Research Golden Harvest and the Generational Change in 1970s Hong Kong Cinema Po Fung The 1970s were a period of pivotal transitions in Hong Kong cinema. It was also the era of Golden Harvest, from its birth to becoming the main pillar of the film industry. In changing times, Golden Harvest had the flexibility to move with the times, but on the other hand its success came from it spearheading much of the change. Looking at the changes in the company itself, one can see some of significant movements in Hong Kong cinema back then. • Healthy Realism: Paradoxical Aesthetics, Ideology, and Nation- Building in Taiwan Cinema 1964-1982
HEALTHY REALISM: PARADOXICAL AESTHETICS, IDEOLOGY, AND NATION- BUILDING IN TAIWAN CINEMA 1964-1982 BY MEI- HSUAN CHIANG DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in East Asian Languages and Cultures in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Gary G. Xu, Chair Associate Professor Jose B. Capino Associate Professor Robert Tierney Professor Kai-Wing Chow Abstract This dissertation focuses on Healthy Realist Film Movement (jiankang xieshi dianying) and its influence on Taiwan cinema from 1964 to the rise of New Taiwan Cinema in 1982. Healthy Realism was first introduced to Taiwan film industry in 1964 by the Central Motion Picture Corporation (CMPC), a studio owned by the Chinese nationalist party, or the so- called Kuomintang (KMT). It claims lineage to postwar Italian Neorealist films, but purposely avoids realism’s dark and pessimistic themes. Current scholarship has often interpreted Healthy Realist Film as the KMT government’s propaganda tool; however, the historical approach tends to overlook the subversive voices and the melodramatic expressions exhibited in the actual film texts. Therefore, drawing on western melodrama study and feminist film theories, this project departs from previous scholarship to examine the melodramatic mode in Healthy Realist Film. It argues that the melodramatic mode was employed to reconstruct the postwar social order, and, at the same time, to provide an auto- critique of the cultural policies and social values proposed by the KMT government. This dissertation is consisted of four core chapters, each investigating the transformation of Healthy Realism at different stages during the 1960s and the 1970s.

  • Chinese National Cinema
CHINESE NATIONAL CINEMA What does it mean to be ‘Chinese’? This controversial question has sparked off a never-ending process of image-making in Chinese and Chinese-speaking communities throughout the twentieth century. This introduction to Chinese national cinema, written for scholars and students by a leading critic, covers three ‘Chinas’: mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. It traces the formation, negotiation and problematization of the national on the Chinese screen over ninety years. Historical and comparative perspectives bring out the parallel developments in the three Chinas, while critical analysis explores thematic and stylistic changes over time. As well as exploring artistic achievements and ideological debates, Chinese National Cinema also emphasizes industry research and market analysis. The author concludes that despite the rigid censorship systems and the pressures on filmmakers, Chinese national cinema has never succeeded in projecting a single unified picture, but rather portrays many Chinas. Yingjin Zhang is Professor of Chinese, Comparative Literature, and Cultural Studies at the University of California-San Diego. His publications include Screening China (2002) and Routledge’s Encyclopedia of Chinese Film (1998) which he co-authored and edited with Zhiwei Xiao. • Contemporary Pan-Chinese Cinematic Urbanism in Taiwan and Hong Kong
Contemporary Pan-Chinese Cinematic Urbanism in Taiwan and Hong Kong By Ying-Fen Chen A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Architecture in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Margaret L. Crawford, Chair Professor Greig Crysler Professor Weihong Bao Summer 2019 Abstract Contemporary Pan-Chinese Cinematic Urbanism in Taiwan and Hong Kong by Ying-Fen Chen Doctor of Philosophy in Architecture University of California, Berkeley Professor Margret L. Crawford, Chair After World War II, Chinese films shot in Taiwan and Hong Kong began to play a significant role constructing and disseminating images of Chinese culture and its urban environments to pan-Chinese regions of the world and beyond. To comprehend the relationship between those Chinese films and their urban settings, particularly in Taipei and Hong Kong, numerous scholars in the field of Chinese cinematic urbanism engaged in analyses of the highly aestheticized spatial representations in the films, as well as on the cultural negotiation of Chineseness within a context of political tension, and the issues arising from the rapid capitalization of Chinese cities. However, from the 1990s, the global popularity of Hollywood movies threatened the film industry both in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Concurrently, Mainland China rose in stature to supplant Taiwan and Hong Kong as the seat of political, economic, and cultural “Chineseness”. To respond to these changes, film industry executives in Taiwan and Hong Kong began to seek new ways to survive, sparking a process in which the relationship between cities and the film industries grew more complex.
