Loma Prieta Earthquake The Biggest Earthquake in San Francisco Since 1906! • The Loma Prieta earthquake occurred on October 17, 1989.It hit a 7.1 on the Richter scale. It was the worst earthquake in the area since 1906! Battle of the Bay What the Earthquake is probably most remembered for is that it delayed the 1989 World Series.The series happened to be between the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland Athletics from just across the bay. The third game was scheduled to be played in Candlestick Park, but about an hour before the game was supposed to start the earthquake struck.
