Mielke Date Approved: 2 May 2019 ii Abstract Rough Forms analyzes U.S. Western autobiographies from 1835 to 1935, focusing especially on ways that Native and non-Native authors complicate settler-colonial narratives. In doing so, my project deeply engages with two interrelated questions: “What kinds of stories does the settler tell?” (to quote Alan Lawson) and “What kinds of stories does society tell about the settler?” Settler-colonial theory describes the process through which settlers physically and narratively displace Native peoples. Scholars such as Alan Lawson and Margaret Jacobs typically use this theory to demonstrate how Anglophone authors and historical figures ignore or erase Native traditions. Over an introduction and four chapters, I prove that settler-colonial theory applies to a range of autobiographical texts, including works by Jotham Meeker (a Euro- American missionary and diarist), George Bent (a Southern Cheyenne warrior-writer), Robert and Daisy Anderson (African American homesteaders and self-publishers), and Alice Gossage (a Euro-American newspaperwoman and diarist). The dynamic local figures that I study share networks with and often respond directly to better known American authors such as Charles Eastman, Booker T. Washington, and Hamlin Garland, but scholars have not yet considered their writings together in order to deepen our literary history of the U.S. West. By linking traditional settler narratives, efforts to recover Native agency, defenses of women’s rights and writing, and studies of alphabetic, visual, material, and spatial literacies, Rough Forms crucially reframes U.S. Western autobiographical texts as dynamic sites of cultural and textual exchange whose authors uniquely establish and/or complicate regional belonging. Far from being merely of local interest, their dynamic intercultural and multiformal texts greatly increase our understanding of nineteenth- and early-twentieth century American literary studies by critiquing settler-colonial erasure and providing vibrant archives of resistance rarely seen in more canonical works. iii Acknowledgments I could fill a whole dissertation with gratitude for my truly incredible network of family, friends, and mentors.     North Pork Town NORTH FORK TOWN By Carolyn Thomas Foreman North Fork Town was a well known settlement in the Indian Territory before the building of the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Rail- road in 1872. A number of prominent men made the place their home; it was the seat of one of the most useful missions amoug the Creeks; the mercantile establishments there were well stocked and prosperous. Among the Creeks who emigrated in 1829 to the West was John Davis, a full-blood who had been a pupil of the Reverend Lee Com- pere. When a boy Davis was taken prisoner in the War of 1812, and reared by a white man. Educated at Union Mission after coming to the Indian Territ.ory, be was appointed as a missionary by the Bap- tist Board in 1830. After Davis was ordained October 20, 1833, he assisted the Reverend David Rollin in establishing schools; hls preaching was said to have been productive of much good. He fre- quently acted as interpreter, and he worked at Shawnee Mission with Johnston Lykins in the preparation of Creek books. Jotham Meeker noted the arrival of Davis and the Reverend Saaipson Burch, a Choctaw from Red River, at Shawanoe on May 2, 1835. They had come at the invitation of Lykins to print some matter on the new system originated there by Meeker. They re- mained at the mission about three months; Davis compiled a school book in Creek and translated into that language the Gospel of John. On May 5 Meeker, assisted by Davis, began forming the Creek alphabet; four days later Davis took his manuscript to the press and on the eleventh Meeker and Davis revised it.

Born in 1916 in Minnesota, Helen is known as an expert on Native American history and Native rights. Among her many books and articles, Helen's most far-reaching work is the Atlas of Great Lakes Indian History, which has been called "the only accurate mapping of Native American tribes." Since 1962 the Beulah resident has served as an expert witness in 16 cases before the Indian Claims Commission, brought by several tribes throughout the United States. Helen considers her most important service her work in the United States v. the State of Michigan, in support of Native American fishing rights in the Great Lakes. Helen was charged with summarizing all the historical evidence concerning Native American fishing. Isaac McCoy was one of the leaders in this movement. We might call him the Judson in America among the tribes in Michigan and the central states. He did a most noble work among them. It was when he was stationed at Thomas Station in Michigan he became sorely pressed for helpers, and teachers in his work, he prevailed upon Mr. Meeker to come and assist him.

    A HOLY BAT Methodist, Baptist, & Among Shawnee by Kevin Abing n October 1834 the Shawnee Indi- ans held a full tribal council on their reserve in present-day east- ern Kansas. After much delibera- Ition, the gathering demanded that gov- ernment officials remove all Methodist and Baptist missionaries working among the tribe. The reasons for the council’s decision were not defined, but many members undoubtedly resented the missionaries’ attempts to convert them to Christianity. No less disturbing, however, was the incessant squabbling between the Methodists and Baptists. The cultural struggle between Na- tive Americans and Christian missionar- ies is a story that frequently has been told. Less known is the interdenomina- tional strife that all too often character- Kevin Abing earned his Ph.D. from Marquette Uni- versity in 1995. His dissertation was a study of the Shawnee Indian Manual Labor School.     Steve Abney CLD: Software for analysis of Anishinaabemowin texts and recordings This is a preliminary report on a software application called CLD that is under development for computa- tional language documentation and description (whence the name), with intended extensions in language instruction, language technology, and linguistic studies. As a design strategy, the software is being developed concurrently with its use in analyzing and annotating texts and recordings in Anishinaabemowin. The software can run either on one's personal computer or at a remote location (as a CGI script or as a standalone web server). The software is open source and freely available from the author's website. The current implementation covers only the essentials of audio and text entry and annotation. I will present the editing interfaces or panels that constitute the application by walking through the typical work- flow. The panels correspond to numbered items in the following. Audio transcription. (1) One can provide a digital audio recording, and CLD will automatically divide it into snippets, finding a heuristic balance between the lengths of the snippets and the appropriateness of the cut points: snippets are roughly 5{15 syllables (1{2 seconds) long and cut points represent energy minima of significant duration (at least 100 ms). (2) A panel is provided for listening to and transcribing snippets. Text and translation. The concatenated snippet transcriptions represent a written text. (3) A panel is also provided to input texts directly, in case the original material is written rather than spoken. A text may be divided into translation units for convenience of analysis.

    International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Vol. 3 No. 4 [Special Issue – February 2013] Religion and Removal among the Shawnee from Ohio into Kansas Brady DeSanti, PhD Assistant Professor Religious Studies, Native American Studies University of Nebraska at Omaha 6001 Dodge Street, Arts and Science Hall 205, USA Abstract This article examines the removal of the Shawnee from their traditional homelands in Ohio and Indiana into “Indian Territory” (Kansas and Oklahoma) from 1824-1832. The displacement of the Shawnee caused them great hardship and exacerbated preexisting divisions within their community. These challenges impacted every facet of Shawnee life, but one overlooked theme has been the religious dimensions of their removal experiences. Those Shawnee factions that wished to maintain traditional ways of life resisted white encroachment into their homelands and opposed missionary attempts to convert them to Christianity. This conflict pitted so-called traditionalists against some leaders open to allowing Christian missionaries into Shawnee life, finding it a necessary part of adjusting to American civilization. Denominational rivalries also developed among the missionaries, as they vied for the most influence over the federal government’s policy toward the Shawnee. While many Europeans and Americans engaged in reciprocal trade relations with a wide and diverse array of Native societies, rapid population increase, settler demand for land, and market growth encouraged Indian removal and dispossession.
