently completed a restoration programme costing £207,290 paid for by parish contributions supplemented by a grant from English Heritage. The Parish Church is in an excellent state of repair. • Please detail any major work which has been carried out on the Parish Church during the last five years: 2008 – Repairs to Nave Roof 2009 – Extensive repairs to the Tower 2009 – Tree, shrubs and bulbs planted along Blundel Brook 2010 – Internal plaster repairs and complete redecoration to Nave, Chancel & Sanctuary 2010 – Replacement central heating system installed in the choir vestry / meeting room 2011 – Complete resurfacing of the churchyard footpaths and provision of a second disabled access 2011 – Installation of a complete roof security system 2012 – Installation of Flue liner to central heating boiler chimney • Is all the work which the Report of the most recent Quinquennial Inspection recommends either completed or in hand? (If no, please outline what remains to be done): Latest Report dated August 2012. Following on from the 5 year Restoration Project a small amount of work is required. Any “urgent” work identified has been completed. • Is there anyone who is responsible for opening up or for the care-taking of the Church? This is normally undertaken by the vicar when taking Morning and Evening prayer within the church. The Church is open during the daytime. • Are Health and Safety requirements adhered to? Yes • Is there access for the disabled? Yes, 2 entrances and a disabled accessible toilet. 2 2.2 Other Anglican Churches or Centres for Public Worship in the Parish • What is their general state of repair? The Parish Hall Complex where St. Martin's Chapel is located (see below) is in a good state of repair and meets all requirements for its use as a community centre. St. Peter's Chapel is within St. Peter's School and also in a good state of repair. • Please detail any major work which has been carried out during the last five years. 2009 – Installation of a cctv security system 2009 -- 10 – Creation of a Parish Office within the existing building 2009 – Complete interior redecoration of the Hall and Chapel 2009 – Complete renewal of the two main toilet areas 2011 – Replacement of 186 plastic chairs for banqueting style chairs / 2012 – Tables replaced 2012 – Installation of low energy car park lighting and replacement of internal light fittings for low energy type 2012 – Installation of external toilets for use of Bowling Club members 2012 – 13 Repairs / reinforcement of roof beams above the stage area • Are Health and Safety requirements adhered to? Yes • Is there access for the disabled? Yes 3 entrances and a disabled accessible toilet. 2.3 Church Hall • What Church Halls or other parochial buildings are there? Please give a brief description of them including their age: The Parish Hall complex , located between Broadway and Northway, Fulwood, was built in 1958. As well as St. Martin's Chapel within the main hall (which can be separated via folding wooden doors), there are the following spaces: a main hall seating 180 with stage, a servery area, a lounge with licensed bar operated by the Church Club, another large function room which can be separated from the bar area, changing areas for the stage, The Hoggarth Room (which is the church administrative office), toilets, including disabled access, a bowling green and garden plus a car park with the capacity for 40 cars. • What is their general state of repair? Good. • Who is responsible for care-taking and opening up? There are two paid, part-time Managers and the Parish Hall Complex is managed by the Land and Buildings/Parish Hall Management Committee. • What proportion of the running costs is offset by lettings? There are 25 external lettings and the Parish Hall Complex breaks even after general maintenance work has been paid for. • Are Health and Safety requirements adhered to? Yes • Is there access for the disabled? Yes 2.4 The Churchyard (if there is one) • What is its general condition? The churchyard is in good condition. A Gravestone and Monument safety survey carried out in 2012. There has been a recent tree and shrub planting scheme and in 2001 construction of a new Garden of Remembrance for the burial of ashes. Are burials still taking place within it? Infrequently, only in existing graves. There is a Garden of Remembrance for the burial of caskets as well as the new Garden of Remembrance. • Who is responsible for its maintenance? A Team of 9 Parish volunteers. The parish church also shares a car park with the Church School across fields which holds 35 cars. 3 2.5 The Parsonage House • What is the age of the house? The Vicarage was built in 1886. • What is its general state of repair? Good. The Vicarage is approached through a wooded avenue and has extensive grounds and outbuildings. It overlooks Glebe Land and the Church from an elevated position. It has four bedrooms, a bathroom, plus attic, gas central heating, lounge, dining room, large kitchen, office, utility room and downstairs cloakroom. There are various outbuildings / garages. • Please detail any major work which has been carried out on it during the last five years: (Responsibility of Blackburn Diocesan Property Committee) Central Heating Boiler replaced. A number of window frames replaced, North main roof rebuilt. • What additional work on the Parsonage House is planned? (Responsibility of Blackburn Diocesan Property Committee) • Is all the work which the Report of the most recent Quinquennial Inspection recommends either completed or in hand? If no, please outline what remains to be done. (Responsibility of Blackburn Diocesan Property Committee)It is believed that a Quinquennial Inspection is due to take place. 2.6 Other Buildings and Land • Does the PCC own any other buildings or land, not already mentioned? The parish owns a 3-bedroom house with office close to the Parish Hall complex. This is currently let to a tenant on a short hold tenancy. In addition, next to the parish church there is a fully restored, listed, Tudor cottage owned by Broughton C. of E. Primary School and used as an educational facility and open to the public on Sunday afternoons (Church Cottage Museum). Guide Building next to the Parish Hall is on land owned by the PCC and leased to the Guides Association. 2.7 Parish Office • Is there a Parish Office? If so, where is it situated and what is it equipped with? There is a Parish Office within the Parish Hall Complex equipped with Broadband / answer- phone / cctv equipment / meeting area.

    Autumn 2016 Welcome to our latest edition of the ‘Communiqué’ from Archbishop Temple School. A message from the Headteacher Dear Parent/Carer, Houghton, and Lisa McManus to be our events and media officer. This new school year has proved to be every bit as busy as previous years at Archbishop We also wish to extend our congratulations to Temple School. Mrs Smith on the birth of her son, Austin, and Mr Charlton whose partner had a little girl, We’ve been delighted to welcome 157 new Nola, on 17th October. pupils into Year 7 in September. We had an incredible 805 applications for places in Year 7 and over 90 appeals. I am overwhelmed by the confidence this shows in the school by members of our community. The new pupils have settled in very well, and feel like they’ve been part of the Archbishop Temple family for ever. We do wish them five happy and successful years with us. In addition to new pupils we’ve welcomed several new teachers: Ms Victoria Walsh – subject leader for History Ms Kirsten Ryder – ICT and Maths Ms Jessica Cross – Chemistry Ms Katy McKenna – PE and Science On 9th September we welcomed Dr John Ms Debbie Walsh – Food Technology and Sentamu, the Archbishop of York, to the school Textiles to cover Mrs Smith’s maternity and had a lovely cover morning with him.
