While Tappin' Thru Life does have some flaws, it's hard to find anyone who isn't won over by Hines showmanship, humor, timing and above all else, talent.” In The Washington Post, Nelson Pressley wrote, “’Tappin’ is basically a breezy, personable concert. The show doesn’t flinch from hard-core nostalgia; the heart-on-his-sleeve Hines is too sentimental for that. It’s frankly schmaltzy, and it’s barely written — it zips through selected moments of Hines’s life, creating a mood more than telling a story. it’s a pleasure to be in the company of a shameless, ebullient vaudeville heart.” Maurice Hines Is .

Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} The Peter Lawford Story Life with the Kennedys Monroe and the Rat Pack by Patricia Lawford Stewart The Tragic History Of The Rat Pack. The Rat Pack is the epitome of Mad Men- style old-school cool. As Colin Bertram of Biography tells us, the legendary group of entertainers were originally acquaintances who used to hang around at Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall's home in Los Angeles. Before their most famous line- up, they had a Who's Who list of satellite members that included David Niven, Spencer Tracy, and Robert Mitchum. They were by no means a "men only" club, either: Early on, legendary ladies such as Ava Gardner, Judy Garland, Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn counted themselves in the group's ranks. In fact, the Rat Pack didn't even really want to be one. They actually liked to be called "The Summit" or "The Clan." Still, regardless of their full list of members or original naming aspirations, history has come to know the group as the Rat Pack, and Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop are considered its core members. As effortlessly awesome as the group appeared to be, there was actually a lot of turmoil and sadness behind the scenes. Today, we'll take a look at the tragic history of the Rat Pack. Peter Lawford's right hand. If you're hard-pressed to name an iconic Peter Lawford movie, you probably won't be alone. Though his IMDb page shows that his acting career was lengthy and impressive, his entry on the Hollywood Walk of Fame website tells us that Lawford also had a couple of other things playing in his favor.

BACKGROUND: Frank Sinatra is among the twentieth-century's greatest popular performers. He drew on several influences, including Bing Crosby’s crooning, trombonist Tommy Dorsey’s breath control, and blues singer Billie Holiday’s rhythmic swing, but is principally credited with the concept of singing colloquially, or treating lyrics as personal statements and handling melodies with the ease of a jazz improviser. While many associate Sinatra with Palm Springs and Las Vegas, he was first and foremost a Jersey boy. Born in Hoboken on December 12, 1915, the only child of Italian immigrants, he sang in the glee club of Demarest High School.

Starrtext.qxd 8/7/02 9:16 AM Page 30 4 CHAPTER “Sinatra's Comic” t was now 1952 and Joey was wondering if he would ever be more than a pretender to the throne. He was earning a decent living Iworking the clubs, but there had to be more. He was beginning to develop a love-hate relationship with the lifestyle—loving the money he earned (he was now up to $1,000 a week) but hating the travel and loneliness that came with the territory. “There isn’t a lonelier life in the world,” he said later. “I was always a stranger in town.” Out in Hollywood, Frank Sinatra was in the midst of his spec- tacular comeback, filming From Here to Eternity. The onetime Bobby Soxer idol had seen his career nearly destroyed, first by losing his voice and then by leaving his wife for Hollywood sexpot Ava Gardner. Sinatra’s tempestuous relationship with Gardner had alien- ated his fans, and a string of forgettable movies hadn’t helped Sinatra’s cause. But his role as the doomed Maggio in From Here to Eternity would earn Sinatra an Oscar and single-handedly resuscitate his career. Just a year before he had been performing for half-empty crowds in Vegas and begging for TV work; now, he was selling out the Paramount. It was 1942 all over again. Sinatra was unstoppable. Joey had always admired Sinatra from afar. Who didn’t? Although they had never worked together on the same bill, Joey and Frank had played some of the same clubs through the years, sometimes missing each other by a matter of days or weeks.
