The Bishop’s Corner – Bishop Varden on Interior Life My Dear Fellow-Catholics:

The modern world has lost the importance of an internal spiritual life, and thus the language needed to talk about it. In each person, however, there is still a deep desire for transcendence. This is indicated by the Norwegian Trappist , born into a non-practicing Lutheran family, who was brought into the by sacred music.

Erik Varden is currently Bishop of the Territorial Prelature of , . His ordination at the Trondheim Cathedral was an historic event, as no Catholic bishop had been ordained there since the in 1537. The 46-year-old monk is the author of many books on spirituality, prayer and Gregorian chant. He also reflects on the present state of Christianity and the most important questions that modern-day persons ask themselves. The Trappist emphasizes that questions about wisdom and meaning, push people to many meditation practices in which Christian silence is replaced by silenc e without God. In such radical examinations, he emphasizes, only the feeling of loneliness is deepened, while in Christianity silence is an "emergency" preparing for a meeting with God, as like the prophet Elijah on Mount Horeb. "The silence of a monk does not mean self-isolation, but a space focused on seeking communion," emphasizes Bishop Varden.

The Norwegian Trappist points out and emphasizes that Christian understanding implies the possibility of acceptance that we do not have answers to all possible questions. This is in contrast to what is served by a world overwhelmed with a mania of making certain and secure all things: life, work, love. “However, life is a risk, and Jesus himself says it, announcing that following him has its price, but leads to real freedom that brings joy.” He points out that "meanwhile, our society is obsessed with a false security that breeds only anxiety, more conclusions and sadness." Bishop Varden further emphasizes that the modern person, although he/she is not fully aware of it, desperately wants a deepened inner life. However, he has lost the language that can speak about it and its recovery is one of the challenges on the way of discovering and deepening one's own spirituality.

Enjoy your weekend and have a blessed week!

January 24 - Sunday of the Word of God: ‘A Day of Awakening’ (Excerpt from : 19 December 2020, 12:22)

Pope Francis instituted 'The Sunday of the Word of God' to be held every year on the third Sunday of Ordinary Time, with the

Apostolic Letter in the form of a Motu proprio "Aperuit illis" issued on 30 September 2019.

The Pope intended it to be a day dedicated to the celebration, reflection and dissemination of the Word.

A note released on Saturday by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, and signed by the prefect, Cardinal Robert Sarah, explains that The Sunday of the Word of God is a means to help people “reawaken an awareness of the importance of Sacred Scripture for our lives as believers, beginning with its resonance in the liturgy which places us in living and permanent dialogue with God.” …The note itself is divided into ten points, the first of which points out that “through the proclaimed biblical readings in the liturgy, God speaks to his people and Christ himself proclaims his Gospel.” It indicates that “One of the ritual possibilities suitable for this Sunday could be the entrance procession with the Book of the Gospels or simply placing the Book of the Gospels on the altar.” [The note] also suggests that St. Jerome be proposed as an example "for the great love he had for the Word of God."
