    POTS AND PANDEMONIUM: THE EARLIEST EAST GREEK POTTERY FROM NORTH PONTIC NATIVE SETTLEMENTS Gocha R. TSETSKHLADZE (Melbourne, Australia) Since the publication of B.V. Farmakovskii’s studies in 1914 (The Archaic Period in Russia) and 1916 (Milesian Vases from Russia), followed by the article of T. N. Knipovich (On the Trade Links of the Greeks with the River Tanais Region in the 7th‐5th Centuries BC) in 19341, the earliest East Greek pottery from native settlements of the steppes of the northern Black Sea has received considerable attention. A catalogue was produced by N.A. Onaiko in 1966, identifying and dating these finds and other pieces discovered in the previous thirty years according to what was then known2. Over the last forty years a few more pieces have come to light but, more importantly, considerable advances have been made both in the dating of East Greek pottery and the identification of centres of production (see Table 1). During the last decade or so this pottery from the northern Black Sea has received attention on a scale hitherto unknown3. This welcome development demonstrates not only the progress made in the study of such pottery but also the problems that it continues to present: academics have retained the use of different chronologies, whilst some publications give insufficient information about new pieces, or what they do give is confusing or contradictory or both. The principal difficulty is methodological: how should we interpret this pottery? It is important to know how the pottery came here ‐ was it as a result of trading relationships with nearby Greek colonies, or was it something else? There are broader implications.

Its strategic location is the reason behind the early Romanisation of Sa- guntum, Valentia and Ilici. They were neither large cities nor had costly monuments compared to Hispania as a whole; however, their interest lies in the fact that they display a model of integration into Roman lifestyles that preserves some traits from the local past, as can be gleaned from their reputation (see Sagunt) or their epithets (Valentia Edetanorum). Keywords: Roman cities, romanisation, Valencia 2nd century BC/3rd century AD Introduction joined the new system at an early date and efficiently adapted the exploitation of its resources. Lying between the south of the conventus Tarraconensis and the north of the conventus Carthaginensis, the cities in the region of Valencia had gradually been gestating Romanised cities in the Republican period since proto-history via different processes. DOMÍNGUEZ MONEDERO Universidad Autónoma de Madrid Resumen El presente artículo intenta argumentar acerca de la dualidad de nombres que conocemos para Sagunto (Arse- Saguntum); a partir de los testimonios existentes (literarios, arqueológicos, numismáticos) se defiende que el área situada en el Grau Vell, y que tenía carácter empórico, pudo haber sido ya denominada por los griegos Saigantha, siendo Arse el nombre de la comunidad política, tal y como atestigua la moneda. Analizando otros emporia conoci- dos se intenta mostrar cómo estos emporios pueden haber desarrollado una personalidad propia que puede haber influido en el desarrollo de la comunidad política de la que dependen. El problema de la intervención romana y del inicio de la Segunda Guerra Púnica se reintepreta a partir de estas perspectivas. Palabras clave: Sagunto, Arse, emporion, Roma, Cartago. Summary This paper attempts to argue about the duality of names we know for Saguntum (Arse-Saguntum); from existing evi- dence (literary, archaeological, numismatic) it is argued that the area in the Grau Vell, which had an emporic charac- ter, could have been called by the Greeks Saigantha, Arse being the name of the political community, as evidenced by the coins. Analyzing other known emporia, we try to show how these emporic places may have developed their own personality and how they may have influenced the development of the political community to which they belong. The problem of Roman intervention and the start of the Second Punic War is reintepreted from these perspectives.
