Southern Sweden Southern Sweden Day 1: ARRIVE STOCKHOLM Arrival Stockholm Arlanda Airport and pick up rental car. Drive to your hotel in the city centre. We can recommend a canal cruise or a visit to the Vasa Museum. The impressive warship Vasa sank on her maiden voyage in 1628 but was salvaged 333 years later in 1961. She has since been restored and can now be seen with her complete rigging at the Vasa Museum. Remember also to visit the famous old town, Gamla Stan, or one of the many museums. Accommodation at 3 star+ class hotel in Stockholm, centrally located Day 2: STOCKHOLM – JÖNKÖPING (325 km) Breakfast at the hotel. Leave Stockholm through the pleasant countryside of Southern Sweden towards the city of Jönköping, beautifully situated at the southern end of Lake Vättern. If time permits we recommend a cruise on the lake. Accommodation at 3 star+ class hotel in Jönköping, centrally located Day 3: JÖNKÖPING – GOTHENBURG (146 km) Breakfast at the hotel and continue to Gothenburg, the second largest city of Sweden. Gothenburg offers a variety of attractions: the greatest amusement park in Scandinavia, Liseberg, a boat cruise to the 17th century New Älvsborg Fortress, the floating maritime experience centre Maritiman with an armada of 19 museum vessels and an opportunity to see and learn about U-boats, destroyers, mine-layers and fireboats, Universeum, where you can experience the Ocean, the Rain Forest and Space all in one day as well as museums, cafes, shopping etc. Accommodation at 3 star+ class hotel in Gothenburg, centrally located Day 4: GOTHENBORG – MALMÖ (270 km) Breakfast at the hotel. Before leaving Gothenburg, we recommend a visit to the Gunnebo House, one of Sweden’s most beautiful neoclassical estates beautifully situated between two lakes, Rådasjön and Stensjön, in the Municipality of Mölndal, just south of Gothenburg. Continue south along the West Swedish coast line. If time permits, make a detour to ancient university city of Lund, about 1000 years old and one of the oldest cities in Sweden. The University was founded in 1658 and has become a leading university in Sweden and Scandinavia. Also possibility to cross the bridge to Copenhagen, capital of Denmark, located just on the other side of the narrow Øresund Belt. Arrival in Malmö, a charming city where we recommend a visit to Malmöhus Castle which has been housing museum collections since 1926. In 1434 king Erik VII of Denmark had the castle of Myntergaarden built where the Malmöhus Castle stands today. Also remember time to enjoy the atmosphere of this historic city. Accommodation at 3 star+ class hotel in Malmö, centrally located Day 5: MALMÖ – KALMAR (285 km) Breakfast at the hotel. Continue by road to Kristianstad, a former fortress town founded by the Danish King Christian 4 in 1614. Drive along the coast to Karlshamn, known for its well preserved historical buildings. Karlshamn played an important role in the Swedish emigration to America as a large number of people left Sweden from here. By the harbour you can see a copy of Axel Olssons statue which depicts the key charaters of Vilhelm Moberg´s famous novels, Karl- Oskar and Kristina, looking out over the sea before starting their adventure. Just west of Växjö you will reach the “Kingdom of Crystal” where you can visit one or two of the famous glass factories. Experience the art of glassblowing and search for bargains in the glass shops! Continue to Kalmar, famous for its castle which was for long the guardian of Sweden´s southern frontier. Accommodation at 3 star+ class hotel in Kalmar, centrally located Day 6: KALMAR – STOCKHOLM (409 km) Breakfast at the hotel. Kalmar was once one of the most important towns in the North and we recommend spending some time here before continuing back to Stockholm. The historical past is an integral part of the character of the city. Kalmar Castle, the Old Town and Kvarnholmen tell the tale of mighty kings and queens as well as commoners. Traces of the past are found in architecture, cultural artifacts and art as well as in the well-worn cobblestones that pave the streets. Return to Stockholm along the Eastern coast line via Västervik, Norrköping and Södertalje. Accommodation at 3 star+ class hotel in Stockholm, centrally located Day 7: STOCKHOLM DEPARTURE Breakfast at the hotel. Drive to Stockholm Airport Arlanda airport to drop off rental car. • Towards the Kalmar Union
S P E C I A L I Z E D A G E N C I E S TOWARDS THE KALMAR UNION Dear Delegates, Welcome to the 31st Annual North American Model United Nations 2016 at the University of Toronto! On behalf of all of the staff at NAMUN, we welcome you to the Specialized Agency branch of the conference. I, and the rest of the committee staff are thrilled to have you be a delegate in Scandinavia during the High Middle Ages, taking on this challenging yet fascinating topic on the futures of the three Scandinavian Kingdoms in a time of despair, poverty, dependence and competitiveness. This will truly be a new committee experience, as you must really delve into the history of these Kingdoms and figure out how to cooperate with each other without sending everyone into their demise. To begin, in the Towards the Kalmar Union Specialized Agency, delegates will represent influential characters from Denmark, Norway and Sweden, which include prominent knights, monarchs, nobles, and important religious figures who dominate the political, military and economic scenes of their respective Kingdoms. The impending issues that will be discussed at the meeting in Kalmar, Sweden include the future of the Danish and Norwegian crowns after the death of the sole heir to the thrones, Olaf II. Here, two distant relatives to Valdemar IV have a claim to the throne and delegates will need to decide who will succeed to the throne. The second order of business is to discuss the growing German presence in Sweden, especially in major economic cities.

Excerpt from a letter by Peter Minuit to Swedish Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna As navigation makes kingdoms and countries thrive and in the WestIndies [North America] many places gradually come to be occupied by the English, Dutch, and French, I think the Swedish Crown ought not to stand back and refrain from having her name spread widely, also in foreign countries; and to that end I the undersigned, wish to offer my services to the Swedish The Kalmar Nyckel Foundation Crown to set out modestly on what might, by God’s Written & Compiled By grace, become something great within a short Samuel Heed, Esq. time [emphasis added]. With Captain Lauren Morgens & Alistair Gillanders, Esq. Firstly, I have suggested to Mr. Pieter Spiering [Spiring, Swedish Ambassador to the Hague] to make a journey to the Virginias, New Netherland and other places, in which regions certain places are well known to me, with a very good climate, which could be named Nova Sweediae [New Sweden]…. • Public Procurement of Buses Kalmar County
Public procurement of buses in Kalmar County, Sweden Public procurement of buses Kalmar County This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Page 1 of 4 research and innovation programme. Public procurement of buses in Kalmar County, Sweden Background and description of the good practice Kalmar County consists of a lot of farm land and a lot of livestock. Also the municipality of Kalmar and the isle of Öland are very popular holiday resorts. The city of Kalmar was e.g. voted to the best Swedish summer city for the third time. But at the same time the Baltic Sea suffers from over- fertilization. Especially the surplus of phosphorous is a problem. For example, on the isle of Öland, located near the cost, there are 2,5 cows per inhabitant. If the farmers wish to by more animals they have to buy more land which is a serious obstacle for them. Kalmar County represents 2,4 % of all the inhabitants in Sweden but stands for 25 % of chicken production and 12 % of milk production in the country making the farming a very important industry. Our politicians have recognized that biogas/bio-methane can be one of the solutions because it not only reduces the metane leaks from the farms but it also delivers a renewable fuel to our vehicles and digestate that can be certified as an ecological fertilizer. The public procurement is generally made for 8 + 2 years. Since the latest procurement was made in 2007, it was time for a new procurement. It covers all the 12 municipalities in the County and is administrated by the Regional Public Transport Administration whereas the final decisions are made by the politicians in the County Council, head of the transport administration.

Why and how is that? An analysis of this region’s historical, social, and economic ties – from the industrial revolution to the present – reveals that the formation of a set of common philosophical and foundational principles led to Scandinavia’s present position. These principles center on the belief that the individual, regardless of gender or social- class, must be free to determine his or her own destiny; furthermore, it is society’s obligation to remove all barriers that may keep someone from fulfilling one’s human potential.

  • The Baltic Region Development from a Historical, Economic, and Environmental Perspective, and Future Possibilities
KALMAR ECO-TECH'03 Bioremediation and Leachate Treatment KALMAR, SWEDEN, November 25-27, 2003 THE BALTIC REGION DEVELOPMENT FROM A HISTORICAL, ECONOMIC, AND ENVIRONMENTAL PERSPECTIVE, AND FUTURE POSSIBILITIES Dr. AndersFro jmark Un iversityof Kalmar, Sweden Ladies and Gentlemen, When I grew up, the Easterncoast of the Baltic Sea was still a great mystery. I also know that on the other coast of the Baltic, when people occasionally had a possibility to go down to the beach, they could say something like "On the other side is Sweden". They might just as well have said, "On the other side is the moon". In 1988, as a Ph.D. student, I was invited to a seminar in Poznan, Poland. That was my first visit to what was then still called "Eastern Europe" (a name reflecting a political division of Europe, and not the location of the country, which is rather in Central Europe).Anyhow, when I got onboard the ferryin the port ofYstad and the big iron door closed behind me I really had the feeling of going to another world. Were there telephones there? Would it be possible to call back home? Will my money-non-declared US Dollars included-be sufficient? If not, I will be completely lost, because I do not thinkthey accept credit cards! And what if I lose my passport? Will I ever be able to get back home again? As a precious treasure, I kept a small piece of paper with the telephone numberto the Swedish embassy of Warsaw. What I met was something very different from what I had thought it would be.
