“IT’S THE FEELINGS I WEAR”: BLACK WOMEN, NATURAL HAIR, AND NEW MEDIA (RE)NEGOTIATIONS OF BEAUTY By Kristin Denise Rowe A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of African American and African Studies—Doctor of Philosophy 2019 ABSTRACT “IT’S THE FEELINGS I WEAR”: BLACK WOMEN, NATURAL HAIR, AND NEW MEDIA (RE)NEGOTIATIONS OF BEAUTY By Kristin Denise Rowe At the intersection of social media, a trend in organic products, and an interest in do-it-yourself culture, the late 2000s opened a space for many Black American women to stop chemically straightening their hair via “relaxers” and begin to wear their hair natural—resulting in an Internet-based cultural phenomenon known as the “natural hair movement.” Within this context, conversations around beauty standards, hair politics, and Black women’s embodiment have flourished within the public sphere, largely through YouTube, social media, and websites. My project maps these conversations, by exploring contemporary expressions of Black women’s natural hair within cultural production. Using textual and content analysis, I investigate various sites of inquiry: natural hair product advertisements and internet representations, as well as the ways hair texture is evoked in recent song lyrics, filmic scenes, and non- fiction prose by Black women. Each of these “hair moments” offers a complex articulation of the ways Black women experience, share, and negotiate the socio-historically fraught terrain that is racialized body politics

The persistently elevated level of layoffs are occurring as a spike in virus cases has forced six states to reverse their move to reopen businesses. Prince-Bythewood, selected by Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas for the honor, grew up in Los Angeles and attended UCLA where she studied at the film school and also ran competitive track. At UCLA, she received the Gene Reynolds Scholarship for Directing and the Ray Stark Memorial Scholarship for Outstanding Undergraduates. Her first film, Love & Basketball, now on 15 years, is a date night favorite that has been lauded for its honesty about love and relationships. Her other films include The Secret Life of Bees, Disappearing Acts and most recently, Beyond the Lights. The Women of the Year luncheon, sponsored by the Los Angeles County Commission for Women, honors the work of women throughout Los Angeles County in a variety of professions. This year’s honorees also included Jessica Midkiff, a survivor of child sex trafficking who is now working at the Probation Department as a mentor and counselor to young victims. At the ceremony, Supervisor Ridley-Thomas applauded Prince-Bythewood’s career and her unwavering spirit to make films that are diverse and feature prominent female roles. “Her films show the goodness in people, the complexity of humanity and the ability to overcome,” said Supervisor Ridley-Thomas.

Some elusive, others printed indelibly on the brain.” —Kasi Lemmons, Eve’s Bayou (1997) hen we fi rst began to assemble this In Focus on black media, our excitement was quickly tempered by the enormity of the undertaking.1 Should the essays focus on mainstream or in- dependent media? Would the contributors emphasize texts, pedagogy, or research? To what extent should we address issues of Widentity facing not only this type of scholarship but also the scholars themselves? Ultimately, we decided to take on all these questions, using Stuart Hall’s provocation “What Is This ‘Black’ in Black Popular Cul- ture?” as both prompt and connective thread. Written in 1992, Hall’s essay still carries particular resonance for this contemporary moment in media history. Hall makes it clear that issues of identity, represen- tation, and politics will always converge around blackness. Further, Hall’s own academic background reminds us that, as a fi eld, black media studies has always drawn on discourses and scholarship from multiple academic disciplines. Fall 2020 RTF 370: Black Filmmakers After “Blaxploitation” WB Instructor: Adrien Sebro Email: [email protected] Seminar Day anD Time: TTh 2:00PM-3:30PM Office Hours: Thursdays 1-2PM or by appointment Course Description: May it be the Harlem Renaissance, The L.A. Rebellion, or Blaxploitation, there has existed various U.S. arts movements with Black artists and Black culture at their center. Blaxploitation is a term coined in the early 1970s to refer to Black action films that were aimed at Black audiences. Featuring Black actors in lead roles and often having anti-establishment plots, these films were frequently condemned for stereotypical characterizations and the glorification of violence. The films, though receiving backlash for their stereotypical characters, are among the first in which Black characters and communities are the heroes and subjects of film and television, rather than sidekicks or villains or victims of brutality. The genre’s inception coincides with the rethinking of race relations in the 1970s. Blaxploitation films were originally aimed at an urban Black audience, but the genre’s audience appeal soon broadened across racial and ethnic lines. Hollywood soon realized the potential profit of expanding the audiences of Blaxploitation films across those racial lines. But what was to come after this movement? How can we label contemporary Black filmmakers and their works of art? Presently, with the robust number of Black filmmakers across Hollywood, what are the new ways in which Blackness is framed across dominant Hollywood cinema, independent film, animation, television, and experimental film? With this course we will use case studies of various contemporary Black filmmakers (1980s-Present) while working to question and complicate the ways in which they deploy images, understandings, and narratives of Blackness within American society.
